Black, Belle H.
Funeral services for Belle H. Black, 92, of Demorest were held at 2 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 20, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. George Deadwyler and
Carroll Jeffers officiated, with burial in Fairfield Cemetery, Demorest.
Mrs. Black died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Habersham Home following an extended
illness. Born in Habersham County on March 13, 1910, she was the daughter
of the late Christopher C. and Surcia Pruitt Hightower. Mrs. Black was a member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was retired from
Habersham Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edvin T. Black;
granddaughter, Judith Dituro; and grandson, Barry Black. Survivors include
her daughters and sons-in-law, Melba and James Barr of Demorest, Lavonda and
Bill Wright of Demorest; sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Coma Lee Black of
Demorest, Lowell and Imogene Black of Demorest; 13 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Hillside

Broome, Wilson
Funeral services for Wilson Broome, 91, of Hollingsworth were held at 11
a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Billy
Burrell officiated with burial in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, with
full military honors by the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No.
15 and Habersham County American Legion Post No. 84. Mr. Broome died
Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at a local nursing home following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County on Nov. 12, 1911, he was the son of the late Skid and
Fannie Simmons Broome. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Simmons
Broome; son, Melvin Broome; and daughter, Peggy Jean Broome. Mr. Broome
was a lifetime member of the Grant Reeves Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7720.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Mr. Broome was a
retired farmer and the last of his immediate family. Survivors include his
daughter, Bernice Ensurd of Bowling Green, Ky.; sons, Leroy Broome of Baldwin,
Clois Broome of Baldwin; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Carlan, Hoyt
MAYSVILLE – Funeral services for Hoyt Carlan, 68, of Maysville were
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. The Rev. Jacob
Armour, the Rev. Ralph Smith and the Rev. Robert Johnson officated, with burial
in the church cemetery. Mr. Carlan died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at
Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Carlan was
the son of the late Johnny and Annie Mae Reid Carlan. Survivors include
his wife, Mae P. Carlan of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Wesley and
Dottie Carlan of Homer, Melvin and Becky Carlan of Maysville; brothers and
sisters-in-law, the Rev. Swayne Carlan and Randall Carlan, both of Maysville,

Carmack, Ellen Gilreath
Funeral services for Ellen Gilreath Carmack, 32, of Gwinnett County, were
held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula. Mrs.
Gilreath died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003. Mrs. Gilreath was born in Atlanta
on April 11, 1970. She was a graduate of Central Gwinnett High School and North
Georgia College. She taught school in Gwinnett County and was active in her
church, Hebron Baptist. According to her family, she will be dearly missed but
they know she is with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Survivors
include her husband, John E. Carmack III; son, Jacob Edward Carmack; parents,
Edward F. “Sonny” and Eleanor K. Gilreath of Lawrenceville; brother and
sister-in-law, Greg and Tanya Gilreath of Lawrenceville; grandmother, Essie
Gilreath of McDonough; parents-in-law, John E. “Ed” Jr. and Nancy A. Carmack

Caudell, Christine McClure
LULA – Funeral services for Christine McClure Caudell, 69, of Lula were
held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Belton Baptist Church. The Rev. Cecil
Thomas, the Rev. Robert Nix and the Rev. Emmett Dale officiated. Burial was in
the church cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Morris officiating at graveside.
Mrs. Caudell died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at her residence following an
extended illness. Born in Habersham County on Feb. 11, 1933, she was the
daughter of the late Archie T. and Hattie Martin McClure. She was a retired
textile worker and a member of Belton Baptist Church. Mrs. Caudell loved to
travel. Survivors include her husband, Harold Caudell of Lula; sisters,
Clara Mae Wright of Alto, Eunice Berry of Clarkesville, Hazel Nicholson of
Detroit, Mich.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also

