MRS. CARTER [Evelyn Brown] HILL

Mrs. Evelyn Brown Hill died Tuesday, July 11, 1972 at Mobile, Alabama where she had been living with a daughter since December 1971.
Mrs. Hill, widow of the late Carter Hill, was 69 hears old and was born and reared in Clay County, Alabama, but had resided here for several years. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral service for Mrs. Hill was held Thursday, July 13, at the Montezuma Methodist Church, with the Rev. C. G. Ward officiating. Burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY.
Surviving Mrs. Hill are two daughters, Mrs. Doris Murray of Mobile, Alabama and Mrs. Edward Smith of Hartwell, Georgia. One brother. W. K. Brown of Byromville; two granddaughters, Jean and Rue Murray of Mobile; two grandsons, Bill and Bob Smith of Hartwell, Ga.

ARTHUR CLYDE HILL

Funeral services for Arthur Clyde Hill, age 76, of Oglethorpe were held at 3 PM Sunday in the chapel of Goddard Funeral Home in Reynolds. Rev. Sidney Jones and Rev. Ralph Beckwith officiated and burial followed in PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY near Reynolds
Serving as pallbearers were: Cleveland Harp, E. L. Simmons, E. C. Raburn, Jr., Carl Rodgers, Laurance Simmons, Howard Hortman, Madison Lowe and G. C. Hobbs. Forming an honorary escort were Morris Slaton, Earl Jones, Wheeler Smith, Robert Lowe and Brown Perry.
Mr. Hill was a native of Macon County and had lived here all his life. Her was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his widow, Edna Hartley Hill of Oglethorpe; four sons, Melvin Hill, Ernie Hill, Charles Hill and Howard Hill, all of Oglethorpe, two daughters, Mrs. George Cook of Reynolds and Mrs. Bill Moye of Macon; two brothers, Monroe Hill and Cleve Hill, both of Oglethorpe.
Goddard Funeral Home of Reynolds was in charge of arrangements.

ARCHIE CLINTON HILL

Mr. Archie Clinton Hill, 75, of Oglethorpe, Georgia, died Thursday, May 21, 1987, in the Macon County Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 3 PM Friday, May 22, in the Oglethorpe Baptist Church. The Rev. Bill Givens officiated and burial was in OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL GARDENS CEMETERY.
Mr. Hill was born in Taylor County, February 21, 1912, the son of Albert O. Hill and Nina shirah Hill. He lived in Macon County most of his life and was a member of the Oglethorpe Baptist Church. He was a retired Chief of Police with Oglethorpe Police Department and a member of the Georgia Peach Officers Association.
Survivors are his wife, Eva Jewell Tarrer Hill of Oglethorpe, a grandson, Virgil Carl Cameron, a great-grandson, Aaron Cameron, a son-in-law, Virgil "Pete" Cameron, all of Fitzgerald, a nephew, Ralph Cox of Kingsport, Tennessee.
Pallbearers were, David Tarrer, Ronald Tarrer, Tony Tarrer, Joel Wood, Harold fowler and Morris Stafford.
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

KELLEY LYNN HUNTER

 

Kelley Lynn Hunter, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hunter, Jr. of Albany, died Saturday, December 7, 1963 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.

 

Graveside services were held in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY Sunday, December 8. Rev. Lewis Strickland Officiated.

 

Survivors other than her parents are three brothers, Dale Hunter, Charles Hunter and Ben Hunter of Albany; material grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Heath, Jr. of Ellaville; paternal grandfather, W. E. Hunter, Sr. of Oglethorpe and Paternal Grandmother, Mrs. Julia B. Hunter of Macon.

 

The Baby’s mother is the former Frances Heath of Ellaville.

 

Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Richardson H. Hurdle, 86, died Saturday, July 11, 1987 in Houston Texas.
Mr. Hurdle, a native of Montezuma, had resided in Houston for the past sixty years.
Services were held Monday in HOUSTON, TEXAS. Dr. W. H. Hurdle officiated.
Survivors include a brother,
J. H. Hurdle of Montezuma and a sister, Mrs. Mary Bankston of Flovilla, Ga.

