HOLD UP A FRISCO TRAIN NEAR JONESBORO FRIDAY NIGHT

___________

CONCERNING THE HOLD UP OF A ' FRISCO TRAIN NEAR JONESBORO LAST FRIDAY NIGHT , THE JONESBORO ENTERPRISE OF SATURDAYS :

FIVE MEN HELD UP THE FAST FRISCO PASSENGER TRAIN ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM THIS CITY LAST NIGHT . THE HOLD UP WAS , EVIDENTLY THE WORK OF EXPERTS , AND WAS A NICE JOB.

JUST THIS SIDE OF THE BONNERVILLE HILL THE ENGINEER WAS GIVEN A DANGER SIGNAL , HE SLACKENED SPEED AND THE SWITCH WHICH HAD BEEN TURNED RUN HIM INTO THE SIDING. NO SOONER HAD THE TRAIN STOPPED THAN A MAN ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ENGINE ORDERED THE ENGINEER AND FIREMAN TO CUT THE MAIL, EXPRESS AND BAGGAGE CARS LOOSE FROM THE PASSENGER COACHES , IN THE MEANTIME THREE OTHER MEN ENTERED THE EXPRESS CAR AND COVERED MESSENGER HORACE NEWTON WITH REVOLVERS. HE WAS ORDERED TO GIVE UP THE MONEY AND REPLIED THAT HE HAD NO MONEY. HE HOWEVER GAVE THEM THE KEY TO A SMALL LOCAL SAFE AND THEY WENT THROUGH THAT , FINDING NO CASH . THEY THEN ORDERED HIM TO OPEN A LARGER SAFE , BUT AS IT WORKS WITH A COMBINATION TIME LOCK HE COULD NOT OPEN IT UNTIL THEY REACHED THAYER. THE LARGER MAN OF THE GANG TOLD NEWTON THAT HE KNEW THERE WAS MONEY IN THAT CAR, AND HAD BEEN EVERY NIGHT FOR TWO MONTHS , AND NO DOUBT WOULD HAVE KILLED THE MESSENGER , BUT FOR THE FACT THAT HIS PAL , A SMALLER MAN AND SUGGESTED THAT THE NITROGLYCERINE BE USED . A BOTTLE WAS PRODUCE AND THE SAFE WAS BLOWN INTO PIECES, WITH THREE CHARGES , AND A HOLE WAS TORN IN THE SIDE OF THE CAR, BUT NO MONEY WAS FOUND IN THE SAFE . SO IT IS SAID BY THE EXPRESS PEOPLE.

THE ROBBERS THEN WENT THROUGH SOME COATS AND VESTS WHICH WERE HANGING IN THE CAR AND FOUND $10.00 IN THE CONDUCTOR'S VEST POCKET . THE PASSENGERS WERE LEFT UNMOLESTED, THOUGH THE TWO MEN WOUTSIDE ORDERED THEM TO KEEP INSIDE OF THE CARS.

AFTER THE WORK OF BLOWING OPEN THE SAFE WAS COMPLETED THE ROBBERS GOT ON THE ENGINE , BADE FAREWELL TO ENGINEER , FIREMAN AND MESSENGER AND CONTINUED WITH THE ENGINE TO BONNERVILLE.

A POSSE OF MEN AND OFFICERS WENT FROM THIS CITY LAST NIGHT TO THE SCENE OF THE HOLD UP. SHERIFF BURKE , W.H. STAMPER , MARSHAL AUTRY , FRISCO AGENT J.W. KENNARD , CHAS KENNARD AND SEVERAL OTHERS , AND A POSSE OF OFFICERS AND OTHERS ARE NOW OUT SEARCHING FOR THE BANDITS . A RAILROAD DETECTIVE WILL REACH THIS CITY TONIGHT AND IT IS BELIEVED THESE ROBBERS WILL BE CAUGHT . AN EFFORT WAS MADE LAST NIGHT TO GET BLOOD HOUNDS FROM MEMPHIS , BUT THEY COULD NOT BE PROCURED.
