AUGUSTA CHRONICLE, DATED 1-19-1863
Friday night last an accident occurred with
the Central Railroad involving the mail and passenger
train. It was caused by the breaking of a wheel of the
baggage car between Stations 16 and 17. The car was
demolished and causing the death of Patrick Dodd, the baggage
master, a man named James Creed and a Negro. Eight of
the ladies were injured also. Mr. Creed was one of the
prisoners captured by the Federals at Fort Palaski, and he was
taking a trip over the road to gain such information as would
fit him for a future employ by the Southern Express
Company. He leaves a wife and four children. His
body and that of Mr. Dodd were badly mutilated as to be
scarcely identified except by their clothing. |
