MRS. ROBERT CLARENCE [Addie Stewart] COLLIER, SR. [Picture on Front Page]

Mrs. Addie Stewart Collier, a beloved Montezuma resIdent for fifty years, passed away July 3, 1972 at New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Funeral services were held from the Montezuma First Baptist Church, Tuesday, July 4, 1972, with the pastor, Rev. Ken Bush officiating. Interment was in FELTON CEMETERY.
Mrs. Collier was a native of Yatesville, Georgia. She was the widow of the late R. C. Collier, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1967. They had lived in Montezuma since 1922.
Mrs. Collier was a member of the Baptist Church and a member of the Woman's Missionary Union and had at one time held office as president of the W. M. U. She was president of the Montezuma Music Lovers' Club from 1929-31, and until her death, an honorary member. She was past-president of the Woman's Club and past president of the Third District of Federation of Woman's Clubs.
Mrs. Collier is survived by one son, R. C. Collier, Jr. of Montezuma; one daughter, Mrs. R. O. Crenshaw, New Smyrna Beach, Florida; one sister, Mrs. J. C. Mitchell of Sanford, Florida; four grandsons, J. Patrick Ralls of Vacilla, California; Robert C. Collier, III of Atlanta; Robert and Stewart Crenshaw of Orlando, Florida; three granddaughters, Mrs. Carolyn C. Johnson of Orlando; Mrs. Camille C. Miller of Colorado, Springs, Colo., and Betty Ralls of Sanford, Fla.

Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

EDGAR THOMAS COKER

Funeral services for Edgar Thomas Coker, 83, of Andersonville were held from the Watson-Mathews Funeral Homer Chapel in Montezuma, Tuesday AM, February 29. Rev. Leighton Norris, Rev. Ramos Freeman and Rev. Raburn Waller officiated and the following served as pallbearers: Billy Coker, Thomas Johnson, Barry Coker, Clyde Smith, Ken Davis, Charlie Hart, Tommy Kitchens, and Billy Griggs. Interment followed in OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL GARDENS CEMETERY.
Mr. Coker passed away February 27, 1972 in a local hospital after a short illness. He was a lifelong resident of Macon County and a retired farmer.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Quida Chapman Coker of Andersonville; two sons, William T. Coker of Andersonville and Rufus Coker of Crestview, Florida; two daughters, Miss Frances Coker and Mrs. J. R. Johnson, both of Andersonville; one brother, Charlie Coker of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

MRS. JAMES M. [Martha Sue Bledsoe] CLARK

Mrs. Martha Sue Bledsoe Clark, 56, of Montezuma, Georgia, died Wednesday, June 24, 1987 in Charter Northside Hospital, Macon, Georgia. Graveside services were held at 11 AM Friday, June 26 in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY. The Rev. Guy Sayles officiated.
Mrs. Clark was born in Dooly County Georgia on May 28, 1931, the daughter of Robert B. Bledsoe and Emmie McDowell Bledsoe. She was a resident of Montezuma since 1949. She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper and a member of the First Baptist Church of Montezuma. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors are her husband, James M. Clark; two daughters, Mrs. Elaine C. DeLoach of Vidalia, Mrs. Pam C. Humber of Ellerslie; a son, Michael B. Clark of Montezuma; five grandchildren, Jay DeLoach and Julienne DeLoach, Tiffany and Clark Humber and Michelle Clar; three brothers, Sidney S. Bledsoe of Perry, Hershel H. Bledsoe and Lyndon B. Bledsoe, both of Pinehurst; four sisters, Miss Ruby Bledsoe of Milledgeville, Mrs. Nettie Lou Rowe of Newnan, Mrs. Sarah Frances Bowers anbd Mrs. Mary Jo Woodruff, both of Fort Valley.
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES C. CARTER

Funeral services for Charlie C. Carter, 75 year old resident of Montezuma, were conducted Friday afternoon, October 28, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. C. C. Edmondson and Rev. C. G. Ward officiated and interment followed in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY.

Pallbearers were Palmer Cheves, Wister Ellis, Hill Peaster and R. L. Brand.

Mr. Carter died Thursday, October 27, at a rest home in Geneva, Ga. after an extended illness. He was born in Toccoa, Ga., and moved to Montezuma during his early manhood. He worked for 25 years as a mail messenger at the local Post Office, retiring ten years ago. He was a member of Montezuma Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. A. McGee of Greenville, S. c. and nieces and nephews.

ALLIE B. CHAPMAN

Funeral services for Miss Allie Chapman, 80, of Macon, Georgia, who died April 13, after a lengthy illness, were held Wednesday, April 15, from the Assembly of God Church in Macon. Burial was in the PINE LEVEL METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY in Macon County.

Miss Chapman was born in Macon County but had lived in Macon, Georgia for the past forty years moving there from Ideal. She was retired from Happ Manufacturing Company and was a floor superintendent at Camp Wheeler during World War II. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her foster children, Mrs. J. C. McCall and Irwin Myers, both of Macon and William H. Myers of Atlanta; two brothers, G. C. Chapman and William C. Chapman, both of Ideal; nieces, Mrs. Jessie Williams of Thomaston and Mrs. Harold Fowler of Ideal and nephew, Marvin Chapman of Ideal.

