Diehl and Verdery  Family Notes of Interest

The Augusta Chronicle, 5-18-1910 - The annual meeting of the Orangeburg Manufacturing Company was held yesterday.  The affairs of the company were carefully and thoroughly investigated and the company was re-organized by electron of the following board of directors - E. F. Verdery, L. C. Hayne, James P. Verdery, E. C. Fleming, C. M. Harrington and W. P. Smith.  The directors then elected Mr. E. F. Verdery president of the Warren Manufacturing Company as president and treasurer; Mr. W. G. Smith, Manager and Mr. W. E. Andrews of Augusta, secretary.  The election of Mr. Verdery as president and treasurer is a source of much satisfaction to the stock holders and insures the successful management of the mill.

The Augusta Chronicle, 10-3-1885 - James P. Verdery, Esg., has applied for letters of dismission from the estate of Thomas J. Wylds.

The Augusta Chronicle, 5-2-1907 - Mrs. J. Hardwick Jackson very delightfully entertained her card club on yesterday morning.  Her guest were Mrs. Eugene Verdery, Mrs. Henry B. King and Miss White of New Hamspshire.

The Augusta Chronicle, Friday, 5-1-1908, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Verdery and Mr. Eugene Verdery, Jr., are now with Mrs. and Mrs. Tallaferro on the hill, where they will remain until their home is completed. Their present residence will be almost entirely torn down and a large colonial house will occupy its site.

The Augusta Chronicle, Sunday, 9-20-1936 - Of widespread interest was the marriage of Miss Mary Elizabeth Daley and Mr. William Mathurin Verdery which was solemnized in Aiken, Sc., on September 11, 1936.  The bride was gowned in a dress of black sheet crepe with which she wore black accessories and a corsage of sweetheart roses.  She is the daughter of Mrs. Estelle Daley and is a graduate of the Tubman High School. The groom is the son of Mrs. T. E. Verdery and is a graduate of the Richmond Academy.  He and his bride will make their home with his family for the present.  Attendants at the wedding included Mr. and Mrs. G. K. Moore, Mr. Frank Burnley and Miss Mary Speering.

The Augusta Chronicle, 8-7-1904 - Mr. Eugene Verdery, Jr. left Thursday for New York where he will spend a week.

The Augusta Chronicle, Sunday, 9-11-1938 - From the neighboring state of Alabama comes the announcement of an engagement which will be read with interest both in Augusta and this section of Georgia.  It concerns the betrothal of Edith Beeland, of Greenville, Ala., and Charles Plummer of Andalusia, Ala.   The bride to be is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Beeland, Mr. Beeland is president of the First National Bank of Greenville.  She is the granddaughter of Col. Prather, the former Susan Verdery, daughter of Mathurin Verdery, of Augusta.  She is also the great-granddaughter of James Beeland of Monroe County, Ga.  Her grandmother was the beautiful Miss Louise Prather, of Atlanta, a pupil of Alfredo Barili.  Miss Beeland  graduated in June from Randolph-Macon College, Lynchburg, Va.  Mr. Plummer, is a member of a distinguished family of Alabama, holds a responsible post in the Bank of Andalusia. 

The Augusta Chronicle, Tuesday, 4-26-1932 - Mrs. Eugene Verdery, Jr., has returned after a visit north.

The Augusta Chronicle, Sunday, 10-19-1913 - Harlem, Georgia News, Cards of invitation have been received in Harlem from Mr. William Winslow Hamilton, to the marriage of his daughter, Katherine Louise and Mr. Holcombe Mathurin Verdery, on Tuesday afternoon, October 28th, at 2:30 o'clock, Baptist Church, Grovetown, Ga.

STATE OF GEORGIA, RICHMOND COUNTY.

 Default having been made in the payment of principal and interest under the terms of a certain security deed given by Beulah L. Blackston, of and state and county, to Clio Verdery, of Columbia county, Georgia, to secure a loan of $300.00 dated September 29, 1929, (I am not sure about the last number in the year, 1929, 1923?) which deed is of record in the office of the clerk of the Superior Court of Richmond county, Georgia, in Deed Book, 11-L's pages 534-535, to which deed reference is made and a renewal thereof dated October 12, 1932, extending said indebtedness to mature September 29, 1934. 

Therefore, pursuant to the powers contained in said deed there will be sold at public outery at the courthouse in Richmond county, Georgia, the usual place for holding sheriff's sale on the first Tuesday in December, 1935, the following described realty:

All that lot or parcel of land with improvements thereon, lying and being in the city of Augusta, county of Richmond state of Georgia, formerly known as the Village of Harrisonville, on the west side of Fifteenth street, formerly known as Carnes road, on which it fronts sixty-two (62) feet, more or less, and extending back of unequal width a distance of four-hundred, five and 7-10 (406.7) feet, more or less, and being seventy-eight and 6-10 (78-6) feet, more or less on the rear.  The improvements on the lot being designated by the city number 1625 Fifteenth street.

