Home to the Annual Mountain Midnight Coon Dog Howl

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A BEAUTIFUL FOREST WHERE INDIANS &  ANIMALS RAN FREE.  THE RIVERS WERE CLEAR, THE SPRINGS ICY, AND THE TROUT JUMPED HIGH INTO THE AIR.  WE WON'T MENTION THAT MANY OF THEM WERE EATEN BY
BEARS AND INDIANS, THAT'S A STORY FOR ANOTHER DAY.  TOWNS COUNTY TODAY STILL REMAINS ONE OF GEORGIA'S FINEST KEPT SECRETS.  ALTHOUGH MANY TOURISTS VISIT THIS COUNTY, THE AREA STILL HAS MUCH OF THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE OLD DAYS, AND MANY OF THE TRADITIONS HAVE CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.  THUS THE MIDNIGHT COON DOG HOWL.  WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU EXPECT AN EVENING FULL OF FUN LIKE THIS?  IN THE EARLY YEARS THE WEALTHY PEOPLE WOULD SUMMER IN THE MOUNTAINS TO ESCAPE THE HEAT, THIS AREA WAS A HAVEN FOR SUMMERERS.

Towns was created from parts of Union and Rabun Counties.  Towns formed the 117th county in Georgia, named for George Washington Bonaparte Towns, (Governor of Georgia 1847-1851).  Hiawassee is the county seat, also home to the yearly festival for the North GA Mountains.   SENTATOR ZELL MILLER, A FORMER GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA, WAS RAISED IN YOUNG HARRIS, AND ADDITIONALLY HE AND HIS WIFE WERE BOTH EDITORS & PUBLISHERS OF THE TOWNS COUNTY HERALD, A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER FROM THE COUNTY SEAT OF HIAWASSEE.
