Bryan County Pioneers came to Bryan and other counties in times that were certainly not considered genteel.  Many Native American Indians were quite hostile and the land that essentially was at large a dense pine forest, with nothing but dirt trails created by the Indians.

Some of the first settlers came by themselves, but for the most part they brought with them their families in covered wagons pulled by oxen, plow horses (if they were lucky), and mules.  Many of them had to leave behind their valued possessions along the way to make the wagon loads lighter so that the animals could survive.

John Wise has created a marvelous page listing the first settlers of Bryan County and expounding on the area that was in the first hundred years of Bryan County.  You can visit his terrific site here.
