KENNETT--Two Arkansas men drowned and a third was missing
after a car plunged through a St. Francis River bridge railing near
the Missouri-Arkansas state line late Thursday,Jan. 20.
The victims were identified by state police as Vercllio (Sonny)
Hagood , 28-year-old proprietor of a Paragould,Ark., recreation parlor,
and James Coleman Payne, 27 of Halliday,a small community near
Paragould.
Authorities said Hagood's younger brother. Thomas, 24. failed to
return home Wednesday night. They are investigating the possibility
he could have been in the car.
Officers said the car hit the side of the bridge and tore out 70 feet
of steel railing before plunging into the river about 10 feet below.
The older Hagood's body was recovered
about 200 feet down stream while Payne's body was found near
the car.
