Offers Free Lookups in Cemetery Directory
Savannah Memorial Park (aka El Monte Cemetery)
Rosemead, Los Angeles County, California

The El Monte Cemetery Association owns Savannah Memorial Park, a 150+
year-old pioneer cemetery in Rosemead, Los Angeles County, California.
Since July 24, articles in several Southern California newspapers have
carried stories on the threatened closing of this quaint, historic cemetery
due to financial difficulties.  A spokesman for the El Monte Cemetery
Association said that they had funds to operate the cemetery for about 2
more years; and then it may be necessary to close the cemetery, disinter and
relocate those buried there, and sell the land to developers.

The SCGS is working to address this threat to a cherished link to our past.
We are serving as an information resource for family members of those
interred in the cemetery, and we are coordinating efforts with the
California Savings Graves group and other organizations. Other activities
will be announced in the near future.

The SCGS Library owns a copy of an interment directory for this touchstone
to Southern California's pioneer past.  The directory, produced in 2002 by
the Cemetery Updating Service in Winona, Minnesota, lists information on
roughly 3000-4000 individuals who are buried in the Savannah cemetery.

As a public service, SCGS volunteers will do lookups from this Savannah
Memorial Park directory for individuals with family members interred in the
cemetery.  The Board of Directors has authorized the Research Team to waive
its usual research fee and perform lookups at no charge.

Please follow these guidelines when submitting requests:

1.  Submit one surname per request.  Lookups will be conducted on a
first-come, first-served basis.

2.  Include as much information as possible on this family's members that
may be buried at Savannah Memorial Park.  Specifically helpful are
birth/death dates, maiden names of females, and any alternate spellings that
may be relevant.

3.  It would be very helpful if you would indicate your relationship to the
individuals you have listed.

4.  Include your name, address, telephone number and email address, in case
we need to call for clarification or for further information.

5.  Emailed or postal mail requests will be accepted.  Please, no phone
calls.  For postal mail requests please enclose a self-addressed, stamped
envelope. Send requests to:

6.  If you would like to receive updates from SCGS concerning the Savannah
Memorial Park, or if you would like to contribute your time or other
resources to this important cause, please let us know.  We will add you to a
contact list for future correspondence.

7.  The offer of free research services pertains only to lookups in the
Savannah Memorial Park cemetery directory.  Any other research services will
be conducted at the usual rates.

8.  The information published in the interment directory includes name, sex,
marital status, date of birth, date of death, age at death, plot (block /
lot / grave number) and comment (inscription, unmarked grave, etc.)  Not all
information is present for all individuals.

The "California Saving Cemeteries" group has created an extensive,
informative web page at

The website includes historical articles concerning the ownership of the cemetery,
reprints of the current news articles and letters to the editors of Southern
California newspapers, and obituaries of some of the cemetery's residents.

Thank you for your support.