MISS GLADYS HICKS

Miss Gladys Hicks, 92, of Montezuma, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 12, 1987, in Houston Medical Center,
Warner Robins, Georgia. Funeral services were held at 11 AM Friday, August 14, in the chapel of
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY with the Rev. Freddie Wheeler officiating.
Miss Hicks was born in Macon County, where she lived all of her life, on July 2, 1895, a daughter of
Daniel Morgan Hicks and Lenora Childs Hicks. She was a retired school teacher and a member of the
Montezuma United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Montezuma Music Lovers
Club and the Montezuma Garden Club.
Survivors are, a sister, Miss Annie Mae Hicks of Montezuma, a nephew, Daniel Morgan Hicks, III of Ninety Six, S.C.,
three nieces, Mrs. George Brady of Reynolds, Ga., Mrs. J. P. Cunnyngham of Daytona Beach, Florida
Miss Ruth Hicks of Royston, a sister-in-law Mrs. Brown Hicks of Royston.
Pallbearers were Greg Hicks, John Hicks, Jimmy Maffett, John Cunnyngham, Watt Brown,
Hicks Queener, David Childs, John Childs.

MRS.   JAMES   LEON   [Pearl  Perry]  HARRISON

 

  Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Perry Harrison, age 95, of Montezuma, Georgia were held at 11 am Saturday, March 24, 1984, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home.  The Rev. Larry C. Cosper and the Rev. Bill Deakins officiated.  Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY.  Mrs. Harrison, a life long resident of Macon County, died Thursday, March 22, in the Macon County Medical Center.

  She was born September 1, 1888, the daughter of Charles M. Perry and Anne Mott Perry, and was the wife of the late J. L. Harrison.  She was a homemaker and the oldest member of the Montezuma First Baptist Church.

  Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Florence P. Johnson of Montezuma; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Laura Perry of Tifton; four nieces, Mrs. Kate Woods of Atlanta, Mrs. Jack Fokes of Montezuma, Mrs. Anne Hughes of Bellaire, Ohio, Mrs. Anne Bentley of Fort Valley; three nephews, Marvin Green and Judson Green, both of Decatur, Sam Perry of Moultrie.

 WINSTON   CECIL   HOLMES

   Funeral services for Winston Cecil Holmes, 69, of Montezuma, Georgia, were held at 2 pm Tuesday, December 24, 1985, in the Montezuma First Baptist Church.  Mr. Holmes died Sunday, December 22, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.  The Rev. Guy G. Sayles, Jr. officiated and burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY.

  Mr. Holmes was born in Macon County, where he lived all of his life, a son of Winston Aubrey Holmes and Bessie Saxon Holmes.  He was a member of Montezuma Baptist Church, a retired farmer and retired employee of the State Department of Transportation.  He was a former Macon County Commissioner, 1951 - 1958, and the former owner and operator of Macon County Cleaners.  He was a member of TGravelers Rest Masonic Lodge # 65 and a member of Al Sihah Shrine Temple.  During World War II, he served in the Army Corps and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.

  Survivors are his wife, Nancy Daniels Holmes; a daughter, Mrs. Joe Norman of Tampa, Florida; two step daughters, Mrs. Joe Griffin and Mrs. Stacy Smith, both of Valdosta; two sisters, Mrs. Wilbur Nelson of Montezuma, Mrs. Melvin Dassinger of Prattsville, Alabama; two grandsons, Trey and Andy Norman of Tampa, Florida.

John Huffman, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Huffman, was born in Lexington County, South Carolina, January 12, 1812; died in Macon County, Georgia, January 8th, 1878.  He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.  He leaves a wife and four children.  S. T. Cardell.