EVERETT CROMER

Funeral services for Everett Cromer of Montezuma were held Wednesday, July 21, 1971 from the Little Bethel Freewill Baptist Church near Ideal. Rev. J. B. Lumpkin, pastor, officiated and burial followed in the LITTLE BETHEL FREEWILL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY.
Serving as pallbearers were Harvey Shorts, James Cromer, Danny Harris, Edward Thorton, Bobby Cromer, Leon Thompson and Jimmy Cromer.
Mr. Cromer passed away Monday at his residence after a lengthy illness at the age of 43 [ Born about 1928] . He was retired from Champion Mobile Home Builders, a life-long resident of Macon County and a member of Little Bethel.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Pauline S. Cromer of Montezuma; two daughters, Earlene Cromer and Sue Cromer of Montezuma; four sons, Mickey Cromer of Tifton, Arthur Lee Cromer with the U.S.Army, Viet Nam, Ervin Cromer of Americus and Earl Cromer of Montezuma; Mother, Mrs. Arthur Marvin Cromer of Oglethorpe; one brother, Ralph Cromer of Oglethorpe; three sisters, Mrs. Hershel Thompson, Mrs. Dewey Barfield and Mrs. James E. Thompson, all of Oglethorpe.

ISAAC  LUTHER  CROMER

Americus – Isaac Luther Cromer, 93, died Sunday in a local nursing home.  Born in Macon County, he was a son of the late John Cromer and Dora Layfield Cromer and was the widower of Bessie C. Cromer.  He was a retired farmer and a member of New Life Baptist Church.

  Survivors; Children, James Calvin Cromer and Clifton Eugene Cromer, both of Americus; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

  Services 11 AM Tuesday in Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, Montezuma.

Burial KELLEY CEMETERY, Oglethorpe.  The Rev. Johnny Cromer will officiate.  Visitation:  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight in the funeral home.

Nell Vanzant Cromer, 61, of Ellaville, died May 18, 1988 at the Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus.
Services were held last Friday at the Congregational Holiness Church in Montezuma with burial in KELLEY CEMETERY in Oglethorpe.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie Cromer of Ellaville; two sons, James Otis Cromer of Montezuma and Kenny Cromer of Macon; daughter, Mrs. Alvin Cannon of Macon; four stepsons, Robert Brown, Joseph Cromer and Raymond Cromer, all of Ellaville, and Gene Cromer of Butler; four stepdaughters, Wanda Highnote of Leslie, Virginia Zimmerman of California, Vernia Mae White of Americus and Lois C. Underwood of Ellaville; brother, James Vansant of Montezuma; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Layfield of Montezuma and Annette Grant of Macon; nine grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Watson Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for John Richard Caldwell of Columbus, Ga. were held Monday, August 2, from the Chapel of Watson Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma. Rev. C. G. Ward and Rev. Kenneth Bush officiated and burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY in Montezuma.
Mr. Caldwell was a resident of the Montezuma Nursing Home. He passed away there July 31, at the age of 52. A native of Clay County, Alabama. Mr. Caldwell retired from the U. S. Army on July 1, 1970 after 25 years of service. He was a Baptist and a Mason
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruth Ellen Scarlock Caldwell of Columbus, Ga.; one son. Dr. Charles Kenneth Caldwell of Reidsville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Wibbie and Kimberly of Reidsville, N.C. four sisters, Mrs. Louise Clancy of Chickamauga, Ga., Mrs. M. A. Reagan of Fort Valley, and Mrs. Fred Bailey of Montezuma and Mrs. Buford Cason of Vienna; one brother; James M. Reagan of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Ebson Cook, age 84, died Tuesday night, September 28, 1971 at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Friday in the Watson-Mathews Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Gardner officiating. Burial was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY with full Masonic rites at graveside. Serving as pallbearers were Ed Law, Morris Stafford, Douglas Hawks, Edgar Brown, Jack Grizzle and K. W. Highnote.
Mr. Cook was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. He had lived in Florida for a number of years and was retired from the Florida Road Dept. He had made his home in Andersonville for 12 years. He was a member of the Oglethorpe Baptist Church and Travelers Rest Masonic Lodge No. 65.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Jessie Alma Cook of Andersonville; one daughter, Mrs. John Keiley of Andersonville; two sons, C. G. Cook of Whittier, Calif., and Edward Cook of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

MRS. JAMES SAMUEL [Mildred Lucas] CROXTON, 73.

