Bessie Hadden (Phillips), age 77, of Gough died 3-5-1978 in a Burke County hospital. Interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Avera, Ga., were she was also a member.. A native of Jefferson County, spent most of her life in Burke County. Survivors include: husband, Eddie T. Phillips; daughter, Mrs. W. C. Butler, Sr., Gough; sister, Mrs. Berta Brooks, Stapleton, Ga.
Christine (Hadden) Samples Sikkema, 87, of Louisville entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in the Glendale Nursing Home in Wadley. A native of Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Cy W. Hadden and Rosa Ford Hadden. She retired after many years as a bank teller and travel agent and was a member of Duharts Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, in the Louisville City Cemetery, with Rev. Larry L. Montgomery officiating. Mrs. Sikkema was preceded in death by her parents; and two husbands, Robert M. Samples and Al Sikkema. Survivors include two sons, Bob W. (Cynthia) Samples of Augusta and Billy F. (Loretta) Samples of Louisville; four grandchildren, Donna (Stephen) Lyons of Savannah, Bob (Donna) Samples of Augusta, Robert (Angela) Samples of Wrens, and Cyrus Samples of Forsyth; one sister, Katherine Samples of Wrens; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Harvey E. Hadden, age 76 of Rt. 3, Box 815, died 11-25-1993 at Medical College of Georgia. Interment in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Avera, Ga. A native of Jefferson County, Ga, retired as a carpenter. Was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Sons, Nelson E. Hadden, Adrian, and Billy P. Hadden and Donnie A. Hadden , both of North Augusta, SC; daughter, Shelby H. Kennedy, Hephzibah, Ga; brother, Lewis Hadden, North Augusta, SC; sisters, Mary H. McNeal, Stapleton, Ga, Margaret Kelley, Louisville, Ga and Polly Norris, Dearing, Ga. Note: Harvey Hadden was born on 8-6-1917.
James Edward Hadden, age 62, Avera, Ga., died in Gibson Rest Home, Gibson, Ga, on 3-10-1986. Survivors include: daughter, Sara Jo Allen, Fort Valley; son, Charles Hadden, Sandersville; mother, Dora Bell Rabun Hadden, Avera; sisters, Lois Leland, Pensacola, Fla., Jessie McGahee, Belle Glade, Fla., Betty Irby, Avera, Mary Brooks, Columbia, SC and Barbara Jean Sammons, Hephzibah; brothers, Troy Hadden South Bay, Fla. and Jerry Haddden, Avera.
Joe Marshall Hadden, Avera, Ga, age 81, died 11-24-1973 in an Augusta hospital. Interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Native of Jefferson County. Retired farmer and rural mail carrier for 18 years. A local merchant, he was a veteran of WWI and a member of Woodman of the World. Survivors include: Wife, Doris Bell Rabun Hadden, Avera; daughters, Mrs. Lois Leland, Pensacola, Fla., Mrs. Jesse McGahee, Belleglade, Fla., Mrs. Betty Irby and Mrs. Barbara Sammons, Avera, and Mrs. Mary Brooks, Columbia, SC; sons, James E. Julia Ellen (Hadden) Hughes,
86, of Thomson entered into rest on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Avera, on July 21, 1923, to Ernie and Sally Hadden. She
was the valedictorian of Avera High School in 1939. She was married to D.C.
Hughes on Aug. 2, 1942. Mrs. Hughes later graduated from Georgia State College
for Women with a bachelor of science degree in education, and received her
masters and reading specialist degrees from the University of Georgia. While at
UGA, she was an active member of Kappa Delta Pi, the honor society of education.
Mrs. Hughes was an educator for 37 years, 21 of those as a classroom teacher.
She then served as the reading consultant for five counties before becoming the
director of elementary instruction in the McDuffie County School system in 1971,
where she remained until her retirement. Mrs. Hughes was the recipient of a
Fulbright Scholarship in 1981 to study the school systems of India. She was a
founding member of the local Alpha Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an
international honorary organization of women educators. Mrs. Hughes was a member
of First Baptist Church Thomson, where she taught the Fidelis Sunday School
Class for many years. She was a part of the group that founded the Raysville
mission, which is now Raysville Baptist Church. She also taught reading as part
of the Adult Literacy Program of First Baptist Church. Funeral services were
held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010, in the sanctuary of First Baptist
Church Thomson. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, D.C. Hughes
Jr.; son, Carroll Hughes (Linda); daughter, Kay Williams (Ken); six
grandchildren, Matt Hughes (Jackie), Josh Hughes (Ginger), Katie Hughes Anthony
(Jeremy), John Williams, Michael Williams (Caroline), and David Williams; two
sisters, Corrie Hawkins of Huntsville, Ala., and Betty Hadden of Gibson. If so
desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to
the First Baptist Church. Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Marshall Joseph Hadden,
age 24, Thomson, Ga, died 12-26, 1946, age 24. Interment in Pleasant Grove
Cemetery. A veteran of WWII and served in the Pacific theatre. He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe M. Hadden of Avera, Ga. He died from a short
illness. Note: He was born
8-28-1922.
