Carroll, Effie Green, Langley, SC, age 70, died in a Columbia, SC at a hospital after a long illness.  A native of Aiken County, daughter of the late Samuel Green and Millie Whitaker Green. A life long resident of this community.  Retired from the local textile plant and was a Jehovah Witness.  Burial in the old Langley Cemetery.  She is survived by a niece.  Mrs. Paul Fittery, and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Creed, James Anderson, 81, Grantieville, SC., died at his residence yesterday afternoon, 1-3-1943 after an illness of two months.  He was a widower of the late Mrs. Emma Josephine Creed, a native of Edgefield County.  Lived in the Valley for the  the past 40 yrs. He was a member of the Grantieville Baptist Church. One daughter, Mrs. Maggie Atkins of Graniteville; sons, J. W. Creed of Grantieville and B. W. Creed of Columbia SC.

Friday, Thomas Everett, died 1-19-1943, age 63 at his residence in Graniteville, SC after an extended illness.  He was the husband of Emma Bell Friday. Greene, Joseph J., Jackson, SC, age 83,  died 10-13-1966 at the New Ellenton Nursing Home after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Jackson, he was a son of the late William F. and Emmaline Key Greene.  A retired rural mail carrier with 40 yrs. of service. He was also a farmer and a former telegraph operator for the A. C. L. Railroad. A member of the Green Pond Baptist Church , he was a member of the W. O. Greene, Maude Andrews, Jackson, SC, age 59, died 3-9-1956.  Interment in the Jackson Memorial Park Cemetery.  A native of Beech Island, SC., she had lived most of her life in Jackson where she was a rural letter carrier for several years. She was president of the Home Demonstration Club, a member of the Jackson Civic Club, and played an active role in Red Cross work during WWII.  She was the wife of Joseph Johnson Greene.

Durden, Gurtrude Youman - Aiken, SC died in an Aiken Regional hospital, 12-21-1990, age 89.  Native of Emanual County and was a homemaker. Durisoe, Lucy Glover - Edgefield, SC,  died suddenly last night (12-10-1905)at her home on Maint. St. from second stroke of paralysis. She was over 60 years old and had been ill in health for some months. Daughter of Wiley Glover, deceased and was twice married, first husband, Gus Tompkins and the second husband, D. R. Durisoe who at one time owned the Edgefield Advertiser. She left no children but several relatives.

Eargle, Clifton C.-  was a member of The Bath Masonic Lodge. Member of the Langley Methodist Church. A member of the Woodmen of the World. A native of Graniteville, SC. At one time he operated his own store, but at the time of his death Mr. Eargle was an employee of Aiken Stores, Inc. He died at his residence after a brief illness of one week on February 12, 1942. Survivors include his widow, Iola Jowers Eargle; one son, Dr. Edwin E. Eargle of St. Petersburg, Florida; one daughter, Mrs. T. D. Hankinson, Blanche, age 87 of 133 South Boundary, S. Hankinson, J. B., Beech Island, SC., died on Tuesday.  He was severely cut by a negro, whose name could not be learned. Mr. Hankinson was in his barn putting in some peas. He called to the negro to hand him a sack. The negro refused and Mr. Hankinson started at him.  The negro then assaulted him with a knife. 10-6-1898 (TAC)

Hankinson, J. Lee, age 59, a leading figure in the brick and tile industry died of an acute heart attack 7-9-1931.  He was found by the cleaning crew in his office on the fourth floor of the Southern Finance Corporation building.  Battled with heart trouble for several years.  He had just returned from his fathers home who is ill, L. H. Hankinson.  Born in Beech Island, SC and when a young boy went to Atlanta, Ga and was educated in the public schools later graduated from The Citadel, Charleston, SC.  He returned to Augusta, Ga and entered the brick business.  President for many years at the Georgia Carolina Brick Company.  Retired several months ago.  Member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.  Husband of Mrs. Bennie Smythe Hankinson; daughters, Mrs. John Gregg of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Stewart Phinizy, Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Robert Goodwin, Jr, Augusta, Ga.; sisters, Mrs. John Foster, Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Tom Stafford, Augusta, Ga.,  Mrs. William Dobson, Beech Island, SC. Kirkland, George Washington - age 77, died 7-28-1909 at his residence on upper Broad Street.  Funeral services held in  Graniteville, S.C. this afternoon 7-29-1909.  Interment in the Cemetery that place. A native of South Carolina.  He came to Augusta several years ago, and since that time has been an active and respected resident of the city and citizen of the state.  He is survived by five son and six daughters.  A member of the Graniteville Masonic Lodge and will be interred with Masonic honors.

