Swain County Herald, (Swain Co. NC) Thursday, December 5, 1889:

 "SOUTH CAROLINA---Two Murderers Sentenced: William Carpenter and

Whitfield Murrell were convicted at Edgefield, S.C., Thursday of the

murder of Preston Younce in June last. The jury deliberated three

hours and returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to mercy.

A motion made in arrest of judgement was refused by the judge, and the

prisoners were sentenced to be hanged on the third of next January.

These are the first white murderers convicted in Edgefield County for

forty years."
