JOHN HILLARD CROMER
John H. Cromer, 63, of Route 2, Marshallville, passed away Friday afternoon, August 23, at a Montezuma Hospital. He had been in failing health for several months.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at LITTLE BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH, near Ideal, with the Rev. W. R. Lawhorn officiating. Burial was in the CHURCH CEMETERY with Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Red Cromer, W. T. Cromer, Junior Cromer, Calvin Cromer, Marvin Felker and Sammy Felker. Honorary Escort was composed of: W. S. Robinson, James Robinson, Dr. C. P. Savage, W. T. Jolly, Roger Streetman, Clyde Raburn, E. C. Raburn, Bud Cromer, J. B. Barfield, Rube Williams, Joe Hines, Tyson Ray, Randol Jinks, Arthur Jinks and S. O. Jones.
A native of Macon County, Mr. Cromer was employed by the State Highway Department for twelve years, operating the FERRY across the FLINT RIVER between Oglethorpe and Marshallville.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Carrie Taylor Cromer of Marshallville one son, William C. Cromer of Sylvester; four daughters, Mrs. Walter W. Lane and Mrs. John W. Lane, both of Butler, Mrs. Alton Ray of Marshallville and Mrs. Felton Crook of Reynolds; five brothers, Arthur Cromer of Oglethorpe, Isaac Cromer of Americus, Allen Cromer of Ideal, Homer Cromer and Lester Cromer, both of Reynolds; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Lawhorn of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Alfred Felker of Americus; and 23 grandchildren.

MARCUS NELSON [Estelle Griggers] CROMER Funeral services for Mrs. Estelle Griggers Cromer, 63, who died Tuesday morning in an Americus Hospital were held Wednesday in the SAND BETHEL METHODIST CHURCH in Taylor County, with Rev. W. R. Childree officiating. Burial was in the CHURCH CEMETERY. Mrs. Cromer was a native of Macon County, but had resided in Rupert for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Sand Bethel Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Marcus Nelson Cromer of Rupert; four sons, James William Cromer and John D. Cromer, both of Rupert, Nelson Edward Cromer of Panama City, Fla., and Carlton D. Smith of Phenix City, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Luther Lovick of Griffin; three brothers, Haywood Griggers, Douglas Griggers and Ernest Griggers, all of Montezuma; two sisters, Mrs. Carvis Parks of Montezuma and Mrs. Fannie Mae Cromer of Oglethorpe; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Alexander Crosby, 54, who passed away Saturday morning at a local hospital after a lengthy illness, were held Sunday afternoon in Macon. Services were held in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary with the Rev. C. M. Hicks officiating. Interment was in the EVERGREEN CEMETERY in Macon. Pallbearers - Not Copied. A native of Worth County, Mrs. Crosby had spent most of her life in Macon. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Marion E. Crosby of Macon; one son, E. H. Crosby, U. S. Navy; two grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Lynn Alexander of Montezuma, sisters, Mrs. Sankie Sears and Mrs. J. D. Jones, both of Montezuma; two nephews and a niece. Clements, 67, Passes After Long Illness; Rites Wednesday. Robert L. Clements, 67, passed away at a local hospital Tuesday morning, January 4, following a lengthy illness. He was a native of Buena Vista, coming to Montezuma as a young man where he operated a hardware business for thirty years, retiring in 1947, due to declining health. Mr. Clements was Past President of the Kiwanis Club and served as city councilman for 20 years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Edwin McKenzie of Montezuma; one brother, Felton L. Clements of Buena Vista; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Chapel of Smith-Tindol Funeral Home with the Rev. C. G. Ward and Rev. [Picture] Myron Benton Cheek, 59, died in a local hospital Tuesday as a result of burns sustained in his flaming automobile earlier in the day. It is believed that an open can of paint thinner exploded, possibly from a cigarette spark as Mr. Cheek was driving between Montezuma and Oglethorpe. He either jumped or was thrown from the car when it ran off the road in flames. Mr. Cheek, a resident of Oglethorpe was the Plymouth-DeSota Dealer in Montezuma. He was president of the Oglethorpe Lions Club and on the board of stewards at the Oglethorpe Methodist Church. Funeral services were held today [Thursday] at the Oglethorpe Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Thomas and the Rev. W. W. Whaley officiating. Burial was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY. November 5, 1970 JAMES EDWARD CROOK Funeral Notice for James Edward Crook. Funeral services for James Edward Crook, 58, of Montezuma were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, from the Chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, Interment was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY in Montezuma. Rev. Randy Rivers of Marshallville and Rev. Ken Bush of Montezuma officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Dock Luckie, Armond Law, B. G. Bickley, Herbert Hurdle, Roy Windham, Griff Etheridge, Tommy Law and Dr. A. J. Morris. Mr. Crook passed away Friday morning in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Taylor County but had lived all his adult life in Macon County. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Marshallville Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Malcolm Crook of Warner Robins; two brothers, Hugh Crook and Earl Crook of Marshallville; four sisters, Mrs. Fred Jackson of Byron, Mrs. James Hogan of Clearwater, Florida, Mrs. J. S. Ellison of Perry and Mrs. Louie Scarci of Pittsburg, Penn.; two grandchildren, Debbie and Mark Crook of Warner Robins. MRS. HARVEY CHILDS [Dorothy Estelle Parker] CROMER. Mrs. Cromer was 82 when she died December 19, 2000. She is buried in LITTLE BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY. At the time the obit was posted, I did not know that her maiden name was PARKER. Also, the obit mentions her sister, who would be Lucille PARKER Hill of Thomaston. They are both daughters of Bascom Sentel Parker [1886 - 1973] and Estella hendrick Parker [1892-1975 of Marion County. The above additions and corrections are compliments of Keith Hill. [Zimmie Taylor] COLEMAN Rites Held At Twin City, Ga. For Mrs. W. P. Coleman. Mrs. Zimmie Taylor Coleman, widow of Walter P. Coleman, died on September 28, in Phoenix, Arizona. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church in Twin City, Ga. with burial in the COLEMAN FAMILY CEMETERY near there. She is survived by a brother, Harcourt Taylor [Sr.] of Houston, Texas and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Coleman was the former Miss Zimmie Taylor of Marshallville and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bob Taylor, pioneer citizens here. [Note: A WONDERFUL STORY - Mr. and Mrs. Bob Taylor were buried in the Marshallville Cemetery Unmarked. They were: Robert T. Taylor b. 1860 d. October 1914 & Georgia Augusta "Gussie" [Gammage] Taylor b.1862 - d. 9-4-1922] Sometime in the year 2000, Robert Harcourt Taylor, Jr. called Marshallville City Hall and they in turn called me to help Robert Harcourt ":Bob" Taylor find the birth and death dates for his Grandparents. I called him in Texas, he explained what he wanted to do and he said, "I am 75 years old, so I had better hurry". With the info that he gave me, I was able to find these dates and he marked their graves in the Marshallville Cemetery. Citizens & Georgian - Montezuma, Ga. September 16, 1954 MRS. JAMES H. [Nancy Catherine Holland] CLARK Mrs. Nancy Clark Rites To Be Held At 10:00 This Morning. Mrs. Nancy Catherine Clark, resident of Montezuma for the past thirty years, died Tuesday in a local hospital after a short illness. She was born in Cairo and is the widow of the late James H. Clark. She is survived by one son, J. D. Clark of Montezuma; one sister, Mrs. Ed Wisham of Montezuma; one brother, W. A. Holland; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held this morning [Thursday] at 10:00 from the First Baptist Church of Monteuma with the Rev. C. G. Wardf officiating. Interment will be in the FELTON CEMETERY. Joseph [Joe] Ransom Clark, well known resident of Marshallville died early Monday night in a Montezuma hospital after an illness of three days. He was born February 21, 1904, the son of the late George P. and May Clisby Clarke, and had spent his entire life in Macon County. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Katherine Lowe; two sons, Joe Clarke, Jr. and Clisby Clarke, both of Marshallville; two sisters, Mrs. John Harber of Atlanta and Mrs. C. B. Morgan of Cochran. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 from the Marshallville Methodist Church with the Rev. A. A. Waite and the Rev. Charles Evans officiating. November 22, 1945 DAVID WALTON CHILDS, JR. Scarlet Fever Fatal To David Childs, Jr., Four Years Old. Funeral services for David Walton Childs, Jr., four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. David Childs, Sr. of Oglethorpe, were held Tuesday morning, November 20, at 10:30 o'clock. The little boy died of scarlet fever at a local hospital at noon Monday. David was born on June 15, 1941, near Oglethorpe and has one sister, Margaret Anne, who is only a few months old. His mother was the former Hazel Hambrick of Oglethorpe. Other survivors include his grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Childs and Mrs. Virlyn Hambridk, an aunt, Miss Maggie Childs, and a number of other close relatives. Services were conducted from the Montezuma Funeral Home, the Rev. Chas. H. Kopp officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. L. Whitley of Mauk. Interment was in COUNTY LINE CEMETERY. Hambrick [see obit] and Mrs. Virlyn Hambrick [See obit] Citizens & Georgian - Montezuma, Ga. October 25, 1945 MISS OREOLA CHEVES Final Rites Friday For Miss Oreola Cheves, Beloved Educator. Montezuma hearts were saddened last Thursday by the passing of Miss Oreola Cheves, well-known and beloved educator and civic leader. Miss Oreola, as she was known to her many devoted friends, died at a Montezuma hospital where she went for treatment on Monday. She had been in declining health for several months. Born in Macon County on May 26, 1869, the daughter of the late Rev. A. J. Cheves, a native of Crawford County and Anna M. Sanford Cheeves of Penfield, Ga. Miss Oreola spent her youth here and when she retired from teaching twelve years ago, returned to Montezuma to make her home with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Cellie Cheves. Miss Oreola was a former teacher in the schools of Montezuma, Columbus and in the Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville. She was president of the Montezuma Garden Club and Society Editor of the Citizens & Georgian, a spot which she had filled for several years. She was one of the most active and influential member of the First Baptist Church here. Much more - Not copied. Surviving Miss Oreola are one brother, Langdon C. Cheves of Montezuma, three nieces, Mrs. L. M. Lester of College Park; Mrs. Harold Guest of Montezuma; Mrs. John Sheffield of Americus, eight nephews, Sanford Cheves of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Judson Cheves of Gainesville, Fla, Howard Cheves of Greenville, S. C., Isaac Cheves of Fairburn, Ga., Rodney [?] Cheves of Atlanta; Palmer Cheves of Montezuma; and L. C. Cheves, Jr. U.S.Army, overseas. Services were conducted from the Montezuma Funeral Home Friday afternoon, October 19, with the Rec. Chas H. Kopp officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles A.
