To the Memory of Bro. Byrd Wilson
On the 15th of September 1917, the angel of death visited the home of Bro. Wilson and took him to a better land. Bro. Wilson was born February 16, 1826 in Jackson County, GA and moved from Jackson at 7 years old to Cherokee County and then moved to Gordon County in the year 1843. He married Miss Sarah Brown in 1852. She preceded him to the better land 15 years and 3 months. They had 12 children to their marriage. Six preceded him to the better world and six are living. Miss Dora Wilson, Mrs. Callie Cox near Cave Springs, Mr. W. M. Wilson, Mr. J. N. Wilson of Ringgold GA, Mrs. Sadie Whittemore and Miss Celia Wilson. At 8 o'clock on the night of the 15th while all nature was reposing an angel from Heaven came and whispered to him, and said Bro. Wilson you have toiled and labored long enough in this world, come follow me. I have a better home for you. It might have been his sainted wife who came to him on the night of the 15th and said to him; "Byrd, I have come after you. You have lived a sainted life for 91 years and 7 months and I want you to come and live with me in my father's Kingdom forever."
Bro. Wilson was a member of the Presbyterian church 33 years and was a consecrated Christian. He had been a mason about 50 years. He was made a mason in Oothecaloga Lodge at Calhoun, GA and was a charter member of Coosawattee Lodge No. 306. Lived a true member up to his death. He was also a post master of Coosawattee Lodge. Bro. Wilson was loyal to his church, true to his lodge and a devoted husband, kind and loving father. Bro. Wilson was a good man, loyal citizen and upright. He was loved by all who knew him. But loved best by those who knew him best. He was sick and lay in bed 43 days and never murmured or complained of anything hurting him. He bore his sickness quietly and patiently, just waiting for the Lord to call him up higher. He is gone, but never will be forgotten. He was buried at the family grave yard near home (Wilson Cemetery). Funeral services being conducted by Rev. Nelson Hinesley. After services the masons carried the remains to the grave, and buried it under Masonic honors.
Resolved that Coosawattee Lodge No. 306 F. & A. M. sympathize with the children in the death of their father. The community has lost a good man. The church a good member, the children a good father, and the lodge a true mason. Be it further resolved that these resolutions be printed in the Calhoun Times , and a copy be sent to the family.