Mildred Lucas Croxton, 73, retired school teacher, and James Samuel Croxton, 81, retired bank president, died within one day of each other and are joined in death as they were in life.
Mildred Lucas Croxton, died Monday, October 1, 1984 at Macon County Medical Center - one day before her husband. James Samuel Croxton, died at The Oaks, in Marshallville, Georgia on October 2, 1984.
Services were held aty 2 pm on Wednesday, October 3, 1984, at Montezuma First Baptist Church with burial in BEUNA VISTA, GEORGIA CEMETERY. The Revs. Ward, Bush and Cosper officiated.
Mrs. Croxton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lucas, was a native of Grady Co., Ga. and was born January 11, 1911, and had lived in Montezuma for the past 50 years.
She was a graduate of Valdosta State Colege for Women and a retired Macon County school teacher. She was past president of both the Montezuma Garden Club and Montezuma Music Club.
MR. CROXTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Samuel Croston, was a native of Marion County, Georgia and was born on May 23, 1903, and had lived in Montezuma for the past 59 years.
He formerly served as Supervisor on The Ocmulgee River Soil Conservation Dist. for 31 years, a president of the Citizen National Bank for 37 yrs.,in 1934 named youngest bank president in the United States, a treasurer, of the Kiwanis Club for 55 years and was a farmer.
Mr. and Mrs. Croxton both served Jesus Christ through the First Baptist Church of Montezuma.

Survivors include their daughter, Mrs. David H. Hubert of Atlanta; her sister, Mrs. Byron White of Cairo, her half sister, Mrs. Joe Bernath of Pensacola, Fla.; his sister, Miss Martha Croxton of Buena Vista; and his brother, M. N. Croxton of Buena Vista.

MRS. CHARLES FERDINAND [Marie Elma Jackson] CARSON, 80.

Mrs. Elmer J. Carson, age 80, died Sunday, October 14, 1984 at the Peach Co., Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 17, 1984 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Reynolds. Burial was in the CARSON FAMILY CEMETERY. Rev. Bill Hayes and Rev. W. B. Milton officiated. Goddard Funeral Home of Reynolds had charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Carson was a native of Bibb County. She had lived in Reynolds for 30 years having moved there from Arlington, Va. Mrs. Carson was a former elementary school principal, teacher and reading consultant, after she retired she served as a private tutor. Mrs. Carson received her teaching certificate from the Georgia Normal School in Atherns, Ga. She received her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Columbia University. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Reynolds and the Jenny Hinton Sunday School Class, also the Reynolds womans Club, the UDC, and a former member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers society.
Survivors include one son, C. Ferdinand Carson of Greensvoro, N.C.; two sisters, Dorothy E. Hazelton of Greensboro, N.C., Kathryne J. Flynn of Flemington, W. VA. two grandchildren, Charles Randal Carson of Gaithersburg, MD. & Catherine C. Myer of Fairfax, Va.

Mrs. Vera McLendon Carter, age 74, of Oglethope, Georgia, died Monday, October 22, 1984 in the Macon County Medical Center. Funeral services were held at 4 pm Tuesday, October 23, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY. The Rev. Homer Fowler, the Rev. Jack Neill and the Rev. Jimmy Sharp offociated.
Mrs. Carter, a native of Schley County, Georgia, was born October 16, 1910, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie McLendon. She resided in Oglethorpe since 1929, was a homemaker and a member of County Line Methodist church.
Her survivors are her husband, Paul Carter of Oglethorpe; one daughter, Mrs. Paulette Carter Josey of Montezuma; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn M. Carter of Reynolds, Mrs. Minnie Jewell Peek of Andersonville; two brothers, G. W. McLendon of Andersonville, Jessie M. McLendon of Ellaville; onw granddaughter, Miss Paula Tiffany Josey of Moantezuma.
Pallbearers were Charles Heath, Sammy Lee, W. R. Rooks, Alvin McLendon, Michael McLendon, Steven McLendon.

Mrs. Bessie C. Cromer, 75, a former resident of Montezuma, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 7, 1985 in Bay Convalescent Home in Panama City, Florida. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Saturday, August 10, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Burial followed in KELLEY CEMETERY, Oglethorpe, Ga., The Rev. T. J. Waldrop officiated.
Mrs. Cromer, a native of Macon County, was born December 12, 1909, a daughter of Frank Cromer and Dora Etheridge Cromer. She resided in Panama City for the past 5 years, was a homemaker and a member of New Life Baptist Church in Oglethorpe, Ga.
Survivors are her husband, Isaac Cromer of Panama City; two sons, James Calvin Cromer of Panama City, Clifton Eugene Cromer of Buena Vista, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Eva mae Barnes of Montezuma, Mrs. Effie Mayo of Oglethorpe; five grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.

MRS. M. L. CROMER CLAIMED BY DEATH SATURDAY P.M.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Lula Cromer were conducted Sunday afternoon 3:30 o'clock, at the PLEASANT HILL BAPTIST CEMETERY, the service being in charge of Rev. Ran Lawhorn.
Mrs. Cromer was born May 24, 1866, in Macon County, and resided in Taylor County since 1886, when she married Mr. Shep A. Cromer, who preceded her in death by 17 years.
During her active years, Mrs. Cromer was a devoted member of the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Schley County.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lula Cromer Taylor of Cordele; Mrs. Bessie Cromer Bridges of Ft. Valley; Mrs. Pearl Cromer Guy of Ellaville; and Mrs. Essie Cromer Blair of Butler. Also surviving are a brother and a sister, Mr. Joe Brewer and Mrs. Sallie Brewer Guy of Tifton as well as a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers at Sunday's funeral included Messrs. Arthur S. Blair, Vaughn Blair, John Guy, Morris Bridges and Fred Brewer.
Honorary Pallbearers included Messrs. Shell Guy, Murray Blair, Jule Blair, Claude A. Blair, Alton Taylor and Otwell Taylor.

