Named for John W. Prowers, a pioneer and cattleman of southern Colorado, Prowers County was created from Bent County on May 3, 1889. "It would straddle the Arkansas River from the Colorado-Kansas state line almost to the western edge of the Big Timbers--an area 39 miles east and west, 42 miles north and south." --From A Prowers County History
