Thornton Buford Stringfellow was born at Fort Clarke on his father's plantation on July 21, 1860. His parents were Dr. William Hall Stringfellow and Sarah Dogan Stringfellow. As a young man he worked in the mercantile business for G. K. Broome. He later entered the grocery business with his brother, Robert Lee Stringfellow. The brothers moved to Jacksonville in 1900 and established the Stringfellow Brothers Wholesale Grocery at the foot of Hogan Street in that city. T. B. moved back to Gainesville in 1907. He was president of the Diamond Ice Company, Sweet Water Mills, and Stringfellow Grocery Company. His principal business interest, however has been in real estate.
