TONTO BASIN CEMETERY

Following are portions of a letter from Mrs. Helen Brunson Delk of Porterville, California, referencing the Brunson family and the origin of the Tonto Basin Cemetery:
My great grandfather James Brunson had his homestead where the Tonto Cemetery is now. Most of the people buried there are related to us....
My grandfather James Nathan Brunson and Grandma Susan Emily (Byas) had a homestead in Tonto Basin just across Tonto Creek from Punkin Center, where the giant pecan trees are. My Grandpa planted the trees. He later divided the 160 acres with his three sons, keeping 40 [acres where his house stood. My brother said Daddy's [William Hester Brunson's] 40 acres was just to the north of the pecan trees, where the road runs through now....
Mrs. Frances Conway, the Director of the Tonto Basin Cemetery, added that when the land was deeded for a cemetery, the previous owner wanted it to be put in the name of an organization rather than an individual. It was subsequently listed in the name of the Punkin Center Homemakers, to be used for a cemetery for the Tonto Basin residents. Many pioneer names are to be found in this cemetery.
The cemetery is referred to as not only the "Tonto Basin" cemetery, but also as the "Jakes Corner" or "Brunson" cemetery. It is located on Highway 188 between Jakes Comer and Punkin Center, nestled in the hills at a little jog in the highway.
There are reported to be numerous unmarked graves in the cemetery-a situation which Mrs. Conway and her cemetery committee are attempting to rectify at the present time (1998). As you read through this list of burials, if you notice a burial that is not listed, you may wish to contact Mrs. Frances Conway, Tonto Basin.
Please take note of portions of two letters regarding the tombstone of Edna Brunson Taylor, and her death date. Obviously further study is required if you are researching that line of the Brunson family. These two letters are on page 131 of this section, regarding both Edna Nellie ["Caarity"] Brunson Toby TAYLOR and her son "Little Dorcey" TAYLOR.

TONTO BASIN CEMETERY
page 131
The following letter was submitted to the newsletter of the Northern Gila County Genealogical Society of Payson, Arizona, Gita Heritage, Volume 5, No.4, November 1987, page 5. The letter was written by Mr. Lee T. Stockman of California, regarding information on the cemetery markers of Edna and Dorsey Allen TAYLOR, buried in the Tonto Basin Cemetery. This information is provided so that you can further research vital records to determine the names and dates provided by the tombstone transcriptions and the information below.
On the headstone of her grave in the Tonto Basin Cemetery she is listed as:

EDNA NELLIE BRUNSON TAYLOR
5 April 1879
6 June 1902

Edna Brunson Taylor's correct middle name is Charity, not Nellie as has been reported. Evidence for this conclusion is contained in the 1880 census of Edwards County, Texas, where she is listed as Edna C., and on her marriage license to Nathan Toby on 30 May 1886 in Kerr County, Texas. Descendants in Texas report her name as Edna Charity Brunson. Edna is remembered by cousins and aunts as dying from complications upon the birth of her son "Little" Dorsey. She had three children born after 8 June 1901 and therefore it is rather unlikely that she died 6 June 1902. A photograph of her youngest son, Dorsey sitting in a chair beside his grandfather, James Nathan Brunson who is holding Emily Brunson, Dorsey's cousin, has survived. Emily was born 20 Feb.1915 and in the photo appears to be about 1 yr. old, and Dorsey would appear in the photo to be about 5 or 6 yrs. old. From this evidence it would seem that Edna Charity Brunson Toby Taylor died in ca 1910.A head stone on the grave of the son Dorsey Taylor has been reported as reading 5 Jun 1902 -17 Mar 1907. Based upon the information presented it is also incorrect. Records from Texas
indicate this son's name was William Dorsey and the head stone shows Dorsey Allen. It is
not known which name is correct. Incidentally on the marriage license of his parents the
father's name is spelled Dorcey, not Dorsey. Anyone with information on this family please contact:

The following was taken from a letter which was received from Mrs. Helen Brunson Delk in March, 1998, who writes the following about Edna: My dad liked to tell us stories about his childhood in Tonto Basin. He told us about his older sister Edna dying after "LITTLE DORCEY" was born. Mom told me that Grandma family Susan Byas] Brunson cared for Dorcey until he died at about age five. When we were kids she would say, "Don't eat that green fruit, or you'll die like Little Dorcey!" [This refers to Dorcey TAYLOR, buried in Tonto Cemetery.] Daddy said his mother claimed to have seen her daughter Edna the night Little Dorcey died. She said, "Edna came to get Little Dorcey!"
[the letter goes on to mention Edna's daughter, Lily Emily Toby, who married Garfield BLAKE]