MRS. EMMETT BLACKSHEAR [Elizabeth Lizzie Lewis] HAMILTON

Funeral services for Mrs. E. B. Hamilton, Sr., were conducted at Montezuma Methodist Church
Sunday afternoon, October 23, 1960.

The Rev. C. C. Edmondson, Rev. C. C. Ward and Rev. W. S. Johnson officiated, and burial followed in
FELTON CEMETERY.

Nephews of the deceased serving as pallbearers were:
L. D. Hansford, C. P. Netherton, J. L. Oliver, W. L. Oliver, Sr.,
W. L. Oliver, Jr., J. D. Hamilton, Jack Hamilton and Harold Youmans.

Watson Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hamilton, 85 year old resident of Montezuma, passed away October 21 after an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of this city, and a member of Montezuma Methodist Church. She was very active in the church choir and Missionary Society until recent years. Her husband was the late E. B. Hamilton, Sr., who passed away in 1951.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Guerry of Montezuma; three sons, Lewis A. Hamilton of Atlanta; Charles R. Hamilton of Oakland, Calif.; and E. B. Hamilton, Jr. of Tifton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

BERNICE MAE HAMMOCK

Funeral services for Miss Bernice Mae Hammock, 60, held Tuesday in St. John's Lutheran Church in Oglethorpe, Rev. W. H. Martin officiated and burial followed in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.

Miss Hammock died Monday at a Montezuma hospital after a short illness. She was a lifelong resident of Macon County and was a member of the St. John's Church

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Coleman Joiner of Montezuma, Mrs. Tom Green and Miss Daisy Hammock, both of Oglethorpe; two brothers, Lyman Hammock and J. Robert Hammock, both of Oglethorpe; a number of nieces and nephews.

MRS. WILLIAM S. [Ada Beatrice McKinnon] HAM, 91
Mrs. Ada Beatrice McKinnon Ham of Montezuma passed away at a local nursing home late Monday evening, August 9, 1971. She was 91 years of age. Mrs. Ham, was the widow of William S. Ham and a native of Macon County for 60 years, moving here from Alexander City, Alabama. She was a member of the Montezuma Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held from the Montezuma United Methodist Church Wednesday with Rev. R. O. Edenfield and Rev. Kenneth Bush officiating. Interment followed in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY. Serving as pallbearers were her grandsons, Bobby, Terry, Mack, Tommy, Harold and Billy Ham and Billy Davis.
She is survived by three sons, Mack Ham, Parks Ham and Thomas Ham, all of Montezuma; four daughters, Mrs. T. Z. Swift of Sparta, Mrs. W. H. Davis of Sylvester, Mrs. J. W. Waters of Reynolds and Mrs. John Wood of Norfolk, Ga.; a brother, Mason McKinnon of Montezuma; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

ALLEN J. HEAD, SR.

Services for Allen J. Head, Sr., 67, of Andersonville, who died Wednesday morning, April 9th, in a Montezuma hospital after a brief illness, were held Thursday, April 10th in the Oglethorpe Baptist Church.
The Rev. Richard Gardner and the The Rev. Carl Ayers officiated with burial in the OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL GARDENS CEMETERY.
Mr. Head was a native of Macon County and was a retired farmer. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Oglethorpe Lions Club.
Active pallbearers were Spec Grace, Jr., Mike Head, Jack Head, Harmon Head, Jr., Steve Head, Winston Lamberth, Charles Head and Jerry Head.
A number of friends of the deceased served as honorary pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ilene Murphy Head of Andersonville; three sons, Allen J. Head, Jr. of Cordele, Harmon W. Head of Andersonville and Murphy E. Head of Vienna; two daughters, Mrs. John A. Trask of Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and Mrs. C. E. Grace of Oglethorpe; three brothers, Harry Head of Americus, Charles Head of Hawkinsville, and Russell Head of Cordele; a sister, Mrs. John Kable of Atlanta.

