The State of Georgia first began giving pensions to maimed Confederate soldiers in 1877. The law was gradually broadened to include soldiers who were disabled due to their military service and indigent soldiers. Indigent widows of Confederate soldiers who died in service or as a result of that service began receiving pensions in 1890. Pension funds also paid for funeral expenses for indigent soldiers and widows.
Pension files can include the application, correspondence regarding the pensioner, affidavits, receipts, transfer of assignments of pension funds, and military records. Pension applications generally give the soldier’s unit, date of enlistment and discharge, any disabling wounds received, his length of Georgia residence and place of residence at the time of application, his health at the time of application, and the value of personal property.
Widows’ pension applications include the husband’s name, name of his unit, date of their marriage, husband’s death date, and her means of support. Some applications include a copy of their marriage certificate.
Documents are indexed under the name of the person receiving the pension. The fullest form of the name found in the documents is used to index all documents in that pensioner’s file.
These records are from Record Group 058-01-001, Confederate Pensions and Records, Pension Office, Pension Applications. In addition to the main portion, this series includes Supplements 1 and 2. Because Supplement 2 has never been microfilmed, the supplements are being scanned first. We will then go back and scan the main portion of the series. Please watch for additions to this collection.