Newberry, Hattie B. Davis -Gloverville, Sc., died November 6, 1956.  Wife of Edward W. Newberry. Died in the Aiken hospital after a brief illness.  Funeral services, Gloverville Baptist Church. Interment in Langley Cemetery.  The body at the home of her niece, Ruby Lane of Gloverville.

Richardson, Colie - of Graniteville, died July 19, 1944, a technician sergeant, U. S. Army, he was 26 years old.  Husband of Evelyn Smith Richardson, Graniteville.  He was killed in action in France. He was sent to England, January, 1944.  Native of Aiken County, son of the late Ed Richardson and the late Eunice Wills Richardson.  Member of the Fourth division and a member of the Eight infantry for eight years.     Town Creek church, funeral services and interment. Richardson, John William, Jr.,  age 76, of 2174 Pine Log Road, died 10-1-1991 at St. Joseph hospital.  Interment in Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  Native of Aiken County, SC.  Owner and operator of Richardson Lake from 1957 to 1963 and Richardson Sand and Gravel 1963 - 1974.  Mother, Pearl Johnson Richardson; sisters, Beatrice Wingard, Graniteville, SC and Nell Riddle of Aiken, SC.

Richardson, Lessie Overstreet, Gloverville, SC, born on 11-28-1912 and died on 1-16-1967 from an extended illness.  Interment in Graniteville Cemetery.  Daughter of Joseph and Mary Overstreet. Richardson, W. S. - Clearwater, SC, died 10-26-1936 at his residence, 81 years old.  He was sick for several years. Funeral at the Union Church, Clearwater, SC. Senn, Cecelis Fontaine, age 22 and wife of Claude G. Senn of Vaucluse, South Carolina died today (3-23-1941) in an Aiken hospital of burns sustained in her home six weeks ago. Her clothing caught fire from flames in front of her fireplace.  Funeral services held at St. John's Methodist Church in Aiken, South Carolina. Interment will follow in the Vaucluse Cemetery in Vaucluse, South Carolina. Her remains will be at the resident of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George E. Senn until the hour of the funeral.  She had lived in Aiken until her move here when she married Claude Senn.  She was an active member of the St. John's Church.  She has a charming personality.  In addition to her husband, she is also  survived by her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Clara Cortez also of Aiken, SC.

Sexton, Walter C. - age 45, veteran of WWI, died 7-21-1943 at the residence of Mrs. Ernest Creed, Belvedere, S.C. after an extended illness. Funeral services held at Curtis Baptist Church.  Interment in the Langley Cemetery. A native of Tennessee, lived in Augusta for some years. Member of the Curtis Church.  Husband of Elsie Creed Sexton: two sons, Corporal Clyde H. Sexton, U.S. marine Corps, Australia, and Ray W. Sexton of Augusta; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Wright of Spartanburg, S.C. and Mrs. Bessie Knighton of Fountain Inn, S.C.; two brothers, Sam H. and John Sexton of Woodruff, S.C. 

Shaw, Lavonia Durden - wife of James C. Shaw died 5-7-1984 at the age of 51.  Interment in Sunset Memory Garden, Langley, SC.  Native of Aiken County.  Member of MidValley Baptist Church. Slayton, Arthur Joseph Sr., of 1735 Carolina Drive, Aiken, SC died Wednesday at his residence.  Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Bethany Cemetery. A native of Graniteville, SC., and a member of the First Baptist Church.  A veteran of WW II and a retired insurance agent.  Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Helen Graham Slayton; daughters, Mrs. Wade M. Brodie, Aiken, Mrs. Lois Freed, Chattanoogo, Tenn., and Mrs. Nelson Irving, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; son, Arthur J. Slayton, Jr., Humacao, Puerto Rice; sisters, Mrs. Ruby S. Slayton, Catherine Crosby, 82, who died last Friday morning at the home in Graniteville of her daughter, Mrs. May Whittle, were held Saturday afternoon from the Graniteville Baptist Church.  Interment was in the Vaucluse Cemetery. Mrs. Slayton leaves four daughters, Mrs. Whittle, Miss Jessie Franklin of Johnston, Mrs. E. B. Creed of Belvedere and Mrs. Lessie Taylor of Graniteville; two sons, J. E. Slayton, Hazel Jerome - died 5-6-1977 in an Aiken Hospital.  Resided in Vaucluse, SC.  Native of Aiken County; member of Vaucluse Methodist Church.  Interment in the Vaucluse Cemetery.  Employee of Graniteville Company, Vaucluse Division.

