CLINE FAMILY CEMETERY
At : Punkin Center
HWY .188
The Cline Family Cemetery is located
near Punkin Center, in Tonto Basin, Gila County, Arizona. The tombstone
inscriptions herein were recorded by Donald and Margaret Furtkamp (November
1997), who were escorted by Dale and Loraine Cline and accompanied by Mrs.
Frances Conway (chairman of the Tonto Basin Cemetery committee). The Clines
provided much family information and history of the families and the area.
Additional information was found in the book History of Tonto, compiled by the
Punkin Center Homemakers, edited by Al LeCount, 1976 fourth printing 1995. Mrs.
Helen Brunson Delk contributed to the Tonto Basin Cemetery listings, which
included several families listed in this cemetery, as well.
The Cline Family Cemetery is located east of the Tonto Creek, across the creek
from Highway 188. Punkin Center was built on Florence Packard's old homestead.
Florence owned and operated a store called "Packards," until he
renamed it "Punkin Center" for the pumpkin-growing contests he held
there. Both Florence (spelled "Horance" on the tombstone) and his wife
Sarah Frances Lincoln Harer Packard are buried in this cemetery.
Also buried in this Tonto Basin area, although not in this cemetery, are Amon
Amynander Packard and his wife Anna, who were first buried on the east side of
Tonto Creek until flooding caused their relocation to higher ground on a mesa
above the old Brunson homestead.
This is a small cemetery, located on private land. If you wish to visit the
cemetery for family or historical research, please inquire locally for
permission and location.
The Cline Family Cemetery listing is accompanied by a map of the gravesites,
courtesy of Dale and Loraine Cline. The map indicates location numbers, which
correspond with the individual numbers within the list
Three additional burials were found in various histories, but are not verified
by the family. The last listing in this section includes names that were
identified by Faith Duncan of the US Forest Service. Sources for that research
are unknown, and those burials have not been verified. If you are researching
the families in these last two groups, further documentation will be essential.