MRS. WILLIAM COLON [Rena Bell Westbrook] HICKS


Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25th for Mrs. Rena Westbrook Hicks of Montezuma, who passed away March 24th at a local hospital. Services were held from the residence of Mrs. Cecil Queener in Montezuma. The Rev. Emory Gilbert officiated, and burial was in FELTON CEMETERY.
The widow of William Colon Hicks, she was 90 years of age, a lifelong resident of Macon County and a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers were Dr. Tom Adams, Dr. Fred Adams, J. S. Croxton, W. T. Hall, Lawton Cater and Jack Haugabook.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Cecil Queener of Montezuma; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Coley Hicks of Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. Mary Westbrook Cantrell of Lake City, Fla.; two grandsons, Sam Queener of Montezuma and Billy Hicks of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Mrs. Felton McCrary of Savannah and Mrs. John Dixon of Brattleboro, Vermont and 11 [great] grandchildren.

MRS. BESS FREDERICK HEFLIN
Mrs. Bess Frederick Heflin, mother of Charles Garr Heflin of Montezuma, died Tuesday, August  29, in a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after a long illness.
Long active in social and civic affairs, Mrs. Heflin was the widow of John J. Heflin, widely known Memphis banker. She was a past president of Dilletantes and member of the board of the Hospital for Crippled Adults. A member of a distinguished Georgia family, she was born in Marshallville, Ga., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felder John Frederick, and moved to Memphis with her husband and family in 1918.
She leaves three sons, John J. Heflin, Jr. of Memphis, Lt. Col. Felder F. Heflin of Washington, D. C. and charles G. Heflin of Montezuma; a brother Sinclair A. Frederick of Fort Valley; a sister, Mrs. Walter T. Forbes of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Marshallville, and two grandchildren.

WALTER JOE HOBBS

Funeral services for Mr. Walter Joe Hobbs, age 63, of Macon, Ga. were held at 3:00 pm Thursday, October 11, 1984 in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Mr. Hobbs died Wednesday, October 10, at his residence. Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY, Montezuma, Ga. with Rev. Gene Wilson and Pastor John Lingle officiating.
Mr. Hobbs was born September 15, 1921 in Macon County, the son of the late G. C. Hobbs, Sr. and Della Frances Bivins Hobbs. He was a retired former partner with Flint Gas Company, a Mason and a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the V. F. W. and the American Legion.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his former wife, Mrs. Helen Grant Hobbs of Valdosta; a son, Walter Joe Hobbs, Jr. of Valdosta; two daughters, Miss Paula Hobbs of Valdosta and Mrs. Andrea Anker of Riverside, Conn.; a brother, G. C. Hobbs, Jr. of Reynolds; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Bearden and Mrs. Virginia Hammock, both of Oglethorpe, Mrs. Louise Hooks of Marshallville, one granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Wade Bearden, Dudley Hammock, Johnny Hammock, Bennie Hobbs, Louis Hobbs, and Grover C. Hobbs, III.

  A native of Georgia, she was a member of the Montezuma Methodist Church, and a retired school teacher.

Mr. Theodore Chester Hammond, age 87, of Marshallville, Ga. died Tuesday, October 9, 1984 in The Oaks Nursing Home. Graveside services were held at 4 pm Wednesday, October 10, in MARSHALLVILLE CEMETERY. The Rev. Ray Adams officiated.
Mr. Hammond, a native of Defiance, Ohio, lived in Marshallville since 1942. He was a retired rural letter carrier, a member of Marshallville United Methodist Church and an Army Veteran of World War I. He was a Mason, a member of Al Sihah Temple, the American Legion and the V.F.W.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Gonda Elizabeth Gares Hammond of Marshallville; one daughter, Mrs. Theodora H. Nassamer of Warner Robins.

Christine P. ":Tine" Hurtt, 76, of Montezuma, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2004. Funeral services were held Friday, January 23, at 3 pm in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Burial followed in the BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY.
Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Brown Peaster and Leila Mae Wright Peaster. She was a retired seamstress from Forrest Textile Mill. She attended the Church of God of Prophecy.
She is survived by her husband: Clabourn Hurtt of Montezuma; children: Dale Peaster of Americus and David Peaster of Branton, Kentucky; brother: James L. Peaster of Montezuma; sister Betty Jean Peaster Salter of Americus; grandchildren: Jimmy David Peaster, Tabatha Peaster, Ansleigh Peaster, and Justin Peaster.

