Richards was a '59er, coming from Wayne Co., IL to Central City with his brother, David M. Richards. He ran a fast freight from Central City to Denver in the late 1860s-70s. He pre-empted 160 acres on Sloan's Lake and built a mansion that still stands today. He was one of the first wheat and fruit farmers in Wheatridge. He was co-owner of the Brown Bros. Flour Mill. He had one of the first Fire Hose Companies in Denver. He financed many mining operations and helped finance and build the Mosquito Pass Wagon Road between Leadville and Fairplay. .........................................................