The Augusta Chronicle, Monday, 1-22-1926 -The death of Miss Adele Pavegeau Verdery, which occurred at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night at the home on the Wrightsboro road , is the occasion of profound sorrow to a large circle of her relatives and friends.  She was in her 87th year, being one of the oldest and best known and beloved citizens of the community, who had rounded out the fullness of her years in a ripe  maturity of character and service.  She passed peacefully away after three years of illness as one who falls into an eternal sleep after a lifetime of usefulness.  Miss Adele Verdery was born at Genoa, the county home of her family, on the Milldegeville road.  She was the oldest of five children, the others being Elizabeth Leith Verdery, Eugene Francis Verdery, James Paul Verdery and Georgia Clio Verdery.  The family had been prominent in the history of the community for many years, and with her passes the last member of the immediate family.  She was an earnest and devoted Christian, a member of the First Baptist church, taking active interest in all good works.  As a worker in the Sunday school, a firm believer in and supporter of the cause of missions, local and foreign, she did valuable helpfulness to the young and the distressed in the community.  Her example of old time refinement and religious devotion will be an inspiration for years to come. The funeral will be at her home on the Wrightsboro road this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock

The Augusta Chronicle, 10-10-1929- Mr. and Mrs. Marion C. Verdery announce the birth of a daughter, Dorothy, at Univeristy Hospital, Augusta, Ga., Sunday, October 6, 1929.   Mrs. Verdery is recalled as Miss Dorothy Ponds. 

The Augusta Chronicle, Tuesday, 7-4-1978 - Elmer Diehl, 1103 Seymore Drive, North Augusta, died Sunday at his residence.  The funeral will be held at Posey's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles D. Page officiating.  Time will be announced.  Burial will be in the Pineview Memorial Gardens with full military honors.  Mr. Diehl was a native of Scranton, Penn., but had lived in North Augusta for 30 years.  He was a member of the North Augusta Baptist Church, American Legion Post 71 and Disable American Veterans.  Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Newsome Diehl; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Diehl, Scranton; one daughter, Mrs. Clinton Sams, St. Augustine, Fla., three brothers, Edwin Diehl, Donald Diehl, Joseph Diehl, all of Scranton; and three sisters, Mrs . Betty Kochan, College Park, Md., Mrs. Dorothy Sherdon, Mrs. Evelyn Speranzo, all of Scranton.  Friends may call at the Posey's Funeral Home, North Augusta, or at the residence.

The Augusta Chronicle, 11-3-1926 -  Mr. and Mrs. Holcombe Verdery and Miss Clio Verdery and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rivers visited Augusta, Wednesday. 

The Augusta Chronicle, 1-4-1910- Miss Gussie Verdery will return to Evans, Ga., this week to take charge of her school duties at that place.

The Augusta Chronicle, Saturday, 7-11-1964 - Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the graveside in Magnolia Cemetery for Thomas Frederick Harlow, of Thomasville, Georgia, who died Friday in Thomasville after an extended illness.  Dr. Charles N. Gibboney will officiate.  A native of Waynesboro, Ga., Mr. Harlow was the husband of Mrs. Eugenia Perkins Harlow of Thomasville.  He was a graduate of Emory University, was a member of Thomasville First Presbyterian Church and Thomasville Rotary Club.  Survivors other than his widow include, a son, Dr. Thomas F. Harlow, Thomasville, Ga.; a grandson, Thomas F. Harlow, III, Thomasville, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. G. E. Chandler, Keysville, Ga.  Mr. Harlow was a superintendent of Balfour Lumber Company.  Platt's Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

The Augusta Chronicle, 4-19-1963 - Miss Carol Elaine Manter and Mr. Thomas Frederick Harlow, Jr. were married in the chapel of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church at 7p.m., April 15. The Rev. Charles H. Gibboney officiated.  Mrs. John T. Manter and the late Dr. Manter are the bride's parents and Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Harlow, Thomasville, Ga., are the bridegroom's parents.

Known all men by these presents that we Robert A. Diehl, as principal, and W. E. Clark and J. J. Keith as securities, are held and firmly bound into W. W. Rhodes, ordinary of said county for the time being and his successions in office in the sum of five-hundred dollars to the payment of which well and truly to be made. We bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally furnish by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 6th day of November, nineteen-hundred.  The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas the above bond R. A. Diehl was on the 3rd day of October nineteen-hundred duly elected coroner of said county of Jefferson. If the said Robert A. Diehl shall faithfully discharge all the duties of such office of coroner of said county during the time he continues there in or discharges any of the duties there of  the above obligations to be void otherwise to remain in full force.
