FAREWELL POTLUCK DINNER
FOR THE PERRY FAMILY

Saturday, May 18th, at 6 pm, the Fire Department will host a Farewell Potluck Gathering in honor of Ken and Beth Perry and family at the Granada Community Complex.  Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.  Several items have been donated to raffle and the fire department will be selling raffle tickets prior to the potluck as well as that evening.  Everyone is invited as we take the time to appreciate the Perry family for all they have done as a part of our community.
In 1984, Ken and Beth moved to Granada; Ken went to work at the former American State Bank, now Colorado East Bank and Trust.  Beth continued her teaching career, getting a job with Granada School as an elementary teacher.  Beth taught school until their daughter, Heather, was born in 1989.  Daniel came along two years later.  Beth continued teaching when Heather was in Preschool.
Ken and Beth have been an active part of this community. Ken a member of the Granada Lion's Club and a volunteer on the Fire Department.  Beth was a member of Granada Civic Club and played an active role in all her children were involved in.  Heather and Daniel have been in the Granada Ranch Hands and involved in many sporting events.  They will be moving to Southwest Colorado in June.  We will miss them and wish them the best in their future.

FSA NEWS

July 15th is the final date to report crop acres and turn in production records.
Now that everyone wishing to purchase NAP policy has done so. It is time to get ready to submit crop production records and report your crop acreage intentions. When reporting your crop acreage make sure you know the planting dates of each crop. When submitting crop production records it is to your advantage to have at least 4 years, less than that will cause the FSA office to use a portion of the county yield as a T yield. Production records need to be verifiable for the crop by practice, type and variety, summarized by year. Acceptable records can be commercial receipts, ledger sheets, custom harvest invoices, contemporaneous diaries to verify actions other than commercial sales such as fed to livestock. If there was no production in a year then you're past report of acreage will verify no crop planted in that year.
Report any crop losses to the FSA office within 15 days of the disaster occurring, even if it is an INSURABLE crop such as wheat.
June 1st is the final date to request a reconstitution. This is in the event that you bought or sold any land and need to combine or separate from existing farm.

Local History

Bristol
(Told by Deloris Jones)
Bill and I met at a welding school in the spring of 1943 where I learned to do tin welding.
In the fall of 1945, Bill and his brother Jim came to eastern Colorado to look at farms. Bill took option an 80 acres northeast of Bristol, Colorado.
We had rain, rain, and more rain that fall in southeastern Kansas. After Bill had planted wheat the second time in the mud, he said, “I am going where it is high and dry.” When we have dry years, I remind him of that fall.
We were married in January 1946 and spent our honeymoon in the Colorado mountains. We bought our farm from Walt Decker.
In February, we moved to two rooms over the Russom Grocery Store. It had been sold to Gene Roberts before we came back. The post office was in the grocery store, and Mr. Russom kept it. Later, he moved it next door when the hardware store closed and the owner went back to eastern Kansas. Felix Smith had a drugstore south on the corner from the grocery store.
In February 1947, we moved to our present farm. It was purchased from the sugar company in Holly. We raised wheat, hay, milo, and some cattle. Bill has been engaged in farming all his life. When the work slowed down in the fall, he liked to deer hunt and went for many years. He was an avid reader of western magazines.
Being a small town girl who knew nothing about farming; life has been interesting. Through the years I became active with the 4-H kids, and for twenty years I was a leader. I also was a set mother for many Holly Square Dancers.
After Bill retired, wooden puzzles became his passion He designed many brain teasers, but his Jesus puzzle is his masterpiece.
We have four children: Carl, our son and three daughters: Kay Marples, Susan Lucius, and Gail Bowers. Along with one daughter-in-law and three son-in-laws, we have seven grandsons and two granddaughters living. Our hearts are still with the two granddaughters we lost.
Carl has taken over the family farm and checks on us every day.
We are members of the Bristol Presbyterian Church. Several years ago, I had a junior choir at the church, and Bill was the Sunday School Supervisor.
Bristol is a great place to live. We would not live any place else.

Granada Police Department:
New Cars, New Officer

The Granada Police Department is back to two officers after hiring Officer Ray Duncan in April. Ray and his wife Noreen have two children and four granddaughters. Ray's son-in-law is former Granada Officer Khris Mooney. Officer Melanie Frantz has been employed since September. Her husband Brad, is the former Chief of Police and is currently a Deputy of the Prowers County Sheriff's Office. They live in Holly and have three sons. Both Ray and Melanie are graduates of the Otero Junior College Law Enforcement Training Academy. Maintaining an “open-door” policy, they urge anyone with any concerns, complaints or ideas to let them know.

Box Top$ for Education

Recently the Granada School began a program called “Box Top$ for Education.” This program is to help benefit the art programs at all levels. Box Top$ for Education is a fundraising program, which started nationally in 1996, as more and more schools struggled to make ends meet. With this program Granada School can earn extra money to help with the high cost of art materials.
Students, parents, teachers, and the community are asked to clip Box Tops from participating products. They include: General Mills cereals, all Betty Crocker products and Betty Crocker fruit snacks, Yoplait Yogurt Multi-Packs, Yoplait Go-Gurt, Lloyd's Barbecue products, some General Mills snack products and General Mills food service products.
Each year the Granada School will send the box tops to General Mills. The school will receive a check, equivalent to 10 cents for every Box Top redeemed. Each student will receive a Box Top box to take home. There will also be a Box Top box in the school office and at the Colorado East Bank and Trust.
Other ways to receive funds from this project is to shop on line. Such businesses as JC Penny, Amazon Books, Proflowers, Barnes & Noble, Crayola, Spiegel, Office Depot and Target, just to name a few, will donate a percent of your purchase price to your school.

Start watching, clipping and saving those Box Tops!