Funeral Services For Ernest J. Cromer Held Wednesday.
Funeral services for Ernest James Cromer, 50, a local sawmill operator, were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Oglethorpe Baptist church.
The Rev. Melvin York, the Rev. U. W. Rollins and Sister Lottie Wilburn officiated and burial followed in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.
Pallbearers were Clovis Layfield, Ed Mayo, Marvin Felker, Herman Layfield, Lamar Cromer and Everett Cromer.
Mr. Cromer died Tuersday following a long illness. He was a member of the Oglethorpe Baptist Church and a native of Macon County.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Barfield Cromer; one daughter, Mrs. Buck Mayo of Oglethorpe; two sons, James Cromer and Larry Cromer of Oglethorpe; his mother, Mrs. Dora Cromer of Ideal; two sisters, Mrs. Dolly Lawhorn of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Ruthy Felker of Americus; six brothers, Arthur Cromer, Allen Cromer, Lester Cromer and Homer Cromer of Oglethorpe, Hillard Cromer of Marshallville and Isaac Cromer of Americus and one grandson.
Smith-Harris Funeral Home of Montezuma was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Cromer, 77, Dies Unexpectedly; Funeral Held Sunday.
Funeral services for Frank Pierce Cromer, 77, who died unexpectedly Saturday at his residence in Oglethorpe, were held Sunday afternoon at Whitewater Baptist Church. The Rev. U. W. Rollins, the Rev. Carl Ayers and the Rev. A. B. Hosea officiated.
Pallbearers were Sammie Odom, Buck Mayo, James Cromer, J. B. Barfield, Herman Layfield and Morrison Felker.
Mr. Cromer is survived by his wife [2nd wife], the former Lillie McDaniel; four daughters, Mrs. Camilla Cromer, Mrs. Ike Cromer and Mrs. H. G. Barnes, all of Americus, and Mrs. Ed Mayo of Oglethorpe; two sons, Robert Cromer and Otis Cromer, both of Oglethorpe; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Smith-Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

L. C. Cheves, Sr., Former Resident, Passes Wednesday.
Langdon C. Cheves, Sr., 82, former resident of Montezuma, died at a local hospital early Wednesday night after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Cheves was born and reared at Spalding, the son of the late Rev. A. J. Cheves and Anna Maria [Sanford] Cheves. He was a prominent businessman and church leader of Montezuma before going to Americus to reside about eight years ago.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold Guest of Montezuma, Mrs. John W. Sheffield of Americus, one son, Dr. Langdon C. Cheves of Montezuma; three granddaughters and four grandsons and four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Smith-Tindol Funeral Home.

Jake P. Culler Buried At Cordele.
Cordele, Ga. - Funeral services for Jake Phillip Culler, 73, who died Friday were held Sunday, November 16, 1958 with Dr. Henry Brooks and the Rev. Clifton E. Fite officiating.
Burial was in SUNNYSIDE CEMETERY [in Cordele, Ga.]
Mr. Culler was a retired railroad conductor. He was a native of Houston County and lived in Montezuma prior to moving to Cordele 50 years ago. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Shrinter.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jake P. Culler of Cordele; two daughters, Mrs. George B. Pierce of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mrs. Annette Culler Ward of Washington D. C.; two sons, Jake P. Culler, Jr. of Bainmbridge and Jack B. Culler of Atlanta; his stepmother, Mrs. J. J. Culler, Sr. of Macon; three sisters, Mrs. Lollie Oliver of Montezuma; Mrs. D. T. Jennings and Mrs. Kellette Hayes, both of Americus, two half-brothers, JIM M. CULLER of Marshallville and J. J. Culler of Kentucky, a half sister, Mrs.. Joe Osborn of Brevard, N.C.; and one step sister, Miss Mary Buchanan of Macon; Four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Final Rites To Be Held Thursday For Ralph Christopher
Ralph Allen Christopher, 51, died at a local hospital Tuesday, November 25, 1958, following an illness of about six weeks.
Mr. Christopher, son of the late William Thomas and Core Lee Smith Christopher, was a native of Montezuma. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Macon where he resided for several years.
Survivors include two sisters, Miss Hazel Christopher of Montezuma and Mrs. J. W. Hale of Wilmington, N. C.; one brother, W. T. Christopher of Montezuma; two nephews, Robert C. Collins and Paul Collins of Montezuma; three nieces, Mrs. Charles N. Watson of Atlanta, Misses Mary and Hazel Hale of Wilmington, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Montezuma Methodist Church Thursday afternoon with the Rev. L. E. Williams, pastor, and the Rev. W. S. Johnson officiating. Smith-Tindol Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial in FELTON CEMETERY.

