THE EFFINGHAM HUSSARS

The Effingham Hussars were organized at Springfield, Georgia, Abt. 1846, and officially entered Confederate service in April 1861 as Company A, Squadron B, Georgia Cavalry. The company subsequently became Captain Bird’s Mounted Company, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry (Dec 1861), and then Company A, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry. Most of its members were from Effingham County, Georgia, with only a few men from other counties. The company was sometimes called Captain Bird's Company, and then Captain Strobhar's Company. Many of the members of this company were in the unit from 1861 to the end of the war in Apr 1865. The Hussars spent the first two years of the war patrolling the Georgia Coast protecting private property from attacks from the Union Navy and Army. They were the outer defense of Savannah. The 2nd Battalion was in the Department of Georgia under the command of BRIGADIER GENERAL H. W. MERCER. The Department of Georgia was a division of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and East Florida, under MAJOR GENERAL P. G. T. BEAUREGARD. When the Battalion was first organized, it was commanded By LT. COLONEL MONTGOMERY CUMMING. Later CAPTAIN EDWARD BIRD would be promoted to Lt. Colonel and would take command. On 20 Jan 1863, the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Georgia Cavalry were organized into the 5th Georgia Cavalry, under the command of Colonel Robert H. Anderson. The Effingham Hussars became Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry.

Sidenote: My greatgrandfather was Paul Marlow Edwards. My grandfather, Robert Smets Edwards lived in Meldrim, GA. He passed away in 1965, when I was 15 yrs. old. He would sometimes talk about the stories, or facts, his father related to him. He said his Father once told him they were in a fight at NOONDAY CREEK, which I now know was near Brushy Mountain, on the extreme right of the Kennesaw line. He said his father said that they were fighting union troops armed with repeating rifles. His father's best friend was shot in the head, and they laid him on the floor, a few feet inside the front door of the church. When my Grandfather was 12 yrs. old, his father took him on a train trip to northwest georgia to some of the sites where he had fought. There was a bloodstain engrained in the wooden floor of Noonday Church precisely where his father said they had laid his buddy. I have a 1859-0 silver dollar that my grandfather told me was the one they gave his father in North Carolina for the parole. I hope this may in some way add a little information to your archives, Thank You!