Collins, Annie
DAWSONVILLE – Funeral services for Annie Collins, 96, of Dawsonville were
held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Bearden Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Harold
Thompson officiated, with burial in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs.
Collins died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Willow Wood Nursing Center following a
period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Dawson County, she was
born July 28, 1906, the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Gregory. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Collins. Mrs. Collins was a
homemaker and a member of Harmony Baptist Church. Survivors include her
daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Rex Grogan of Cornelia; sister, Ethel
Jenkins of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Vic and Allison Grogan, Jo Anne and Tony
Addis; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Bearden

Collins, Willie Mae Hunt
Funeral services for Willie Mae Hunt Collins, 94, of Cornelia were held at
10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Wes
Davis officiated, with burial in Southview Cemetery, Thomaston. Mrs.
Collins died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at her residence following an extended
illness. Born in Clayton County on Jan. 1, 1909, she was the daughter of
the late Elijah and Emma Belle Cooper Hunt. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Charles B. Collins. Mrs. Collins was the former owner of Mays Grocery
in Ft. Valley for 17 years. She was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister, Irma Teague Pettingill of Toccoa. Whitfield

Dunnam, Donna Jean
Funeral services for Donna Jean Dunnam, 46, of Okeechobee, Fla., and
Blairsville, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, in the chapel of Mountain
View Funeral Home, Blairsville. President Thomas Booth officiated, with burial
at 2:30 p.m. in Level Grove Cemetery, Cornelia. Ms. Dunnam died Wednesday,
Jan. 15, 2003, at Kendrid Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., following an
extended illness. Born in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Feb. 7, 1955, she was
a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Murphy, N.C.
Survivors include her father and mother, Ben and Kathaleen Dunnam of
Blairsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Kellie Dunnam of Jackson,
Mich., Glen and Sandra Dunnam of Boise, Idaho; sister, Deborah S. Keber of
Boise, Idaho; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Stephen Bland of Starke,
Fla., Deanna and Paul Knowles of Okeechobee, Fla.; and many other relatives and

Services for Frank Eller, 44, of Cleveland, will not be held following
cremation. Mr. Eller died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at his residence
following an extended illness. Born in Rabun County on Sept. 13, 1958, he
was a restaurant worker and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include

Ellison, Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Clough
Funeral services for Elizabeth “Liz” Clough Ellison, 36, of Mt. Airy
will be held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 31, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin &
Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. J.R. Elrod will officiate, with burial in Hazel
Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Ellison died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Born in Stafford County, Va., on Oct. 10, 1966, she was the daughter of the late
Leon Melvin Clough Jr. Mrs. Ellison was the front-end manager of Ingles in
Clarkesville. She was of the Baptist faith and loved computers and crafts.
Survivors include her daughter, Krystal Kinsell of Ellenton, Fla.; son, Josh
Kinsell of Mt. Airy; mother and stepfather, Carol and John Franklin of Murphy,
N.C.; brother, Leon Melvin Clough III of Orlando, Fla.; and aunts and uncles.

Funeral services for Lola Estelle McClure English, 92, of Toccoa were held
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis
Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Mize and the Rev. Brian Stephens officiated, with
burial in Fairfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Clarkesville. Mrs. English
died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center. Born in
Franklin County on Oct. 6, 1910, she was the daughter of the late W.A. and
Melvina Love McClure. Living most of her life in Toccoa, she was the owner and
operator of English Grocery Store for more than 50 years. Mrs. Englis was a
member of Fairfield Baptist Church. She also attended Antioch Baptist Church for
a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Issac
English; sons, Ed English, Carol English; and granddaughter, Malinda Raxter.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Howard of Baldwin; grandson, Dale Howard
of Carrollton; granddaughters, Lelanda Davis of Toccoa, Phyllis Trotter of
Clarkesville; daughter-in-law, Betty English of Toccoa; four

