On Monday, June 10, Governor Bill Owens issued a state-wide ban on ALL open fires and the sale and use of fireworks. In accordance with this ban, the City of Granada has banned fireworks and the burning of trash. According to a news report on the Denver News on June 11, anyone caught violating the ban can be charged with felony arson, which could mean prison time.

NRCS-New Farm Bill Highlights

Sign up Deadline: June 28, 2002
   1. Additional funding for Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).
   Changes in EQIP Program include an increase in cost share to 75%, one to 10 year contracts, and a dollar limit per individual of $450,000 for the life of the farm bill (2002-2007). Funds will be used to address priority issues of water quality, soil erosion, grazing lands, wildlife habitat, and animal waste systems.
   WHIP Program will cost share at 75% and contracts will be five to 10 years. WHIP dollars are used for the development, enhancement, and protection of wildlife habitat.
   2. New funds for a Ground and Surface Water Conservation (GSWC) Program in the Ogallala Aquifer underlying parts of eastern Colorado are now available.
   The 2002 farm bill passed with congressional support for the targeting of a proportion of EQIP funds for GSWC in the high plains aquifer area which includes Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Ogallala Aquifer is a part of this.
   Producers must show a net savings in ground or surface water on their agricultural operations in order to receive cost share funds for this program at a rate of 75%.
   3. Conservation Security Program (CSP) provides incentive, cost share bonus payment to producers to maintain existing conservation practices or install new ones. The CSP, which is open to all producers and all agricultural lands compensates producers for the environmental benefits they provide to the American public.
   4. Other new programs available: The Grassland Reserve Program (GRP), The Small Watershed Rehabilitation Program (SWRP), The Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP).

Photo of Independence Day Picnic Mark your calendars for the Annual Potluck and Fireworks display to be held on Wednesday, July 3rd.
   Festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Granada Park with a potluck dinner. Bring a covered dish, eating utensils and your lawn chairs; the ice cream and drinks will be provided by the Civic Ladies. Then, stick around for the fire-works display that is set to begin at dusk.
   Plan to come out for some good food and great entertainment.

FSA NEWS

   Prowers, Baca, Bent, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Las Animas and Pueblo County Conservation Reserve Acres have been approved for grazing. You must complete a request at the FSA office which identifies the acreage to be grazed and then have a conservation plan completed by Natural Resource and Conservation Service.
   Grazing is approved until August 31st or adequate moisture is received. 25% of the acreage is to be un-grazed for wildlife. The grazing payment rate is 25% of your annual rental payment.

Child Identification Kits
To Be Offered

   The Granada Police Department will be sponsoring a booth at Granada/Bristol Day on June 15.
   They will be providing Child Identification Kits and have literature on various topics.
   These kits will help ensure that the child's photograph, fingerprints and other pertinent information is recorded in case the information is later needed in an emergency situation.
   The Granada Police Department urges every parent to stop by and pick one up.

