APPRECIATION FOR GRANT

“Grant is greatly appreciated and loved by his community and we wish him well,” said Cheryl Roup, of Holly's Town Manager. This sentiment was echoed throughout the community as over 400 people from Holly and the surrounding area attended the Grant McCormick Appreciation Night held March 30th.
The evening's festivities began with a delicious smothered steak dinner. Then a cakewalk and 3-point hoop shoot took place. The evening progressed with a talent show that showcased a variety of local talent. Then ended with an auction and bake sale of donated items. Through the generous donations to the Grant McCormick Family Trust Fund the evening raised around $6500.
“Both he and Norma have committed so much of their personal time to this community,” said Dorothy Frey. She says the Fund will be open until Easter and anyone who still wants to make a donation may do so through Colorado East Bank and Trust at Holly.
The organizers wish to thank all the people, who pitched in, making the Appreciation Night for Grant a true community effort.

GRAND OPENING BRISTOL FIRE HOUSE

The Bristol Fire Department would like to welcome the community to the Grand Opening of the Bristol Fire House. This Fire Department Logocelebration, located at 110 South Fredrick in Bristol Colorado, will take place on Saturday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m. A Sloppy Joe Dinner, at the cost of a donation, will be prepared and served by the Goodale Club from 6:00-7:30 p.m. All the churches in Bristol are donating pies to be served with this meal.
The local Busy Bees 4-H club will provide carnival style activities for the children. They will also run a pop stand, with the profits being donated back to the Bristol Fire Department.
Mike Untiedt, a former Bristol citizen and successful artist will provide an acrylic landscape painting of the area. Mike is last month's featured artist in Southwest Art Magazine. A drawing for this painting will take place at the end of the evening.
Bring your own lawn chair and relax to the sound of live music performed by a band from Burlington.
Please make plans to attend this festive evening.

ANTIQUE TRACTOR FARM FOR FUN DAY

An Antique Tractor Farm for Fun Field Day is scheduled for Saturday April 14th. Entries will be accepted in 5 classes of antique tractors (1965 and older) up to 100 horsepower. Modified tractors are welcome for exhibition. These tractors will be pulling actual farm implements in the field.
Organized by Frank DuVall of DuVall Farms, this old iron contest will take place on his farm. This location is between Lamar and Granada on highway 50, then 9 miles south on Road 19.
“I started driving antique tractors when I started farming. I just didn't call them antiques back then,” jokes DuVall, who started farming in 1954. “I was in my late twenties before I realized they even painted tractors.”
DuVall hopes this event will till up a lot of interest, perhaps becoming an annual event. “I thought this would be a good chance for antique collectors to get together and have fun for the day,” says DuVall, noting that not many collectors get the chance to try their tractors in actual field conditions.
Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. with farming to follow. There will be no admission cost or entry fees.
The Granada Pride Committee will offer full concessions.
For more information, contact Frank DuVall at 734-5229 or Kerry Hartshorn at 734-5326. A storm date has been set for April 21.

The Amache Trap Shoot did very well for the small group of shooters that attended. They had a few local participants, but would liked to see more from the area involved.
A thank you to those who did attend and participate.
It would have been nice to see more of the local shooters help raise funds for their community. Hope to see you at the next one!

TAR WARS FOR 5TH GRADERS

The Tar Wars program is presented to the Holly and Granada 5th graders by Tammie Clark, RN and Delaine Dunning, LPN. This is a lively, interactive education program that increases student's awareness of attitudes about tobacco use and the effects on the body. Through group activities, students examine the different messages in tobacco advertising. The lesson is fun, while focusing on the short and long term of using tobacco.
Tar Wars is a Pro-Health, tobacco-free education program and poster contest for fifth graders. The ultimate goal of the program is to discourage tobacco use among the nation's youth. The goals of the program are:
  1. To educate and motivate youth in choosing a healthy way of life.
  2. To encourage community involvement and support for the Tar Wars project.
Each 5th grade student in Holly and Granada designed posters that emphasized the positive effects of not using tobacco. The first place poster from each school was sent to the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians in Aurora, CO. The winning posters will be displayed at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The state winner will receive a trip for two to the national Tar Wars Poster Contest in Washington D.C.
All of the posters are being displayed at the Prowers County Public Health and Nursing Service office in Lamar.

Congratulations to all the 5th graders.

The St. Patrick's Dinner & Entertainment fundraiser was a success! The banquet room was packed even with the stormy weather that threatened throughout the day and evening. The Granada Pride Committee wants to thank everyone for supporting this event. Without your support, we would not be successful in our efforts to improve the City Complex.
The servers took a crash course in serving just prior to this meal.
Many compliments were expressed to the servers regarding the quality and quantity of the dinner. The delicious meal was cooked by Chef, Marge Creech. The Committee would also like to give our compliments to the Chef and thank her for all the time, effort and assistances in putting this fundraiser together.