Erwin, Jewell Church
Funeral services for Jewell Church Erwin, 84, of Rossville, formerly of
Clarkesville, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Hillside Memorial

officiated, with burial in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Erwin
died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at National Health Care, Rossville, following an
extended illness. Born in Habersham County on June 26, 1918, she was the
daughter of the late Lloyd and Birdie Lee Edwards Church. She was retired from
North Georgia Technical College and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Erwin; and brothers, Maurice
Erwin and Robert Erwin. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Carson of
Rossville; sisters, Estelle Anderson of Williamston, S.C., Christine Webb of
Belton, S.C.; one grandchild; five great-grandchildren; and two

Ferguson, Max Edward
Funeral services for Max Edward Ferguson, 72, of Gainesville were held at 3
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. The Rev. Richard
Scoggins officiated, with burial in Yonah Memorial Gardens. Mr. Ferguson
died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at a private nursing home following an extended
illness. Born in Habersham County on Sept. 7, 1930, he was the son of the
late Edward and Georgia Hardy Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson was a U.S. Navy veteran,
having served in the Korean War. He was a graduate of Furman University and was
employed by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and General Tire and Rubber
Company until 1947. He was co-founder of Atlanta Commercial Tire Inc. until he
retired in 1986 to pursue other interests. Survivors include his wife of
47 years, Mary Julia Harvill Ferguson; daughter and son-in-law, David and Carol
Ferguson Coy; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Mary Ferguson; sister-in-law;
three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made

Funeral mass for Maria G. Garcia, 73, of Baldwin will be held Tuesday evening,

will be held in Mexico. Mrs. Garcia died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at
Habersham County Medical Center. Born in LaBlanca, Texas, on April 16,
1929, she was the daughter of the late Cornelo and Guadalupe Rodriguez Garcia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Moises Garza. She was a

Funeral services for Roger D. Gibby, 50, of Cornelia were held at 2 p.m.

Mr. Gibby died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident. Born in Habersham County on Nov. 18, 1952, he was the son of the
late George Oscar and Mary Latrell Wilkinson Gibby. Mr. Gibby was a member of

Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at a private nursing home. Born in Banks County on
Sept. 19, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Almeadie Davidson
Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Benjamin Hawkins;
sister, Mae Dodd; and brother, Robert Miller. Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker
and a member of Enon Baptist Church. Survivors include her son and
daughter-in-law, Joseph C. and Rita Irvin Hawkins of Lula; granddaughter,

Funeral services for Hazel Church Zachry Hill, 89, of Clarkesville, will be held

Atlanta. Mrs. Hill died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Habersham County Medical

1913, she was the daughter of the late Edd and Callie Erwin Church. She was
preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Zachry; and second husband, John
Hill. Mrs. Hill was retired from sales with Sears, a homemaker and a

Funeral services for Edna Sue Garrison Hope, 89, of Lula were held at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 25, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home.
The Rev. Charles Eddy and the Rev. Pennie Eddy officiated, with burial in Lula
Belton Cemetery. Mrs. Hope died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Northeast
Georgia-Lanier Park campus following an extended illness. Born in Hall
County on Nov. 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Cora
Ayers Garrison. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Lula. Mrs. Hope
was an avid gardener and a member of Hickory Flat United Methodist Church, where
she was very active. Survivors include her husband, Howard B. Hope of
Lula; brother, Hoke S. Garrison of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister-in-law, Mattie
Clark Garrison of Lula; a nephew; and six nieces. McGahee-Griffin &

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Inurnment for Boyd Ivie, 86, of Cathedral
City, Calif., was held at Tranquility Falls Palm Springs Mausoleum. Mr.
Ivie died Jan. 4, 2003. Born on Nov. 22, 1916, he was the son of Bayless
E. and Maude B. Caudell Ivie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Lee
Dodd. Mr. Ivie was a heavy equipment mechanic for 28 years. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran, serving from 1944 to 1945. Survivors include his son, James Ivie
of Cathedral City, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister,
Eugenia Brown of Cornelia; and numerous relatives. Palm Springs Mortuary
of Cathedral City, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.
Jarrard, Frances L.
CANTON – Funeral services for Frances L. Jarrard, 73, of Canton were held
at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, in the Sosebee Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Chip Ray,

Cherokee Memorial Park. Mrs. Jarrard died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at
North Fulton Hospital. Mrs. Jarrard was a homemaker and of the Baptist

Funeral services for Willie Mae Bramblett Kimmell, 81, of Taylors, S.C., were
held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at First Assembly of God, Greenville, S.C.,
with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Kimmell died Thursday, Jan. 9,
2003. Born in Demorest, she was the daughter of the late Earnest and
Lorena Jordan Bramblett. She was a member of First Assembly of God.

