1835-Dec 27th..A Petition-Baker Co Ga. Red Bluff...talked of
an Indian and ask for a volunteer Company
of Militia signed by Robert S. Hooks John G. Hooks and Hillary Hooks, among 20
or so others.
26 Dec 1835 Red Bluff Baker Co...Dr Sir on the morning of the 16th instant, a
company of
whites to the number of eight, came across some forty or fifty Indians in the
Kiaka swamp, in
this county. The Indians fired on the whites and killed two men. Wm. H. Ferguson
and Allen
Perry and wounded two others--the citizens of the county then collected and got
assistance
from Early and Mustered something like forty five strong--and went into the
swamp the next
day to get the dead and bury them. When the company found them Ferguson was
stripped
naked and robbed of #380 with his jaw bone broken and every tooth knocked out
but one--
four severe cuts in the fact and on the head with the tomahawk. Perry's head was
beaten into
a complete jelly, his belly cut open his untrals taken out and hung on the
bushes, castrated,
and most shockingly hacked up and both eyes cut out. A Mr. Taber and Mr.
Musgrove were
wounded.. Three Indians killed and some wounded. The Indians have embodied
themselves in
the same swamp, supposed to be about one hundred. We are not collecting all the
men we
can to drive them away. I assure you the people are so alarmed it is a difficult
matter to collect
men for really when they leave home, their wives and children are in danger of
their lives, as well
as the loss of property.
I am fearful we will not be able to collect men enough. I regret very much the
muskets have
not yet reached our county. Securing the muskets would encourage the people a
great idea.
For heavens sake send us a volunteer company--the militia will rally around
them..act as spies,
and I shall then feel that we can drive very Indian from our country. It is
supposed there are
white men with the Indians. On the 20th there was another fight in our county
with the
Whites and Indians..the particulars I have not yet learned.
Enclosed I send you my bravet as Colonel of the 63rd Regiment.
Also a return to me of an election held in Byron on the 23rd
Inst for officers of a volunteer
company..The object in forming this company is only to act in this emergency and
they are
now in service..having found out the camp of the Indians, they are acting as
scouts until we
can collect a sufficient force to give the Indians battle. It would be well to
commission
them..the company may march and continue as a volunteer company for a long time.
Please
write me on receipt of this what course to pursue.