   Myrna's parents were: Grant Curl and Evelyn Marie (Schwisow) Hanks. Grant Hanks was born in Alton, Kansas to Ulysses S. Grant Hanks and Lydia Alice Curl Hanks.
   Evelyn was born in Fairbury, Nebraska. Her family moved to Colorado, when she was a small child. The family lived in what is now know as; Thelma McGee's place. Evelyn walked across a few fields to Buffalo School while in grade school and rode a school bus to Granada High School. Evelyn was the only one in her family to graduate from high school.
   When Grant was 17, because of Ulysses' health, the family moved to Colorado. Ulysses had been a carpenter before moving; upon arriving in Colorado they lived on a farm and not long after they settled in Colorado, he died.
   Grant had worked in a drug store and thought about becoming a pharmacist after he got out of school. However, if he had become one, he never would have met Evelyn.
   Grant and Evelyn were married in Syracuse, Kansas, on December 25, 1925. they settled down in the house Grant lived in before marriage. They were living at this farm when Donna Marie Hanks was born, January 3, 1927, and Dorothy Jean Hanks on April 23, 1930. The family moved to Evelyn's sister, Mattie Tolin's farm after Matties husband, John Tolin had passed away. In 1938, the family lived on a farm south of Ann Sicklebower's and it was owned by Emil, Evelyn's brother, who had moved to Michigan, and Ina Schwisow. The family lived here for a year. The house was later sold to Wesley and Pat Campbell and moved to Holly and remodeled. Myrna Kay Hanks was born on October 25, 1938, in a house south of the old Sacred Heart Hospital in Lamar. The family moved to a farm north of the present home of Michael and Regina Smith, that was owned by Osterman's. The next year, Grant and Evelyn moved to the farm where Myrna grew up. Grant Curl Hanks Jr. was born August 13, 1943.
   Grant and Evelyn were living in Lamar at the time of their deaths. Grant died January 16, 1987, and Evelyn died August 25, 1988.
   Jimmy Leroy McGee and Carol Simpson McGee were married August 10, 1935, in Syracuse, Kansas. Bub's dad, Jimmy Leroy McGee died and his mother Carol now lives in Lamar. They lived on the Verhoeff farm on road JJ. Bub has an older sister, Margaret Ann Murray. She was born November 11, 1936. Bub was born February 14, 1938. The family moved to the Decker farm, where Mrs. Beulah Malone lived for many years and this made Bub and Myrna neighbors. In 1943, the family moved to the farm Bub grew up on now, on road MM. Pat Palmer now owns this farm.
   Bub (James Robert McGee), lived next door to Myrna for a time, before they started school. They must of known each other at a very young age; however, Bub says he did not really notice Myrna until they were in the seventh grade. Bub and Myrna started school together, along with Stanley Vanderpool, Allen McGrath and Abraham Ortiz. This group went all through school together.
   Bub and Myrna dated through high school. Bub was farming and Myrna lived in Lamar. She worked at the telephone office. There were several apartments above the Lamar Theatre and telephone operators lived there. It was simple to go to work; just walk down the stairs and go next door, as the phone company was on Main Street.
   Bub and Myrna were married on January 18, 1958. They lived in Lamar for a few months. They moved into a home in Bristol and it was sold and moved to the dry-land north of Bristol. It is the present home of Don and Betty Kershner.
   Bub and Myrna have three children: Dixie was born November 29, 1958, Kim was born April 21, 1961, and Joe was born July 3, 1962. On May 29, 1962, they moved to the present family home.
   Dixie married Harvey Drake and lives in Garden City, Kansas and they have two children; Kayla Marie and Tyler Robert. Harvey works for the county and Dixie works for a lawyer.
   Kim married Brenda Bellomy and they have two children: Nicole Ann and James Robert. They live in Loma, Colorado. Kim farms and works at a feedlot. Brenda works for the State of Colorado.
   Joe lives in Lamar and works for Ranch Manufacturing.
   Myrna says, “living on a farm is a great place to raise children.” However, Myrna never intended to live on a farm when she grew up. Funny about life sometimes!

Committee Minutes

   On May 5, 2002, at the Granada School, the meeting was called to order.
   A motion to approve the minutes passed and the treasurers report was given. The Committee has $9,153.18 in their account. A motion to accept the treasurers report was made and passed.
   The GOCO Grant and bids were discussed.
   The Horse Pull and Ranch Rodeo fundraiser on Memorial Weekend was opened for discussion. Plans for cleaning , setting up and clean up was finalized.
   The DuVall Farm Day was a great success and a big thank you to the concession lady for working this alone.
   With no further business, next meeting was set for June 3, a motion to adjourn was made.

Horse Pull/Ranch Rodeo a Success

   May 26th was a full day of activity at the End of the Line Arena, at the historical Camp Amache. It was a beautiful day and the Granada Pride committee had the area looking spic and span. Sod and little pine trees have been planted around the concession stand and the Ranch Hands 4-H Club completed the painting on the west end of the arena. There was a good crowd who came to watch the second annual Big Draft Horse Pull. Teams were entered from Oklahoma and the Peyton, Colorado Springs areas. The competition was up against one team weighing 4890 pounds, named Rock and Roll, that was owned by the Marines. A retired Major was the driver, assisted by two active Marines. They helped in the opening ceremony and the national anthem.
   The winners in the heavy weight division were: Jim and Bill, weighing 4500 pounds, driven by Chuck Beaman from Elbert, Colorado, second were Buster and Bub, weighing 4280 pounds, driven by Roger Littell from Oklahoma.
   The winners in the lightweight division were Bob and Dick, weighing 3400 pounds, driven by Chuck Beaman and second were Dick and Tony, weighing 3250 pounds, driven by Doug Gray from Ramah, Colorado.
   Following the Team Pull, six Ranch Rodeo teams coming from Pueblo to Liberal, Kansas, entertained the crowd and competed in five events.
   The Valley Riders from Syracuse were the big winners, with 25 points, and True Grit was a close second, with 20 points.
   The Ranch Hands 4-H Club served up a great Bar-B-Que, with three kinds of meat and home made pies.
   The Granada Pride Committee says thank you to everyone who donated their time and effort. Also, to all who came and watched the performances.

Independence Day, 2002

Lest we not forget when celebrating the 4th of July this year, that we are celebrating our nation's independence. Not only should we honor our founding fathers and our brave revolutionary war soldiers, but all the men and women who fought for this country since our declaration of independence, and those who have given their lives in the name of freedom.

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