Dewey Collier, 47, Dies After Lengthy Illness; Rites Tuesday.
Dewey Collier, 47, of Byromville, died at a local hospital Sunday, November 30, 1958, after several years illness. He was a native of Dooly County and a member of Byromville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris Lockerman Collier; three daughters, Mrs. Nell Carroll of Warner Robins; Misses Katherine and Deborah Collier of Byromville, one son, Joel Collier of Byromville; one granddaughter, Miss Jackie Carrol of Warner Robins; mother, Mrs. Alice Collier of Montezuma; two brothers, J. D. Collier of Vienna and Irma Collier of Sylvester; two half-brothers, Wood Collier and Luther Collier of Byromville; two half-sisters, Mrs. George Webb and Mrs. Nora Hamblin of Birmingham, Ala. several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from Byromville Baptist Church with interment in the BYROMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY. The Rev. D. L. Kight of Macon and the Rev. C. P. Russell officiated.
Pallbearers were: John D. Collier, N. G. Webb, Jimmie Lee Collier, Wood Collier, Luther Collier and Irma Collier. Smith Tindol Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rollins officiating. Burial was in the MT. PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY with Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cox who was a native of Butler and a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, died Saturday in Miami, Fla. She had lived in Oglethorpe for the past 11 years.
Survivors include a son, I. P. Cox of Oglethorpe; four daughters, Mrs. R. M. Wilkes, Mrs. W. J. Hester and Mrs. W. L. Edmondson, all of Miami, Fla., and Mrs.a G. A. Roberts, Jr. of Pulaski, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Kirksey and Mrs. C. A. Patrick of Dooling; a brother, Frank Peterman of Butler and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Allen Coogle, 82, of Oglethorpe, who died Saturday at a local hospital, were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Lutheran Church in Oglethorpe. The Rev. C., A. Phillips and the Rev. Melvin York officiated. Burial was in MT. ZION LUTHERAN CEMETERY.
Pallbearers were T. J. Coogle, F. C. Coogle, G. H. Coogle, R. L. Coogle, R. M. Coogle and C. B. Gilmore.
Mrs. Coogle was a native of Marion County and a member of Mt. Zion-St. Luke's Church.
Survivors include one son, Tom L. Coogle of Oglethorpe; two sisters, Mrs. D. B. Bedenbaugh of Albany and Mrs. R. D. Parker of Plains; one brother, John F. Allen of Miami, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Coogle's Death Date is listed as February 7, 1959 but, if, this paper was printed on Thursday, March 12, 1959 and she is reported as having died last Saturday, that would be March 7, 1959 rather than February 7, 1959. I will try to remember to check the date on the marker when I go back to Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Survivors, other than his parents are maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Law of Oglethorpe, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Gravitt of Oglethorpe; two step brothers, Timothy Cranford and Russ Mann; a step sister, Kayreen Cranford.

Mr. Coats was born August 31, 1956 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of William Coats, Jr. and Anne King Coats. He had resided in Atlanta for the past three years and was manager of a K-Mart store. He attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus and Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1978 to 1982.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Marsha Walters of Vandalia, Ohio, Miss Lynn Coats of Vandalia, Ohio; a brother, Robert S. Coats of Oglethorpe, Ga.

Mrs. Carter was born May 19, 1902 in Marshallville, Georgia, the daughter of Thomas John Martin and Georgia Breedlove Martin. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama.
Survivors are her husband, Stuart B. Carter; two nieces, Mrs. Dorothy Felker of Atlanta, Mrs. Ann Taylor of Savannah; three nephews, William Jolly of Atlanta, William Martin of Savannah, A. H. Hinman of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. D. D. Newberry of West Palm Beach, Fla, and Mrs. R. W. Clark of Macon; and one sister, Mrs. Charles Gammage of Americus.
Graveside services were held in Oglethorpe Saturday with Smith-Tindol Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

James G. Cromer, Former Citizen, Dies At Tifton.
Funeral services for James Greer Cromer, 57, retired Tifton farmer, were held Saturday in Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Chula, with burial in MT. ZION CEMETERY near Chula. Rev. J. E. Keen and Rev. L. B. Allen officiated.
Mr. Cromer died Friday at his home on Route 3, Tifton, after a long illness. He was born January 22, 1904 in Macon County, son of the late John Jacob Cromer and Ella Virginia Brady Cromer. He had lived in Tift County since 1926.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mattie Mangham Cromer of Tifton; two sons, Reuben Ray Cromer of Vienna and Billy Ronald Cromer of Tifton; a daughter, Glenda Jean Cromer of Tifton; two brothers, Paul Cromer and Horace Cromer, both of Ideal; a half-brother, Reuben Burnett of Marietta, three sisters, Mrs. Janie Benford of Albany; Mrs. Mary Oates of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Annie Sellers of Americus and a half-sister, Mrs. Maxie Avery of Jacksonville, Fla.

HAROLD WHITE COLLINS

Harold W. Collins, 62, Dies of Heart Attack Saturday.
Harold White Collins, 62, prominent Montezumian, died unexpectedly, Saturday morning, September 16, 1961 at his residence here after suffering a heart attack.
A life long resident of Macon County, Mr. Collins attended the local schools and Oglethorpe University. He had been bus agent here for 15 years, also serving as Western Union operator during that time. He had also been the weather observer for this area for 35 years and was recently recognized for his faithful service by the U.S. Weather Bureau.
Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church here, of which he was a member. Sunday afternoon The Rev. C. G. Ward, Dr. B. E. Donehoo and the Rev. Ronald Hinson officiated and interment was in FELTON CEMETERY. Pallbearers - Not copied.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Pauline Hinson Collins; two sons, Robert C. Collins of Montezuma and Paul White Collins of Atlanta; one daughter, Mrs. Charles N. Watson of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Robert C. Collins, Jr. and Ralph Lee Collins of Montezuma; Paula and Charles C. Watson of Atlanta; and a number of other relatives.