Funeral services for Florene Ansley Lanier, 62, of Barnesville, formerly of

Yonah Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Lanier died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at
Christian Ministries Hospice, Griffin. Born in Habersham County on July 3,
1941, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ansley. A homemaker, Mrs. Lanier
loved to garden and listen to music. She was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services for Alejandro Lopez, 42, of Gainesville were held at 10:30
a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at St. Mark Catholic Church, Clarkesville, with Father

Scott, William Kim
GAINESVILLE – Funeral services for William Kim Scott, 30, of Lula will be
held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel,
Gainesville. The Rev. Jeff Worley will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park
Cemetery. Mr. Scott died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Emory University
Hospital following a courageous battle with leukemia for the past several
months. Born in Hall County on Sept. 16, 1972, he lived in Cornelia for
most of his life. Mr. Scott was a 1991 graduate of Habersham Central High
School, starring on the football team from 1988 to 1991 as defensive tackle,
while his twin brother was an offensive tackle. He, along with his twin brother,
was on the football team in 1991 when it won the region championship. Mr.
Scott graduated from the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in August 1995.
He was inducted into the Theta Chapter of Pi Sigma Eta fraternity on Dec. 6,
1994. After graduating, he was employed with Memorial Park Funeral Home for the
past several years. Mr. Scott loved, respected and had dedication for the
funeral profession. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of
Cornelia. He loved and played golf and was an avid Georgia fan. He was also a
member of the Commerce Masonic Lodge and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Mr. Scott was devoted to his family and the love of his life was his children.
He enjoyed watching his two young boys participate in basketball and T-ball. He
was loved and was a special husband, son and brother. He was also loved by his
mother-in-law and father-in-law. Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his
grandparents, A. B. and Selma C. Williams, and Earl and Lola Bennett.

the knowledge he gained from his love of reading books and was especially fond
of science fiction. Mr. Stacey was proficient with computers, excelling in

Fortenberry and the late Gladys Fortenberry. She was the owner and operator of
Floral Designs by Scarlett for 10 years. She was memorial chairperson for the
American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and a member of Habersham Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Adam Christopher Elrod;
brother, Hobert Fortenberry; and sister-in-law, Patsy Ash Fortenberry.

Widener, John C.
Memorial services for John C. Widener, 75, of Cornelia will be held at 3 p.m.
today, Jan. 14, in the Piedmont College Library. Mr. Widener died Sunday,
Jan. 12, 2003, at his residence. Born in Atlanta on Nov. 20, 1927, he was
a son of the late Perry Comfort and Martha Jane Covington Widener. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Greer. Mr. Widener was retired
from the Smithsonian Institute as chief exhibit specialist in the Natural
History Museum. He served as a Paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War
II. Survivors include his wife, Angela Crabb Widener of Cornelia;
stepchildren, Whitney McDowell and Jordan McDowell, both of Clarkesville; one
nephew; a great-niece and a great-nephew. Memorials may be made to Elachee

Williams, Randall Paul
Memorial services for Randall Paul Williams, 47, of Habersham County will be
held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 21, at Hazel Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Williams
died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center. Born in
Habersham County on Feb. 14, 1955, he was the son of the late George and Sara
Bruce Williams. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Williams.
Mr. Williams was a supervisor at Fieldale Corporation and enjoyed old cars and
racing. He was a member of Cornelia Christian Church. Survivors include
his brothers, Jerry Williams and Clint Williams, both of Habersham County.
