IN THE EARLY DAYS WHEN BLIND TIGERS WERE THICK AND WELL GROWN IN PARAGOULD AND FEW PEOPLE ENGAGED IN FIGHTING THEM, L.C. THOMPSON , THEN A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE , GAVE A COMPLAINING PARTY 50 CENTS TO BUY A PINT OF WHISKEY FROM A NOTORIOUS SELLER , TO USE AS EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM. THIS WAS DONE AND THE SELLER , ARREST AND HIS TRIAL SET FOR NEXT DAY . ESQ. THOMPSON LOCKED THE "EVIDENCE " IN HIS SAFE AT HIS STORE ON PRUET STREET FOR SAFE KEEPING . DURING THE NIGHT THE DEFENDANT HIRED A FELLOW WHO KNEW THE COMBINATION TO THE SAFE TO STEAL THE WHISKEY OUT AND PUT IN ITS PLACE A BOTTLE LIKE THE ONE CONTAINING THE WHISKEY FILLED WITH COMMON SODA POP.

NEXT DAY THE DEFENDANT , DRESSED IN HIS BEST , LOOKING INJURED AND DEFIANT APPEARED WITH HIS LAWYER AND DEMANDED A JURY TRIAL . THE JURY WAS ORDERED AND THE TRIAL PROCEEDED. THE WITNESS SWORE WHISKEY WAS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR AND DELIVERED TO ESQ. THOMPSON , THE SQUIRE WENT TO HIS SAFE , IN VIEW OF THE JURY AND OPENED IT AND GOT OUT THE BOTTLE AND PASSED IT TO THE JURY , FOR THEM TO EXAMINE AND TO JUDGE OF ITS CONTENTS.

ONE BY ONE THEY SMELLED AND TASTED OF THE LIQUOR IN THE BOTTLE AND A LOOK OF ASTONISHMENT BROADENED INTO A BROAD SMILE AND THEN OPEN LAUGHTER . AS THE JURORS BECOME CONVINCED THE DEFENDANT HAD NOT SOLD WHISKEY. THE LAWYER FOR DEFENDANT TOOK THE BOTTLE FROM THE JURY SMELLED AND TASTED IT AND SAID , JUST AS I SAID IT WAS : THIS DEFENDANT WOULD NOT VIOLATE THE LAW. ESQ. THOMPSON BEGAN TO SUSPECT THAT HIS WITNESS HAD BEEN TAMPERED WITH. HE TOOK THE BOTTLE FROM DEFENDANT'S LAWYER , SMELLED IT , TASTED IT , SAW HE HAD BEEN IN SOME WAY DUPED , THEN LET LOOSE A SLEUCE OF EXPLETIVES THAT JARRED THE RAFTERS OF HIS COURT ROOM AND DISMISSED THE CASE.