MRS. RALPH [Helen Iris Hambrick ] HARDEN
Helen Iris Hambrick Harden, 87, of Andersonville, passed away Thursday January 27, 2000. Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, at 2 pm in the Andersonville Baptist Church. Burial followed in the OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL GARDENS. Rev. Earl Dunmon officiated.
Born in Dooly County, she was the daughter of the late W. W. Hambrick and Annie Forte Woodruff Hambrick. She was the widow of the late Ralph Harden. She was a retired case worker for the Department of Family and Children Services. She was a member of the Andersonville Baptist Church.

Hill, Caleb F.
 Co. A, 10th Batt'n Georgia Volunteer Infantry Sorrel's Brigade,
 Mahone's Division, A. P. Hill's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia; organized March 17, 1862, and mustered into Confederate service March 18, 1862, for three years or the war.

 Caleb F. Hill enlisted March 4, 1862 in Oglethorpe, Macon Co., GA for
 3 years or the war.

 Caleb F. Hill was a Lieutenant from March of 1862 and Present on the Rosters through June 2, 1864. He was promoted to Captain on June 2, 1864.

 The Inspection report for August 12, 1864 shows Caleb Hill as being in  the
hospital in Richmond VA and on August 15, 1864 he is shown as being ill for
7 weeks with Chronic Dysentery. His records show he was admitted to General Hospital #4 in Richmond VA, August 9, 1864 and was Furloughed August 20, 1864 for the term of 30 days. It appears that he was present at Lee's surrender in 1865 and was paroled at that time.

 Included in these records are several requisitions for clothing and supplies for the men under his command.

 Caleb F. Hill and his wife Martha Bryan Hill (sister of William  Washington Bryan and daughter of Magruder Bryan) are buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Turner Co., Ga. [I have a photo of their headstone]

CHARLIE HERBERT HOGG

Mr. Charlie Herbert Hogg, 90, of Oglethorpe, Georgia, passed away Thursday morning, July 22, 2004. Funeral services were held at 11 am on Saturday, July 24, at Pine Level United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the PINE LEVEL CEMETERY. Rev. Joy Wilson officiated.
Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late James Walter Hogg and Mamie Aldridge Hogg. He was a self-employed truck driver and a member of Pine Level United Methodist church.
Survivors include a brother; Thomas Claude Hogg of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; nephews: Charles Hogg of Oglethorpe, James Hogg of Marshallville, and Robert P. Hogg of Albany; and nieces: Lee Thompson of Sylvania and Jean Caprio of Fort Lauderdale.

