FOR HALF A CENTURY EACH WAS IN THE FULL BELIEF THAT THE OTHER HAD DIED

KNOBEL , ARK. - A ROMANCE THAT WAS BROKEN OFF MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY AGO WAS REOPENED HERE WHEN LEVY COOK , SEVENTY - THREE YEARS OLD , WAS MARRIED TO MRS. DIANA REEVES , SIXTY-EIGHT , ON THE FIFTY FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR FIRST MARRIAGE.

FOR 50 YEARS EACH HAD SUPPOSED THE OTHER WAS DEAD AND EACH HAD REMARRIED . AFTER THEY WERE FIRST MARRIED IN 1863 COOK, THEN TWENTY-TWO YEARS OLD, LEFT HIS WIFE HERE AND WENT TO THE GOLD FIELDS OF CALIFORNIA TO SEEK A FORTUNE . HE REMAINED LONGER THAN HE HAD EXPECTED , FOR THE SEARCH OF TREASURE WAS NOT AN EASY TASK , AND WHEN HE FINALLY RETURNED TO ARKANSAS , WITH A COMFORTABLE FORTUNE, HE WAS TOLD THAT HIS WIFE HAD DIED. HE RETURNED TO THE WEST AND MARRIED AGAIN.

MRS. COOK , AFTER YEARS OF WAITING FOR HER HUSBAND , MADE INQUIRIES ABOUT HIM AND WAS TOLD THAT HE HAD LOST HIS LIFE IN THE HAZARDOUS PURSUIT OF GOLD IN THE WEST. SHE REMARRIED AND NEITHER HEARD OF THE OTHER UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO, WHEN COOK'S WIFE DIED AND HE RETURNED TO ARKANSAS.

WHEN COOK REACHED KNOBEL HE FOUND THAT HIS WIFE NOT DEAD , AND THAT HER SECOND HUSBAND HAD LEFT HER A WIDOW. THE ROMANCE WAS TAKEN UP WHERE IT WAS SUSPENDED 51 YEARS AGO.
