Coffee County was created
February 9, 1854 from Clinch, Ware, Telfair, and Irwin Counties.
Coffee
County was named for General John Coffee, son of Peter Coffee, Jr. He
was born December 3, 1782 in
Prince Edward County, Virginia,, and died in 1836 in Telfair County,
Georgia on his plantation. His death occurred on the same day he was
elected to the U.S.A.
Congress, for the third term. General Coffee served during the War of
1812 as General of
Georgia State Troops.
