HOLLY THEATER PROJECT
The monumental task of remodeling Holly Movie Theater is well under way. Just last week, the final interior demolition was completed and rebuilding has started. Volunteer crews have been busy painting walls and ceilings. With over forty volunteers coming together in this effort, planners hope to finish this project by December 15th.
Bob Arambel, a self described 'grunt man' in this project, tells about the shopping spree in Colorado Springs that resulted in the purchase of a screen, acoustic panels, a projector, chairs, and numerous sundries from AMC Theaters.
“The sound system is fabulous-state of the art.” Says Arambel, enthusiastic about the quality of all the equipment that will fill this renovated theater. “We spent $6,200 on $65,000 worth of equipment. I kept feeling like the cops were going to show up and catch us stealing at that price.” Says Arambel, whose 'accomplices' were Donny Godden, volunteer coordinator, and Mike Hartshorn. These three arrived in the Springs on a Friday and began deconstructing the AMC Theater's equipment and chairs. A crew of many more volunteers helped load the purchases on Saturday into a truck provided by Gateway Products.
Many businesses have supported this extensive project. Wal-Mart has been a big supporter as well as A-1 Rental, who has donated the use of sanders and paint sprayers. Gateway Products has donated the use of a truck and they are currently storing the equipment until it's move to the theater. Colorado East Bank and Trust, Big H, and the Town of Holly are also on this growing list of supporters.
Kami Cathcart has been the head of the financial aspects of the Holly Theater project. Just recently, the project received the Boetcher Grant in the amount of $10,000 with the help of Grant McCormick and the Town of Holly.
“We can still use monetary donations,” explains Cathcart. They have yet to do the electrical and flooring. “Those are big ticket items.”
“We still need a lot of volunteers to complete the project,” says Cathcart, hoping many will pitch in between now and the 15th.
Though she expects to open the theater in December, the committee is planning a special Grand Opening in January when finishing touches have been completed. Watch next month for a complete list of Thank You's on behalf of the project coordinators.

MILLENNIUM TREE ARRIVED

Colorado's Gift to the Nation arrived in Granada on November 27, 2000 at 10:15 am, with a bustle of activity. The crowds that gathered were buzzing with excitement. The school buses unloaded the eager faces of the students who were full of anticipation. Not only were they going to see the Millennium Christmas Tree, but Santa Claus was coming and he arrived to the cheers of all the children, on a horse drawn wagon driven by Fred Dorenkamp.
All who participated in this once in a life time celebration were excited with the days schedule of events.
Mayor Pro Tem, Bill Tefertiller began with the welcome address and then Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell and the Colorado Forest Service presented the Town with a Blue Spruce seedling tree. The list of speakers included: County Commissioner Clede Widener, Senator Campbell, Clyde Kennedy, the Millennium Planning Team and the Granada Pride Chairmen.
Clyde Kennedy spoke on the history of Granada and how it related to the Christmas ornament being sent with the tree.
The Pride Chairmen also presented the Town with a framed watercolor print to hang in the City Complex in remembrance of this day.
All the students then began singing Christmas carols to close out this momentous occasion.
Everyone present was given a smaller blue spruce seedling tree of their very own, compliments of the Forestry Service. Also, they dropped off trees at the Granada School to be handed out at the end of the school day.
Refreshments were then served inside the Complex by the Goodale and Granada Womens Civic Clubs. Santa greeted each individual and listened to their Christmas wishes as they went through the line. With all being good boys and girls, they each received a candy cane.

Jennifer Jara read a poem to close out the presentation and Boy Scout Troop #247 did the posting and retiring of the colors.

ATTENTION:
WATER LINE WORK IN GRANADA
Granada residents will be experiencing temporary water interruptions through the coming weeks. If the water is to be shut off a notice will be in the Lamar Daily News and on the local radio stations. They will try to work their schedule to where it would occur after 2:00 in the afternoon.
The water will also contain rust during these periods, so please watch your wash water in your washing machines and check your water filters often.
The water line work for December will affect Highway 50, Main Street, North and South Snowden and part of South Cline Street. The work on Cline Street will be in the 100 block. This work will also affect the traffic flow, watch for detours.

Special orders are welcome.
“I'll be open afternoons and Saturdays,” says Tami. “If I'm not open and someone needs something they can call me.” She can be reached at 537-9005.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE FOR DECEMBER
A great big “Thank You” goes to Dale and Frances Simmons for the many things they do for the Town of Hartman and all of their other volunteer work.
Dale and Frances have four children that were reared in the Hartman community.
Dale became a council member in April 1972. In March of 1999 he was pushed and shoved into becoming the Mayor Pro Tem and reluctantly became the Mayor of Hartman in April 2000. He is also the president of the Hartman Community organization and is on the board of the Holly Fire and Ambulance. Dale belonged to the Lions Club when it was active in Hartman.
He keeps the water system in Hartman working, whether it is supervising repairs, putting in meters, or whatever else needs done. Along with other volunteers, he keeps the old school grounds mowed and cleaned up. He also tries to keep the fire trucks maintained and ready to go when needed.
Dale and his son, Dennis, and Wendell Jones decorate the Christmas tree every year. Les Palmer puts the lights on the water tower.
Frances keeps everything mowed, planted, and cleaned up for most of the two blocks close to their home. She has been the Water Superintendent since February of 1989. Frances bakes and cleans for every event in Hartman, besides holding down a full time job. She has gone with Jennie Marston to all the grant workshops and she, along with Marilyn Wilson, has been very instrumental in getting our gym restored. She is Co-president of the Hartman Alumni.
Both Dale and Frances are very active in all sporting events in Holly and Granada.
This is a small part of everything they do, but we want them to know how much they are appreciated!
(This special tribute was submitted by Marilyn Wilson and Jennie Marston).

Congratulations to the following local Colorado East Bank and Trust employees who received an award for Excelling Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. Minnie Duarte (Granada Branch), Warren Folsom (Holly Branch) and Vickie Bond and June Wolfe (Lamar Branch). Steve Sherlock of Colorado East Bank and Trust presented each with a commemorative pin.

GRANADA WEB PAGES
A new discovery was made this last month by the CSN Staff.
Granada has their own web pages on the internet. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/co/county/prowers/hist/granada
Webmaster, Kathy Leigh lives in Granada with her husband Ray and she has been involved with online genealogy and history for more then two years. She is the county coordinator for Prowers and Bent counties for COGENWeb and the American Local History Network (ALHN). Under the Prowers County website, Kathy has added pages for Granada. These pages contain pictures and stories of Granada's past businesses and citizens.
“I love history and enjoy sitting at my computer sharing my findings with everyone,” Kathy states. She also wanted readers to know that she will put family histories on these pages. You just need to get her the information and pictures and she will put them on the site.
COGenWeb, Colorado's part of the USGenWeb Project, and the American Local History Network consists of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical and historical research in every county and every state of the United States. Both organizations are non-profit and fully committed to free access for everyone.
Kathy is also asking for volunteers to help with researching the Prowers County Courthouse census records. If you have time to give her a hand let her know. Since both the projects are strictly volunteer, they're always looking for anyone willing to contribute their time and/or information.
Kathy can help you with genealogy searches for your family tree or at least point you in the right direction. Give her a call at 719-734-5421 or e-mail her at rkleigh@bwn.net and she will be able to answer any question you may have about these websites.
