TWO ARKANSAS HANGINGS

Pine Bluff, Ark., Feb. 25. 1897

The Herald Dispatch

Transcribed by : Tina Easley

Two colored men were hanged on the scalfold

here today, though not at the same moment.

At 1:16 the trap was   sprung  first

and Robert Cox was swung into eternity

for the crime  of criminal assault.  He

went to his death coolly and made no

statement. His neck was broken and at

the end of eight seconds was pronounced

dead.

At 11:55 Jim Davis was executed for

the murder of Lawrence Williams a boy.

His neck was broken and he  died in

eight minutes. He refused spiritual

assistants and made a brief, speech on the

gallows, in which he said he was ruled by

the devil.