Mrs. Lillian Inez Massey Hill, 81, of 704 Rawls Street, Montezuma, Georgia died Monday, May 6, 1991 in Flint River Community Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 4:30 pm Tuesday, May 7, in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY. The Rev. Sidney Clay and Dr. Randy Gregg officiated.
Mrs. Hill, born October 14, 1909, in Sylvester, Georgia, was the daughter of William Thomas Massey and Dena Davis Massey. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She had resided in Macon County for the past sixty five years.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Rhunell Trussell of Montezuma; a son, Morgan Clovis Hill, Jr. of Lakewood, California, a sister, Mrs. Eva Mae Massey Stafford of Montezuma; five grandchildren, Mrs. Debbie Key, Walter Joe Trussell, Jr., James David Trussell, William Thomas Hill, Sarah Elizabeth Hill and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 2, 1980 at 11 am at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for Mrs. Marie Brown Horman, age 71, who died on Sunday, August 31, at the Oak Manor Nursing Home in Columbus. Rev. Ralph Beckwith, Rev. Sidney Jones and Rev. Donald Brett officiated and burial was in the PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY.
Mrs. Hortman was a life long resident of Macon County, and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was rertired from the Montezuma Knitting Mill.
Survivors are her husband, Mr. Howard Hortman of Oglethorpe; two sons, Mr. Wayne Hortman and Mr. Brown Hortman, both of Oglethorpe; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Gilbert of Columbus; five sisters, Mrs. Woodroe Hulett and Mrs. Edwin Jackson, both of Macon, Mrs. Leonard Whitley and Mrs. Olean Darvy, both of Columbus, and Mrs. Stanley Baran of Charleston, S.C.; ten grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Mrs. Lyda Rawls Hogg, 105, of 7045 Evergreen Woods Terrace, Springhill, Florida, formerly of Montezuma, Georgia, died Wednesday, May 20, 1992, in a local nursing home.
Graveside services were held Saturday at 11:00 am in FELTON CEMETERY, Montezuma, Georgia with the Rev. Harvey Sullins officiating.
Mrs. Hogg, a native of Decatur, Georgia, was born May 13, 1887, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rawls. She was a homemaker, a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and had resided in Florida for the past twenty years. She was the wife of the late Solomon Frank Hogg.
Survivors are, two daughters, Janette Santoro and Bessie Shaner, both of Springhill, Florida, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren.

 The funeral for John H. Hill, Jr., of 202 South Pleasant Hill
 Road, who died last Sunday at the Macon Hospital, was held Tuesday in
 the Warner Robins First Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold L. Moore
 officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Park Cemetery (Warner Robins, GA).
 Hill, a native of Winder, had lived in Warner Robins for 23 year,
 coming from Montezuma. He was a graduate of Montezuma High School and
 was employed in technical services of aircraft maintenance at Robins.
 He was a member of Tyrian Lodge III and was a disabled World WAr II
 veteran.
 He was a member of the Warner Robins First Baptist Church.....

 Little League, Babe Ruth League and the Connie Mack League....(goes on

William Timothy Hall, age 76, of Montezuma, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 1983 in the Americus Sumter County Hospital.
Mr. Hall was born June 18, 1907 in Barney, Ga. and was a retired pharmacist and former owner and operator of Montezuma Drug Co. for approximately 50 years. He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, a member of the Baracca sunday School Class and Montezuma Kiwanis Club. He was the son of William N. and Della Byrd Hall.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 11:00 am at Montezuma United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Mason officiating. Burial was at 4:00 pm in PENFIELD CEMETERY in Greensboro, Ga.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lila Boswell Hall of Montezuma, Ga.; one brother, John Hall of Jacksonville, Fl.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Paul T. Stone of Montgomery, Ala., Mrs. Lewis Kent of St. Peteersburg, Fla. and Miss Stella Hall of Boston, Ga.; a number of nieces and nephews.

James Benjamin "Benny" Hobbs, 57, of Reynolds died.
Suneral services were Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at 11 am in the Chapel of Goddard Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Barlow and Bruce Goddard officiating. Burial followed in PINE LEVEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY in Macon County.
He was a lifelong resident of Macon County and was employed with Flint Energies for the past 38 years. He was a member of Pine Level United Methodist Church.
He is survived by three sons, Chris Hobbs of California, Clint Hobbs of Oglethorpe and James O'Neal of North Carolina; a daughter, Tara Hobbs of Cochran; four brothers, Barney Hobbs, Donnie Hobbs, Ronnie Hobbs and Ricky Hobbs, all of Reynolds; four sisters, Irene Goree of Riverdale, Barbara Skipper of Montezuma, Margie Hobbs of Stone Mountain and Janice Poole of Idea;, an aunt, Ray Stafford of Montezuma, an uncle, Jack Hobbs of Reynolds; five grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Henry Swain Hortman, Jr., 49, of Ideal, died November 16, 1994 in an Atlanta hospital.
Services were held Nov. 19, at LITTLE BETHEL FREEWILL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY at 11 a.m.
He was a native of Taylor County and had lived in Ideal for the past year. He was the owner and operator of Reynolds Service Station and a former employee of Wanderlodge in Fort Valley. He was a member of Little Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Raburn Hormman of Ideal; two sons, Brad Hortman of Reynolds and Cliff Hortman of Ideal; two brothers, Gene Hortman and Will Hortman of Reynolds; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Hill, a native of Sumter County, was a retired nurse anesthetist from Grady Hospital in Atlanta. She was a Pink Lady at Houston Medical Center and a hospice volunteer. She was a member of the Sandy Valley Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Guy Hill and Annie Lucille Allmon.
Survivors include her halfsister, Lola Roberson of Thomaston and her aunts and uncles, Dollita Keller of Mathews, N.C., Willa Roberts of Thomaston, Mr. and Mrs. M.G. Allmon of Butler and Mr. and Mrs. L.A.

