Charles L. Zeh is senior member of the firm of Zeh Brothers, whose fine ranch of four hundred and eighty acres located near Antelope in Sacramento county, is one of the best improved and most productive general farming estates in this vicinity. Also worthy of note is the excellent little vineyard of about two acres, which was planted along in the sixties by the father of the brothers and at the time was one of the first vineyards set out on the high land of that section of the state. Several varieties of finest grapes are still grown in this old vineyard.
Mr. Charles L. Zeh was born on the ranch where he now lives, on June 30, 1859. His father was Gottfried Zeh, who was born, reared and married Johanna Rollin in Germany. In 1857 he brought his family to America and after a brief sojourn in New York city made the long voyage to California, arriving in Sacramento county and settling on the above mentioned ranch in 1858, so that the property has thus been in the possession of the Zeh family for nearly half a century. Gottfried Zeh lived on the home place till his death, January 10, 1879, while the wife and mother survived until December 24, 1901. Of the children born to this worthy couple, six survive: fredericka, the widow of the late Valentine Wachtel of Sacramento county; Louisa, wife of Charles Keelmer, of Roseville, this state; Christ M., in Placer county; Johanna, in Sacramento county; Charles L. and Gottfried M., who comprise the firm of Zeh Brothers and operate the home ranch. The father was numbered among the industrious and capable pioneer residents of Sacramento county, and was known as a very public-spirited citizen. He was a Republican in politics, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Charles L. Zeh was reared and has lived all his life on the place where he was born, his education being supplied by the neighborhood schools. Industrious, enterprising and persistent, he has gained a merited success in the management of his business affairs, and his public spirit has enabled him to fill a useful place in local civic and community matters. He is a Republican, and a member of the Methodist church at Roseville.
His brother Gottfried M. was born on the home ranch, June 1, 1870, and as a practical farmer adds much strength and enterprise to the firm of Zeh Brothers. He is likewise a Republican.