FRANCIS MARION CARSON

Francis M. Carson, 69, Passes After Short Illness.
Francis Marion Carson, 69, prominent resident of Reynolds and a member of the Macon County Board of Education for many years, passed away at a Macon hospital Friday afternoon after a short illness.
Mr. Carson was born in Macon County, son of the late Joseph Jefferson and Lula Clyde Ricks Carson, and had spent his entire life near Reynolds. He was a farmer and a steward in the Reynolds Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Annie May James of Reynolds; three brothers, James Ricks Carson and Charles F. Carson of Reynolds, and William Joseph Carson of Philadelphia, Penn.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Reynolds Methodist Church. The Rev. Virgil Culpepper officiated and burial was in the CARSON FAMILY CEMETERY in Macon County.
Goddard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Oglethorpe - JULIETA CHILDS - Services for Julieta Teresa Childs will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. Michaels Catholic Church with burial in LOCKWOOD CEMETERY in Ideal. Childs died Friday, February 4, 2000.
Born in the Philippines, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenny Childs; Children, Bill Childs of Fort Valley and Mary Ellen Peaster of Montezuma; brother, Leon Diputado of the Philippines, and three grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 7 tonight in Watson-Mathews Funeral Home and visitation will follow until 9 p.m.

Graveside Rites Friday For James J. Childs.
James J. Childs, 88 of Atlanta, died Wednesday, April 18, 1962, in Grady Hospital after a short illness. He had lived his entire life in Macon County until three years ago when he moved to Atlanta.
Survivors are five nieces, Mrs. M. B. Guy of Manchester, Mrs. H. E. Murray and Mrs. O. S. Edwards, both of Ellaville, Mrs. Marvin Athon of Montezuma, Miss Mona Childs of Sylvester; four nephews, W. G. Childs of Ideal, Dick Childs, of Montezuma, William Childs and Johnny Rodgers.
Graveside services were held Friday at MT. ZION CEMETERY with the Rev. H. H. Gregory officiating.
Smith-Tindol Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

[Note: I do NOT find a marked grave in "Cemeteries of Macon County" for James J. Childs AND, I am not sure if he is buried in MT. ZION BAPTIST CEMETERY. His wife's parents are buried there with at least 2 unmarked adult graves beside the mother.

Services for Mrs. Eunice W. Crook, 66, of Reynolds, who died in a Fort Valley hospital were held Friday at Taylor Mill Baptist Church in Reynolds.

  The Rev. Sydney Jones officiated.  Burial was in MT. OLIVE CEMETERY near Potterville [Taylor Co.] Ga.

  A native of Taylor County, Mrs. Crook was a member of the Taylor Mill Baptist Church.

  Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Hollis Stinson of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mrs. Joseph Harmon and Mrs. Jean Carpenter, both of Reynolds; one son, Sammy Crook of Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. Luttie Greer of Tifton; three brothers, J. W. Windham and Jake Windham, both of Reynolds and Leonard Windham of Fort Valley.

EARLY EUGENE COKER, 83, of Andersonville

Early E. Coker of Andersonville, Ga. passed away at a Montezuma Hospital Sunday night following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 14 in the chapel of Watson Mathews Funeral Home with the Rev. Leighton R. Norris of Americus officiating. Interment was in OGLETHORPE CEMETERY. Pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Coker. Mr. Coker, 83 years of age, was born in Webster County, having resided in the Cut-Off Community for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Baptist denomination. Survivors are one son, H. E. Coker of Campbellsville, Ky.; four daughters, Mrs. E. A. Staples of Palatka, Fla., Mrs. Fred Norris of Macon, Miss Sue Coker of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. W. C. Griggs, Jr. of Pinehurst; two brothers, Edgar Coker of Andersonville, Charlie Coker of Ft. Worth, Texas; one sister, Mrs. S. C. Pennington of Clearwater, Fla. several grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge. Final Rites November 10th At White Water For Henry J. Cromer
Funeral services for Henry J. Cromer, 89, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Dykes of Eastman, were held Thursday afternoon, November 10, in White Water Baptist Church.  Burial was in the KELLEY CEMETERY.
  A native of Macon County, Mr. Cromer passed away Monday after a week's illness.  He was a member of the White Water Baptist Church.
  Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Loraine Crawford of Carrollton, Mrs. Rachel M. Blake of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. J. A. Dykes and Mrs. Essie Shiver of Eastman, Route 5 and Miss Edna Cromer of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, Lewis Cromer of Macon, Chester Cromer of Cochran and Eddie Cromer of England; a sister, Mrs. Eula Barfield of Oglethorpe and three brothers, Frank Cromer of Oglethorpe, David Cromer of Macon and Vester Cromer of Vienna.

