 THOMAS   LESLIE   COOGLE

 Thomas Leslie Coogle, 78, a member of the Georgia General Assembly from 1946 to 1954, died Friday, February 20, 1976 in a local hospital.

 Officiating ministers were Pastor Lingle, Pastor Burns and Rev. Roy Gardner.

 Mr. Coogle, a native of Macon County , was also a former Macon County Commissioner.  He was a farmer and a warehouseman and was also in the cotton ginning and pulpwood business.  He was a member of Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church. 

Services were held Saturday in Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church with burial in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY .

 Survivors include his wife, Laura Morgan Coogle of Oglethorpe; four sons, Thomas Joseph Coogle, Edward Curtis Coogle and George Herbert Coogle, all of Oglethorpe and Robert Leo Coogle of Montezuma; a daughter, Mrs. Chesley Gilmore of Oglethorpe; 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge.

 VIRGIL  R.  CARTER

 Virgil R. Carter, a 56 year old resident of Americus ,   Georgia , passed away at his home on Thursday, January 8, of an apparent heart attack.  Born in Rockingham ,   Ga. ,  he had lived in Macon County for 26 years before moving to Americus approximately two years ago.  He was a disabled veteran of World War II and was employed with the Georgia Department of Labor.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Montezuma.

 Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jency Giles Carter of Montezuma; two sons, Cary M. Carter and Kim T. Carter of Americus ; four daughters, Miss Jency Carter of Valdosta ; Mrs. Bill Michel of Mays Landing, New Jersey ; Mrs. Alex Dasher of St. Simons Island, Ga.; Miss Charm Carter of Montezuma; one brother, Marlow Carter of Clarkesville, Va., three sisters, Mrs.  Jim Stroud of Greenville , South Carolina ; Mrs. Myrl C. Robb of Columbia , S.C and Mrs. Mildred Hanson of Springfield , Mass; two grandchildren.

 Funeral services for Mr. Carter were held Monday, January 12, at the Watson-Mathews Funeral Home with interment at the ANDERSONVILLE NATIONAL CEMETERY .  Officiating ministers were Rev. Ken Bush and Rev. Clarence Keene.

Citizens & Georgian – Montezuma , Ga.   December 3, 1975

 WALTER  B.  COLLIER

 Oglethorpe – Walter B. Collier, 73, died Monday, November 24, 1975 in a Montezuma nursing home.  Services were held Wednesday in Shiloh Baptist Church .  Burial was in OGLETHORPE CEMETERY .

 Rev. George Jones and Rev . Cham White officiated.  Pallbearers were N. G. Webb, James M. Clark, Clarence Holmes, Billy Barfield, Floyd E. Yoder and Robert Ray.

 Mr. Collier, a native of Clay County, Ala., had lived in Macon County 51 years.  He was a retired carpenter and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church .

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Abbiegail Lamberth Collier of Oglethorpe; two sons, Lawrence Adrin Collier of Oglethorpe and Wilford Larue Collier of Centerville ; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Power of Atlanta ; a brother, William O. Collier of Montezuma; two sisters, Mrs. Archie Barfield of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Artie Howell of Fort Valley , who died the following day.

 Watson-Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma had charge of arrangements.

MRS.        LANGDON    C.     [Sylvia  Lucille  Underwood]     CHEVES  

Mrs. Sylvia Lucille Underwood  Cheves, 76, of Montezuma, died June 5, 1989 in the Macon County Medical Center .

 Services were held June 7, at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Gregg and Rev. Paul Brill officiating.    Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY .

 he was a lifetime resident of Macon County , a homemaker, member of the First Baptist Church and the wife of the late Dr. Langdon C. Cheves, Jr.

 She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Cheves Harp of Reynolds and Mrs. Karen Cheves Kanazawa of Norcross; brother, Rev. Tilden M. Underwood of Monroe; sister, Mrs. Joyce Underwood  Baldwin of Montezuma; six grandchildren; and several other relatives.

 Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 MRS.   GODFREY   THORNTON “Dick”  [Ora Mae Hardage]  CHILDS

 Montezuma – Ora Mae Hardage Childs, 82, of 300 E. Railroad St. died Saturday in a Marshallville Nursing Home.  Born in Upson County , she was the daughter of the late Zack A. and Alma Ellington Hardage.  She was a homemaker, was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Godfrey T. Childs.

 Survivors:  son, Godfrey T. Childs, Jr. of Rome; brothers and sister, Fred M. Hardage and Sarah Cranford, both of Smyrna and Harvey Hardage of Dayton, Ohio; and a grandchild.

 Services, Monday in First Baptist Church in Montezuma with burial in IDEAL CITY CEMETERY .  The Rev. Randy Gregg will officiate.  Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma has charge of arrangements.

 Montezuma – Godfrey T. “Dick” Childs, 77, of 300 E. Railroad St., died Friday in a local hospital.  He was a retired Macon County work camp guard.

 Services will be held today in IDEAL CITY CEMETERY .  The Rev. Guy Sayles will officiate.

 A lifelong resident of Macon County , Mr. Childs was a member of First Baptist Church in Montezuma and was a World War II Army Veteran.

 Survivors include his wife, Ora Mae Childs of Montezuma; a son, Godfrey T. Childs, Jr. of Rome ; a sister, Ruby Childs Athon of Montezuma; and a grandchild

 MRS.     ARTHUR     H.   [Minnie    Hill]       CLEMENS

 Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Hill Clemens, 62, who died Tuesday night, August 30, at the Houston County Hospital , were held Thursday at the Warner Robins First Baptist Church .  Burial followed in MAGNOLIA    PARK    CEMETERY in Warner Robins .

 Mrs. Clemens was born in Ball Ground and moved to Warner Robins four years ago from Byromville.  She was a member of the Warner Robins First Baptist Church .

 Survivors are her husband, Arthur H. Clemens; one daughter, Mrs. Robert L. Leavens of Savannah; three sisters, Mrs. T. L. Peterman and Mrs. John Murphy, both of Byromville, and Mrs. Thomas  [Thelma Hill] Joiner of Montezuma; two brothers, L. E. Hill of Montezuma and Dr. C. W. Hill of Atlanta; one grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Christopher Funeral Home of Warner Robins was in charge of arrangements.


MRS.    RICHARD    W.    [Mattie   Charles ]       CANNON

 Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Charles Cannon, 73, who died Wednesday morning at her residence in Birmingham , Ala. , were held Friday at the graveside in FELTON CEMETERY in Montezuma.

 The Rev. Melvin York and the Rev. W. H. Martin officiated.

 A native of Montezuma, Mrs. Cannon had moved to Birmingham in 1944.

 Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ernest J. Brand of Birmingham , and Mrs. Russell Alford, Sr. of Russellville , Ala. ; two sons, R. C. Cannon of Birmingham and Gerald L. Cannon of Auburndale, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mable Phillips of Oglethorpe and a cousin, Harold Collins of Montezuma,

 Smith-Tindol Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

 [Note: Mattie C. Cannon – Born August 31,  1886 – Died August 3, 1960 is buried in Felton Cemetery beside Richard W. Cannon [ June 16, 1878 – Sept. 3, 1956]  and Nettie Claire, wife of Richard W. Cannon [March 31, 1884 – Sept. 13, 1907]

It appears that Mattie Charles Cannon is the 2nd wife of Richard W. Cannon, although I have no proof available.]
