_____________

THIS IS INFORMATION I AM WORKING ON , COMPILING A RECORD OF PAUPER'S GRAVES . SOME WHERE JUST MISFORTUNATE PEOPLE THAT FELL ON HARD TIMES DUE TO SICKNESS , OLD AGE , BEING POOR , AND FOR OTHER REASONS NOT KNOWN . THE COUNTY POOR FARM HAD A SMALL CEMETERY FOR THE PAUPER'S WHERE THE COUNTY PAID FOR THE COST OF BURIAL . I AM NOT CERTAIN THAT IS WHERE THESE PAUPER'S WHERE BURIED , BUT I KNEW THERE NEEDED TO BE A RECORD OF BURIAL FOR THE POOR AND HOMELESS . THE RECORD BELOW IS WHAT THE OLD NEWSPAPERS LISTED BURIED AT THE EXPENSE OF THE COUNTY . I WILL BE ADDING MORE AS I RUN ACROSS THEM IN MY RESEARCH .

MAY THEY REST IN PEACE .....

MEMORIES OF THE POOR FARM CEMETERY

Cole remembers a cemetery on the northeast corner of the property. "It was called a pauper's grave. It's been plowed over now. That's a shame, I think all cemeteries ought to be kept scared. Just because they were poor folks doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated with respect," Cole said.

"We used that cemetery to bury a baby one time," Cole said. "Someone had found this baby -- on Eight Mile Creek, I think -- in a laundry bag. It was dead. They brought it to us. We had to bury it in an orange crate."

The county poor farm was eliminated with the establishing of Greene Acres Nursing Home in 1957.