WILLIAM COATES, SR.

Wm. Coates, Sr., Passes Following Attack While Driving.

William Coates, Sr. of Andersonville died near Fort Valley Tuesday afternoon in an automobile wreck which happened after he apparently suffered an attack while driving, according to city police.

The accident occurred near the Peach County Hospital, inside the city limits of Fort Valley.

Officers said Mr. Coates fell over into his wife's lap while driving. She grabbed for the wheel, they said, and the car apparently turned over. Mrs. Coates was not, seriously injured, but was treated at Peach County Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of Mr. Coates' son, William B. Coates, Jr. from Lynchburg, Va. Reese Park Chapel, Americus will be in charge of arrangements.

HOWEVER, I do find: Mattie Owen, wife of William Coats [October 18, 1898 - May 5, 1945] "Mother", buried in Oglethorpe Cemetery.]

Mrs. Bea Chastain Passes In Atlanta.
Mrs. Beatrice Chastain of Montezuma, widow of the late W. L. Chastain, passed away early Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Justice in Atlanta, She had been in failing health for a number of years.
  Funeral arrangement will be announced by Smith-Tindol Funeral Service.

Final rites for Mrs. Beatrice C. Chastain, prominent Montezumian, were conducted from the First Baptist Church here Friday morning, July 1st.
  The Rev. C. G. Ward, pastor, officiated and burial was in FELTON'S CEMETERY.
  Pallbearers: Robert Justice, W. H. McKenzie, Jr. J. S. Croxton, Herbert McKenzie, E. K. Montfort and J. B. Easterlin, Jr.
  Mrs. Chastain passed away Wednesday at the home of her foster daughter, Mrs. Robert Justice, in Atlanta. She had made her home there for several months during her last illness.  She was 70 years old.
  A native Georgian, Mrs. Chastain was the daughter of the late McLary and Dora M. Chafin, and the widow of the late W. L. Chastain.  Until her recent sickness, she was an active member of the local Baptist Church.
  Survivors include one sister, Mrs. C. T. Carr of Montezuma; a abrother, Dorian B. Chafin of Hollywood, Calif., and three foster daughters, Mrs. Justice, Miss Bea Johnson and Miss Martha Paris, all of Atlanta.
  Smith Tindol Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Mrs. W. M. Coats.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, May 9, for Mrs. William M. Coats, whose death occurred suddenly at her residence in Andersonville early on the morning of May 5. Mrs. Coat's death, resulted from a heart attack.

Born in Holmes County, Fla. in 1898, the daughter of the late Kalop Owen and Lou Riley Webb Owen, both natives of Alabama, Mrs. Coats had made her home at the Andersonville National Cemetery for 23 years. She was an active member of the Andersonville Baptist Church and a member of the Harmony Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Montezuma, serving this organization as Marshall. She was the wife of William M. Coats.

Surviving her death are her husband; one son, Ensign William M. Coats, Jr., Naval Air Corps, Pacific; five sisters, Mrs. Albert K. Pridgen of Goldsboro, N.C.; Mrs. Albert McDade of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Mrs. Della Owen of Crestview, Fla.; Mrs. C. L. Trotman of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; and Mrs. Ben King, Portland, Fla.; four brothers, Frank Owen, William Owen, Edward Owen, all of Crestview, Fla. and Porter Owen of Holt, Fla.

Services were conducted from the Montezuma Funeral Home with the Rev. John D. Zeigler officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Evans of Americus. Interment was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.

CPL. RUSSELL CHAPMAN

Cpl. Russell Chapman Drowned March 4, Crossing River In France. [Picture with Obit]

Mrs. Russell Chapman of Ideal received a telegram from the War Department on Wednesday of last week informing her that her husband, Cpl. Russell Chapman, who was with the Engineers, was drowned at sea. A letter followed on Thursday stating that his death occurred while his unit was attempting to cross a river near Courville, France on March 4th.

Cpl.Chapman was inducted into the service in February 1943 and received three months basic training at Fort Eustis, Va., later being transferred to Hartford, Conn. where he trained with the 539th Anti-air-craft Battalion. On the first of August, 1944, he was sent to Camp Rucker, Ala. where he continued his training as a combat engineer. He embarked for overseas service from this camp in December 1944, landing off the coast from Le Harve. All of his letters were headed "Somewhere in France:. Corporal Chapman left his company and went to Paris on February 14 for a week. He joined them on the 22nd of February, his fourth wedding anniversary.

Cpl. Chapman was a member of the White Water Baptist Church and active in all church work. He married the former Miss Selma Kelley and has a two year old daughter, Linda. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Chapman of Ideal and he has one brother, Carvis Chapman of Thomaston.

OSCAR F. CHEEK

Funeral Held For Oscar F. Cheek Saturday Morning.

Oscar F. Cheek of the White Water Community died in Milledgeville Thursday night at 7 o'clock at the age of 72. He had been ill for many months and was taken to the hospital a week ago.

Mr. Cheek was very prominent in this part of the state as a promoter and director of singing conventions and served for several terms as president of the Macon County Singing Association. The annual convention of this association brings hundreds of people to Oglethorpe each year.

