Joe SMITH,(Uncle Joe) 78, passed away at his home near Calhoun early Friday morning, May 9, 1958. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Joe Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Earl Wyatt of Calhoun; two step-sons, Jack Carr of Cartersville and Dixie Duncan of Rome; one brother, Oscar Smith of Cave Spring; two sisters, Mrs. Buck Highfield of Lindale and Mrs. Bert Smith of Cedartown; and a number of grand-children, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday May 10 at 3 p.m. from Echota Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alvin Free and the Rev. Robert Brookshire. Nephews of Mr. Smith served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Nancy Springs Cemetery with Combs Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Information pertaining to Joe S. Smith was obtained by a telephone interview on January 15, 1997 with his daughter Vennie Joe (Smith) Wyatt. Joe's World War I registration gives his birth as April 25, 1884. His daughter Vinnie told me that his birthday was April 22, 1880.

Bertha May Ferguson STONE, 83, of Calhoun died March 7, 1977. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Coleman Stone and her parents John J. and Dora Curtis Ferguson. She was a member of the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Jewell and Billy Stone; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Steward; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 8, 1977 from the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Holcomb officiating. Pallbearers serving were Carl Samples, Bryant Beason, Guy Beason, F. A. Harmon, Dick Tribble, Joe Rawls and Jimmy Owen. Interment was in Blackwood Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth A. Brewer STONE,74, died February 2, 1939. Survivors include two brothers, T.G. Brewer and W.D. Brewer; four grandsons, Jack, Al, Frank & Sam Butler; one granddaughter, Mrs. Florene Kennedy. Interment was in Fain Cemetery.

Jewel McClain STONE, 65, died October 26, 1879 in Gordon County Georgia. Son of Murphy Coleman & Bertha Mae Ferguson Stone. He was a retired Carpenter and had one son, George C. Stone; one brother, Billy Stone; two nephews and niece. Funeral services were held on October 28, 1879 from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph C. Kimsey officiating. Interment was in Blackwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bryant and Guy Beason, Regan and Ray Stone, Dick Tribble and Jud Nelson.

Linton McClain STONE, 53, of Rome, died March 14, 1954. He was a member of North Broad Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brother Claude in 1924. Survived by his widow, Miss Ann Cantrell; one daughter, Mrs. Herman F. Ortwein; one sister, Mrs. Fred Fuller; and 3 brothers, Herman F., M.C., and F.S. Stone. Nieces and nephews also survive. Interment was in the East View Cemetery in Rome with the Rev. J. H. Holcomb officiating.

Mattie Lee Grant STONE, 74, died March 12, 1943. She is survived by her husband, Murphy P. Stone; children, Fred, Coley, Herman and Leonard Stone, Mrs. Fred Fuller and Mrs. Claud Stone; brothers and sisters, Sam Parker, Mrs. Dora Fouts, Joe Parker, Ed Parker, Burl Parker, Clements Parker and Mrs. Gus Duncan. Funeral services were held March 14, 1943 from Blackwood Church with the Rev. G. W. Silvers and the Rev. J. A. McArthur officiating. Interment was in Blackwood Cemetery. Jackson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Murphey Coley STONE, 78, died February 10, 1971 the oldest active Deacon of Blackwood Springs Baptist Church. Survived by wife, Bertha Ferguson Stone; two sons, Jewel and Billy Stone; 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, one brother, Herman Stone and one sister, Mrs. Fred Fuller. Funeral services were held February 12, 1971 from the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Holcomb, Rev. Ralph Kimsey and Rev. Leon Hensley officiating. Pallbearers were Guy Beason, Dick Tribble, Bryant Beason, F.A. Harmon, Joe Rawls and Ford Sexton. Interment was in the Blackwood Springs Cemetery. Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Murphy Postell STONE, 85, died July 31, 1947. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Fuller, 4 sons, M.C., H.F., L.M. and H.T. Stone, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Interment was in the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Robert Wiley (Bob) STONE, died Monday, January 31, 1955. He was preceded in death by his parents John C. and Charity Parker Stone. Survivors include his wife, Falby Kay Stone; one daughter, Miss Mary Lou Stone; one son, R. M. Stone; two brothers, W. C. Stone and Arthur C. Stone; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 2, 1955 at Blackwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Frank Cobb officiating. Burial was in the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
