Winder, the county seat of Barrow was originally a little settlement called
"Jug Tavern". Winder was named for a well known railroad builder - John H.
Winder.
Barrow's Jailhouse is now utilized as the Barrow County Museum. The
jailhouse (c 1915) has its own history complete with a hanging tower and its
cells. A mile or so south is Fort Yargo State Park, a shining example of
what a park should be.
By 1908 Winder had so many automobiles it was actually called the AutoCenter of
NE GA.
