Gaillard
Gaillard was
named in honor of the engineer who surveyed
the Southern Railroad line at this point because previous
surveyors could not remedy the problem of the track being
too steep a grade at this location. The Gaillard cut in the
Panama Canal is also named in his honor because he also
surveyed that portion of the canal.