Mr. Hair, a native of Augusta, Ga., was born January 31, 1892, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wheldon Hair. He ws a resident of Montezuma for the past 43 years, a retired feed salesman and florist and a member of The First Baptist Church of Montezuma. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies.

She is survived by her children, G. C. Hill, Jr. of Reynolds, Tommy Hill of Ellaville, Frank Hill of Reynolds, Eddie Hill of Oglethorpe, Sara Griffin of Andersonville, Betty Jean Griffin of Reynolds, Susan Hill of Albany, eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Visitation: 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Howard Hill, 69, a former resident of Montezuma, died Monday in a Cordele Hospital. He was the son of the late Dow Hill of this city and Mrs. Mattie Hill, who has made her home with a daughter in Waynesboro for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife [not named], Mother [named above], two daughters, Mrs. Martha Spanton of Macon and Mrs. Florence Bullis of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, J. Seymour Hill of Montezuma; two sisters, Mrs. O. E. Tebow of Waynesboro, and Mrs. Guy Huthnance of Birmingham, Ala. and four grandchildren.

Final Rites Held This Morning For Mrs. B. J. Hamm, 74.
Mrs. Minnie P. Hamm, 74 year old resident of Spalding Street, Montezuma, died Wednesday in a local hospital after an illness of several years.
A native of Laurens County, Mrs. Hamm moved here from Ocilla about thirty years ago. She was a member of the Montezuma Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, B. J. Hamm of Montezuma; two daughters, Miss Alice Hamm and Mrs. J. P. Joyce, both of Montezuma; three sisters, Mrs. Albert Benson, Mrs. Mose Benson and Mrs. Ida Boatwright, all of Ocilla; two brothers, William Padgett and Bernard Padgett of Fitzgerald; one grandson, Willie Payne, Jr. of Montezuma.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 o'clock this morning [Thursday] from the chapel of Smith-Harris Funeral Home. The Rev. C. P. Russell officiated and burial followed in the OCILLA CEMETERY.

Final Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs. Corene M. Head.
Mrs. Corene Mann Head, 49, died Sunday afternoon in the Americus and Sumter County Hospital following an extended illness.
The daughter of Mrs. W. D. Brown of Montezuma and the late Mr. Brown, she was reared in Macon County and was a member of the Montezuma Methodist Church.
Other survivors include her [2nd] husband, R. T. Head of Montezuma; one son, Billy Mann of Montezuma; three sisters, Mrs. W. E. Dye, Sr. of Byromville, Mrs. C. C. Brand and Mrs. C. C. Hill, both of Montezuma; two brothers, A. K. Brown of Atlanta, W. K. Brown of Byromville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Montezuma Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. L. E. Williams officiating. Interment followed in FELTON CEMETERY in Montezuma.
Pallbearers were Arthur Brown, Beeman Brown, Wiley Riddle, C. V. Riddle, Sam Batton, W. H. Guerry, Dan Harvill, Louis Williams, Jim Taylor and J. E. DeVaughn.