Mr. Cheek had been a resident of Macon County for twenty years. He was born in Jasper County, Georgia. Funeral services were held at PINE LEVEL METHODIST CHURCH Saturday morning at 11 o'clock with the Rev. David Kight, the Rev. J. L. McCord and the Rev. Carl Ayers officiating. Interment was in the PINE LEVEL CHURCH CEMETERY.

Surviving his death are three daughters, Mrs. W. G. Rodgers, Mrs. Homer Kelly of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Jesse Moore of Unadilla; one son, M. B. Cheek of Oglethorpe and Macon, one sister, Mrs. Albert Perdue of Orlando, Fla. and one brother, a twin, E. F. Cheek of Tifton.

JAMES B. CROMER

James B. Cromer Dies Sunday in Macon

Funeral services for James B. Cromer, 35, of 3917 Linwood Drive, who died unexpectedly in a Macon hospital Sunday, were held Tuesday at 4:30 pm in the Little Bethel Baptist Church in Ideal. Burial was in the LITTLE BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY.

A native of Ideal, Mr. Cromer was the son of Mrs. Annier Mae Brewer Cromer and the late Andrew Jackson Cromer. He attended the public schools of Ideal and had been a resident of Macon for the past eight years.

Mr. Cromer was a mechanic having been employed by Dunlap Chevrolet Co. He was a member of the Little Bethel Baptist Church and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Helen Blum; one son, James Ronald Cromer of Macon; mother, Mrs. Annie Mae Cromer of Ideal; one brother, Jackson Cromer of Ideal; one sister, Mrs. Louise Faulk of Ideal; grandmother, Mrs. T. R. Brewer of Macon and several aunts and uncles.

JOHN HENRY COLLUM

J. H. Collum, 47, Dies At Americus.

Americus, Ga. Funeral services were held at 4 pm Wednesday from Reese Park Chapel, Americus, for John Henry Collum, 47, S. Dudley Street with the Rev. J. W. Hartley of Cordele, and the Rev. Perry Stone of Americus officiating. Interment was in RED HILL CEMETERY in Macon County.

Mr. Collum died at the Americus and Sumter County Hospital Tuesday.

He is survived by his wife, the former Emma English of Americus, one daughter, Mrs. Bobby Usry of Richland; one son, Mike Collum of Americus; his mother; Mrs. J. L. Collum of Americus; two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Harbuck and Mrs. Bob Robinson, both of Americus; two grandchildren also survive.

SIMEON B. DUKE

S. B. Duke Dies Tuesday; Buried At Red Hill

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 for Simeon B. Duke, 73, of the Englishville District, who died at his home Tuesday, January 4, at 6 pm following a stroke of paralysis suffered several days before.

The services were held at the Andersonville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Evans of Americus and the Rev. Buchanan of New Era, officiating. Interment was at the RED HILL CHURCHYARD CEMETERY.

Mr. Duke had lived in Macon County most of his life, but was born in Schley County. His wife was the former Miss Nannie Davis, and his parents, who were Macon County pioneers, were J. J. and Missouri Lee Duke.

This is the third death in this immediate family in the past month, the others being Mr. Duke's sister, Mrs. Charles A. Head, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Charles Aycock.

Surviving his death are his wife, Mrs. S. B. Duke, two daughters, Mrs. G. W. McLendon and Mrs. G. W. Johnson, one son Joe Duke; one brother, Robert Duke of Arizona; and six sisters, Mrs. J. W. Aycoco of Andersonville; Mrs. W. M. Johnson of Oglethorpe, Mrs. Mary Edge of Cordele; Mrs. W. H. Grantham of Thomaston; Mrs. H. Y. Carson of Birmingham and Mrs. C. Q. Rutland of Seville.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Montezuma Funeral Home.

MRS. JOHN NATHANIEL [Annie Calhoun Walton ] CHILDS

Mrs. Annie W. Childs Buried In Ideal; Died Wednesday.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 3:30 for Mrs. Annie Walton Childs of Ideal, who died at her residence Wednesday evening at 7:00. She had been a resident of Ideal for 31 years and was born 73 years ago in Appleton, S.C.

Her husband, who preceded her in death, was Dr. John N. Childs and survivors are: one daughter, Miss Edna/Elma Childs; three sons, Earl Blanton Childs and Millard Geddings Childs of Ideal and Sam C. Childs of Fitzgerald.

The services took place at the Ideal Methodist Church with interment in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY. The Montezuma Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Avotra C. Culpepper

MONTEZUMA -- Graveside services for Avotora C. Culpepper, 80, of 522 N. Dooly St., were scheduled for 2 p. m. today at Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Gregg officiating.
     A native of Laurens County, Mr. Culpepper lived in Macon County for the past 41 years. He was a retired Independent Life Insurance Co. employee and a former magistrate court judge. Mr. Culpepper was a member of Life Underwriters Association and the First Baptist Church. He died Sunday at an Americus hospital.
     Survivors include his wife, Woodrow Burch Culpepper of Montezuma; two sons, Jams A. Culpepper and Michael L. Culpepper, both of Montezuma; a sister, Eutha Coleman of Cadwell; and two grandchildren.
     Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma had charge of the arrangements.
