Effingham County's first settlers, the Salzburgers, who
came to America as Lutheran immigrants
seeking religious freedom, inspired the Treutlen House
at New Ebenezer. They formed a safe
community in 1734 calling it Ebenezer, meaning "rock of
help". Here an orphanage was built
which they recognized as essential to the development of
their community. This orphanage is
recognized as the first orphanage to be organized in
America.
The original
orphanage at Ebenezer provided guidance and a safe haven
to a young man
named John Adam Treutlen and his mother who were fleeing
an abusive step-father.
This
young man later became the first elected Governor of the
state of Georgia. The Treutlen House
Project is named in his honor. Here future generations
will benefit from the programs this safe
dwelling and Family Resource Center provide. |
