OBITUARY
James Franklin Keairns was born in Scioto County, Ohio, January 21, 1873,
and died in Lamar, Colo., February 22, 1936, aged 63 years, one month and one
day.
In 1894 he came with his parents to Colorado and located near Towner. Here
he taught school and for a short time conducted a store at Astor, Kan. When
the Hon. J. C. Funderburg was elected to the Ninth General Assembly from this
district he appointed Frank Keairns from Kiowa county and N. N. McLean from
Baca count as clerks in the legislature. In 1896 Keairns was proffered the
nomination for county school superintendent of schools on the Republican
ticket in Kiowa county. but as he had already made arrangements to move to
Granada he declined the nomination.
He came to Granada in 1896 and engaged in the confectionery and grocery
business. He also taught school for several terms in the various distinct
near Granada. Being a forcible talker and having a pleasing manner on the
platform, he delighted in participating in debates in the debating societies
which were organized in almost all the school districts at the time.
Shortly after coming to Granada he organized the Farmers cantaloupe growers
association and conducted it successfully as manager for several years. After
he severed his connection with it, the association disintegrated and
dissolved.
He was appointed postmaster of Granada by President Theodore Roosevelt and
was reappointed under President Taft. He held this position until the change
of administration and Wilson was elected president. After retiring from the
post office he served as a ranch clerk at the Manvel farm for a short time.
He then went to work for the Page Trading Co., in charge of their meat
department and when they sold to the Snodgrass Food Co., he was sent to their
Lamar store of that company in 1920.
He made his home in Lamar until 1926 when he moved to Colorado Springs,
returning to Lamar in the fall of 1935.
In his youth, Mr. Keairns joined the United Brethren church. He married
April 14, 1903, to Miss. Gertrude Morris of Granada, who survives him. During
his residence in Granada, he served the people well and faithfully as a
member of the town board of trustees and was reelected several times.
In his early manhood Mr. Keairns suffered a paralytic stroke and had high
blood pressure the rest of his life. From that time forward a shadow hung
over his life, grim fear stalked at his side. Not the fear of death but the
fear of the uncertainty of life. The courageous man must be timid; the young
strong swimmer must stay close to the shore. The man who excelled and
delighted in feats of strength must not exert himself. The man whose blood
ran more swiftly and whose pulse beat faster when participating in contests
of sport or the chances of business, must avoid excitement. Notwithstanding
of a devoted wife. Mr. Keairns suffered five severe paralytic strokes the
last five years ago, incapacitating him to work at his trade or perform
manual labor. Mr. Keairns often expressed hope that when his final summons
should come that his death be a sudden and not a lingering one. This wish was
realized last Saturday when the death angel called and he passed at once from
his earthy labors.
This little sketch is written by one who was his chum: who knew him well
for many years; who was familiar with his desires and aspirations; his ideas
and ideals; his hopes and fears; his failures and successes--and looking back
upon his life which is now completed, we find much to praise and commend and
but little to censure.
Mr. Keairns were initiated an Entered Apprentice in Granada Masonic Lodge
No. 72, April 13, 1907, passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft May 11, 1907,
and raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason June 8, 1907.
He held various officers in the lodge and was elected and installed
Worshipful Master Dec. 9, 1911. He demitted June 10, 1922 and joined the
Lamar Lodge No. 90 and was a member of that lodge at the time of his death.
In the Royal Arch Chapter, orient Chapter, No. 32, Lamar, Colo. He was
promoted a Mark Master, Oct. 6, 1920; elected and presided a Past Master,
Oct. 6, Royal Arch degree, Dec. 15, 1920. He was made Royal Master and Select
Master in Oriental Council, No. 15, Lamar, Colo., March 28, 1922
Note: J. F. Keairns was the s/o James S. & Drusilla Crabtree Keairns.

PIONEER WOMAN DIED THURSDAY
Granada. Colo., Aug. 22, Mrs. Druzilla Keairns died at her home in Granada,
Colorado on Thursday, Aug. 21, 1924, age 76 years.
Mrs. Keairns was born in Jacksonville, Ohio, August 21, 1848. She grew to
womanhood in Jacksonville and was married to James S. Keairns Oct. 31, 1869.
Seven children were born to this union of which four are living. They are
Frank Keairns of Lamar, Walter S. Keairns of Kendall, Kansas, Mrs. Carrie
Hutchins of Lamar and Claire Keairns of Granada. Mr. and Mrs. Keairns with
their family moved from Ohio to Glencoe, Minnesota in 1889. In 1892 they
moved to Colorado, locating near Towner where they resided for two years,
coming to Granada in 1894. Mr. Keairns died January 5, 1909.
Mrs. Keairns during her long residence in the west lived the life common to a
pioneer woman, enduring many of the hardships and privations which were the
lot to all. Assisting in caring for the sick, administering to the comfort
and welfare of the unfortunate, doing many acts of kindness daily as a mother
of course without thought of a reward. To these women the west owes a debt of
gratitude, which is not always recognized or appreciated. In Granada Mrs.
Keairns had many friends, especially among the other residents, who will be
sorry to hear of her death.
Besides the immediate relatives mentioned above, Mrs. Keairns is survived by
two brothers. J. M. Crabtree of Troy, Kansas, Dock Crabtree of Waldick,
Minnesota, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2:30 o'clock Sunday
afternoon and interment made in the Granada cemetery. H. B. Hoggatt, funeral
director is in charge of arrangements.
Drusilla Crabtree Keairns was born Jackson County, Ohio and was the daughter of James Lewis & Drusilla Throckmorton Crabtree.

Another Pioneer Passes Away
Word was received from Granada last Thursday of the death of Mrs. James
Keairns, one of the old time and most highly respected citizens of the
Granada Territory. Mrs. Keairns came to Granada in the early days of the
town's history with her husband and family. She has resided there
continuously since. Mr. Keairns died in 1909. This couple will always be
remembered by many old residents of that section now scattered throughout the
west for their many kindly and neighborly acts. During the trials of days
when living in this county was mostly a serious affair, they were ever known
for their readiness to help any who were in trouble or afflicted. Both are
gone now but their good deeds will be kindly remembered by many for years to
come. Several children are left to mourn a mother's loss, two of whom, Mr. J.
Franklin Keairns and Mrs. L. J. Hutchins, are residents of Lamar.
