Dr. John G. Elder
Physician
Dr. John Elder, son of Edward A. and Mary Wilson Elder of Jasper County
was born Oct. 4, 1839. A 1858 graduate of Nashville Medical College
in Nashville, Tennessee, he settled in Milledgeville and began in practice
the same year. He enlisted in the Baldwin Blues April 26, 1861 as
a private and was promoted to surgeon serving in both field and medical
service
He was wounded 5/10/1864 Spotsylvania Court House, VA; a
POW 3/25/1865 Fort Stedman, VA and released 6/4/1865 Point Lookout, MD.
After the war was over, he settled in Indian Springs before moved back
home to Monticello in 1872.
Dr. Elder's wife Mary was born in Ohio. They had six children: Eva
E., J. Warden, Mary, Annie, Minona P. and Henry P.
Dr.Elder died before 1900 as his wife is listed in Monticello
on the 1900 census as a widow. In 1910 Mary and children Henry P. and Mary
have moved back to Indian Springs and Henry P. is a manager at a livery
stable.
