REVIVED COWBOY BALL
BENEFITS HOSPICE

The Bent-Prowers Cattle and Horse Growers Association is reviving the Cowboy Ball. Once famous for all-night dancing and early morning breakfasts. The Cowboy Ball for Hospice is to benefit both the Arkansas Valley Hospice and the Lamar Area Hospice.
“We think the services hospice provides are especially important to agriculture producers and rural people. Many ranchers are so far from a hospital and Hospice provides a way for people to stay at home, be with loved ones and still get the care they need,” said Bill Gray, president of Bent-Prowers.
The Cowboy Ball for Hospice is being held from 6:00 p.m. to midnight on January 20, 2001, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Junta. The evening begins with a Rocky Mountain oyster fry followed by prime rib dinner and western dancing. “It should be fun plus we will be supporting a really good cause”, said Gray. Tickets for the event are $45 per couple or $25 for an individual.
“It's our hope that the Cowboy Ball for Hospice can become an annual event much like its predecessor. We would like to see it alternate locations each year so that the entire Arkansas Valley can support Hospice,” said Greg Grenard, who is part of the organizing committee.
Tickets for the Cowboy Ball for Hospice are available at both Hospice offices, Colorado East Bank and Trust, or through Bent-Prowers Vice President, Kerry Hartshorn.

LAMAR AREA HOSPICE
VALENTINE DANCE

The 7th Annual Lamar Area Hospice Valentines Dance will be held on Saturday, February 10th in the Empire Room of the Cow Palace Inn. The committee is making final preparations to insure an enjoyable evening.
Lorraine Pearson explains, “This event began seven years ago with a cocktail party and silent auction. Valerie Baldwin was instrumental in putting the fundraiser together and her efforts raised $3,500 for Lamar Area Hospice.” Since then they have included a sit down dinner, a live and silent auction with a dance following.
“Each year we have been able to increase the amount of money we give to Hospice, with an average donation total of $13,000”, Lorraine states. She also stresses, “One hundred percent of the money we raise goes to Lamar Area Hospice for our area!”
Lamar Area Hospice is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of the terminally ill in our community. They provide those services without regard to a persons ability to pay. Because of this, they must continually find sources of revenue and rely solely on donations.
“My committee works hard each year to make this event a special evening for those who attend,” says Chairperson Lorraine Pearson. “We strive to have something for everyone in our auction, with items ranging from Thomas Kincaide artwork to Avalanche and Rockies Tickets, and everything in between.”
John Campbell from Winter Livestock Company in LaJunta will once again be our auctioneer and anyone who has had the privilege to see him knows, he is worth the price of admission! Following the Live Auction, the band Alibi with play until midnight.
Reservations and preferred seating are available and walk-ins are welcome. The price is $30 per person, with discounts given for multiple ticket purchases and includes the Filet dinner, live auction, entertainment and dance. Invitations will be mailed January 20th, but an invitation is not required to attend. Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to come out and support your Local Hospice.

CHILD IMMUNIZATION UPDATE

The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, Prevnar, is now available at the Prowers County Public Health Nursing Office. The vaccine is being provided under the Colorado Vaccines for Children (VFC) program and is offered to infants and toddlers, following the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
Prevnar, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for children, can prevent pneumococcal disease, which is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States. Meningitis is an infection of the covering of the brain. Each year pneumococcal disease causes many health problems in children under 5, including over 700 cases of meningitis, 17,000 blood infections and about 5 million ear infections. It is spread from person to person through close contact. Children under 2 years of age are at the highest risk of serious disease. The infections it causes can be hard to treat, because the disease has become resistant to some of the drugs that have been used to treat it. This makes prevention of the disease even more important.

Who should get the vaccine?
  1. All children under two years of age should get 4 doses of the vaccine, starting at 2 months of age. If the vaccine is started at a later age, the number of doses decreases. Starting the vaccine at an early age provides protection when a child is at the highest risk of having the disease.
  2. Children between 2 and 5 years of age in high risk groups who have health problems including sickle cell disease, a damaged spleen or no spleen, HIV/AIDS infection, diseases that affect the immune system such as diabetes and cancer, or are Alaskan Native or American Indian. It is also recommended for children under age 5 who attend group childcare.

For both age groups, the number of doses needed depends on the age that the vaccination begins. The vaccine is given at the same time as other childhood vaccines. Side effects are rare, with the most common one being redness, tenderness, or swelling where the shot was given. About 1 out of 10 has mild fever. For more information on this vaccine, or to schedule an appointment for your child to receive Prevnar, call the Prowers county Public Health Nursing Office at 336-8721 or check with your local health care provider.