Slayton, Jack O. - age 75, died 9-15-1994 in an Aiken Hospital.  Funeral services at Eureka Baptist Church where he is also a member.  Interment in the Vaucluse Cemetery.  Native of Aiken County.  Member of Adult Bible Class and Church Choir and was a nursing home Minister.  Napier Funeral Home. Slayton, John Wesley, age 69, Vaucluse, SC, well known citizen, died at his residence.  Interment in Vaucluse Cemetery.  A native of Athens, Ga., but had resided in Vaucluse for the past 60 years.  Member of the Knights of Pythias.  Survivors: wife, Corrie Walton Slayton; daughter, Miss Jesse Belle Slayton, Vaucluse; sons, Jack and Hazel Slayton; step-sister, Ellen Bandy, Bath, SC.  Note: John W. Slayton tombstone reads he was born 2-16-1874 and died 1-13-1944.

Slayton, Marvin Grady, Aiken, SC -  88 died Thursday, August 3, 200, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.  The funeral will be at 4 p.m. today at Central Baptist Church.  Interment  in the church cemetery.  A native of Graniteville, was a Navy veteran of WW II.  He had retired as a life insurance agent from Liberty Life Insurance Co., where he was awarded the Blue Vase Award.  He served as lay speaker for churches in Aiken Baptist Association as a moderator and Sunday school director.  He was a former member of Graniteville First Baptist Church and a member of Central Baptist Church, where he served as deacon emeritus, deacon, Sunday school director and on many church committees.  Survivors include: sons, Edward Wayne Slayton, Tybee Island, Ga., and Marvin Drew Slayton, Aiken;  daughter, Bonnie L. Slayton Pattison, Aiken; sister, Evelyn H. Bush, Atlanta.  George Funeral Home, Park Avenue, is in charge of arrangements.

Smith, Mary Helen, age 14, Aiken SC died 9-17-1943.  Interment in Bethany cemetery.  She is survived by her foster father, Henry Smith, Aiken; sister, Mrs. Alvin Slayton, Graniteville; brothers, Private William Yon, Pine Camp, NY, Private Jessie Yon, Camp Blanding, Fla.; Alton and Milledge Yon, Graniteville.

Turner, David Albert, age 22 died Monday 2-18-1929 in Columbia, was buried at Vaucluse Cemetery after funeral services at the Vaucluse Baptist Church conducted by Rev. T. E. Seago of North Augusta.  He is survived by his parents, Mr. and MRs. John H. Turner; brothers, George, Hudson, Ira and John H. Turner, Jr.; sisters, Mrs. Lila Coursey and Miss Mila Turner all of Vaucluse, SC.

Francis Pickens Turner, age 80, died 4-23-1934, at the residence of his daughter, John F. Williams, in Aiken, South Carolina. Turner, John Henry, December 13, 1946, age 76, of Vaucluse, South Carolina, died at an Augusta infirmary.  He was an emplyee of the Graniteville Company.  Born in Johnston, South Carolina and had lived in Vaucluse for the past 45 years.  Funeral services in Vaucluse Cemetery.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma M. Satcher Turner; sons, George, Hudson, Ira and J. H. Turner, Jr., all of Vaucluse; daughter, Mrs. Allen Holley, West Columbia; brothers, Jake Turner and Thomas Turner both of Augusta; sister, Mrs. Ella Turner, Graniteville.  

Walling, Hattie Ergle,  of 105 Canal St. Graniteville, SC died at her residence, 3-8-1960 after an extended illness. Interment in Graniteville Cemetery. Daughter of the late Daniel and Harriet McCarthey Ergle. Wife of the late James R. Walling. Native of Graniteville and lived there all her life. Member of Graniteville First Baptist Church. Daughters, Mrs. Vernelle boyd and Mrs. F. G. Porter both of Graniteville; sons, Noriis Walling and James Richard Walling of Graniteville and a sister, Belle Owens of Aiken, SC.

Willing, Lula Johnson, age 49, died suddenly this afternoon at her Aiken county home.  Wife of J. Allen Willing, Aiken.  Interment in Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery were she was also a member.  Was employed at Thomas Laundry and Dry Cleaning for 13 years.  Had returned home a week ago from the hospital and was improving health prior to death.  Survivors include her husband and a daughter, Miss Jessie Inez Willing, Aiken; sisters, Mrs. Ray Stoes, Graniteville, SC, Mrs. Pearl Richardson, Warrenville, SC and Mrs. Maggie Gantt, Aiken; brothers, Barney O. Johnson, J. B. Johnson, George Johnson and F. Johnson all of Aiken, SC.

Yonce, John Martin, age 62, Edgefield County retired planter, died at his home, March 25, 1939 following a sudden illness.  Funeral services at Phillipi Baptist Church.  Interment in the churchyard cemetery.  Survivors: wife, Mrs. Hattie Yonce; children: J.B. Yonce, Bessie Yonce, Mrs. Lee and Mrs. LeRoy Walton, all of Johnston, and E. M. Yonce of Orangeburg, S.C.
