What the City of
Placerville Found
in 1975...
In the summer of 1975, the City of Placerville was making improvements to Tunnel
Street which borders the County's old hospital property. The city's
engineering department contacted the County relative to their having encountered
Grave No. 351* from the Hospital Cemetery. This, we would note, was right
off the old alignment of Tunnel Street which likely was being widened.
This occurred during the
time that Mrs. Betty C. Laarveld was performing the County's Cemetery Survey for
the Public Works Department. Mrs. Laarveld fielded the call from the city
and send a memo to G. Arthur Cort, then director of
the department.
Apparently the City felt
the grave was in the way of the improvements, while the County Surveyor, Fred
DeBerry, felt it was not.
The city appears to
have wanted to relocate the grave as it was seeking advice on the proper legal
procedures to deal with the grave. It is not known if the grave was moved
or left in place. Although EDCPCC has attempted to locate the stake
mentioned in Mrs. Laarveld's memo, we have been unable to site it.
* Grave stake No. 351 is recorded as
being that of August Johnson or August Johnson Bendan, who died in late April
1928.
