STAR VALLEY
On the Houston Ranch:
the following burials
are located on the old Houston Ranch now owned by Raymond and Pat Cline.
There are two known burials on this land, and neither are marked. The
Genealogy Society in Payson has a photograph of the STARR grave, taken in the
early 1980's.Both areas are marked by tree stumps, on opposite ends os the
ranch.
Captain or Colonel
STARR lived on the property. which later became the Houston Ranch. He was
buried near a cherry tree-now a stump. (This is the same cherry tree Jesse
and Frank James carved their names in, when passing through this area.)
Stones once marked the place of the burial, but no marker is presently at
the grave site. It is said that Star Valley was named for Mrs. Starr ( but is
spelled with one "r" now).
Also buried on the
same ranch in Star Valley is Dick WILLIAMS, killed when his team of horses
bolted and forked a juniper tree as he was returning home at night to Star
Valley.
The Strawberry Cemetery is
located on Walnut Street, northeast of the Historical Strawberry Schoolhouse
that was built in 1885. In 1998 there remain two tombstones and three
weathered wooden crosses marking small graves encircled with rocks.
William D. PRATHER: Died
Oct 14,1897
John WESLEY b: Dec
1,1888-d:Oct 1,1889 "son of James Henry and Sarh WINGFIELD
Previous records
state that the site of Prather's grave was paved with flate rocks two to
three inches below the ground surface. Subsequent investigation indicated
that the other similar rocks were also found under ground, irregularly spaced
throughout the area. it is belived that the original cemetery, before it was
restored and fenced, was a larger than what is now allotted by the county.
There may have been as meany as twenty buried there. It has also been
reported by "old timers " that some members of the LOWTHIAN
family, who also lived in Strawberry, were buried in Pine. {We have found
tombstones for John A. LOWTHAIN and his daugther Lizzie T. LOWTHAIN buried in
Pine.} Sallie A.LOWTHIAN, who died between 1883 and 1900 (before her husband
John ),may be buried in the Strwberry Cemetery, but we have not yet found
evidence to support that theory.{source: Dorothy Ferguson }