Mrs. Emmett Blackshear Hamilton, Jr. 47, died Thursday at her home in Tifton.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 10'30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church, Tifton with the Rev. L. C. Fullerton officiating. Burial was in the TIFTON CEMETERY.
A native of Lilly, Ga., Mrs. Hamilton was the daughter of the late David William and Nealie Merritt Summerford. She married Emmett Blackshear Hamilton, Jr. of Montezuma in 1930 and after living in both Montezuma and Eastman, they moved to Tifton where Mr. Hamilton operates the Hamilton Sporting Goods Store. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Tifton First Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Emmett B. Hamilton, III; three brothers, Leslie Summerford of Albany; Dan W. Summerford of University Park, Md.; and Joe L. Summerford of Atlanta; and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle S. Marsh of Fitzgerald and Mrs. Martha S. Hodsett of Miami.

Albert Oscar Hill, 74, died Thursday, December 11, at the home of his son, Archie Hill of Oglethorpe, after a short illness. He was a retired railroad man, living in Macon and Taylor Counties all of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nina Shirah Hill; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph M. Keating of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Archie Hill of Oglethorpe; one brother, W. G. Hill of Butler; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Berry of Savannah; Mrs. Richard Allen of Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren, Dora Faye Hill of Oglethorpe; Ralph Cox of Kingsport, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from Oglethorpe Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin York and the Rev. Carl Ayers officiating. Burial was in OGLETHORPE CITY CEMETERY.
Pallbearers were David English, Emory English, Harvey Mathis, Steve Johnson, David Webb and E. M. Brown. Smith-Tindol Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. John Creech, Homer G. Fowler and John Sims officiated. Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY.
Mrs. Hobbs, a native and life long resident of Macon County, was born May 25, 1895, the daughter of Joe L. Bivins and Della Kronea Bivins. She was a homemaker, a member of Whitewater Baptist Church and the wife of the late Grover Cleveland Hobbs, Sr.
Survivors are a son, G. C. Hobbs, Jr., three daughters, Mrs. "Sweetie" Hammock and Mrs. Edyth Bearden, all of Oglethorpe, Mrs. Louise Hooks of Marshallville, twenty one grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A native of Alexander City, Alabama, Mrs. Harris was born October 5, 1901, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Nix. She had resided in Macon County most of her life, was a homemaker and the wife of the late Isadore Harris. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. JoAnne H. Mrs. Hammock was born in Macon County, August 13, 1901, the daughter of John N. Williams and Mattie Tarrer Williams. She was a life long resident of Macon County, a retired merchant, a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church. She was the wife of the late John W. Hammock.
Survivors are two sons, Everett D. Hammock, George N. Hammock; a daughter, Mrs. Dan O. Harvill, all of Oglethorpe; two sisters, Miss Annie Mae Williams of Oglethorpe, Mrs. Nettie Harbuck of Marshallville; a brother, Allen C. Parks Ham, 83, of 504 Engram Street, died Monday evening, October 9, 1989 at the Flint River Community Hospital. A native of Hackneyville, Alabama, Mr. Ham was born January 6, 1906 the son of William S. Ham and Ada McKinnon Ham.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 1989 in the Montezuma First Baptist Church, with burial in the BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY. The Rev. Randy Gregg and Paul Brill officiated.
Mr. Ham had resided here in Macon County most of his life where he was the retired owner and operator of Ham's Hardware and also retired from Southern Frozen Foods. He was also a veteran of World War II.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Hicks Ham of Montezuma, two sons, William Robert Ham & Harold Parks Ham, both of Atlanta; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Ray Ham Wridley of Hixon, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Louise H. Waters of Reynolds, Mrs. Jeanne H. Wood of Norfolk, Ga.; a abrother, Thomas Ham of Montezuma; three grandchildren.

Charles Carter Hill - Funeral Notice


Charles Carter Hill, a Montezuma resident, died suddenly of a heart attack at the Macon Hospital, Macon, Georgia, Friday pm, June 25, at the age of 70. He was a native of Winder, Georgia but resided here most all of his life. He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and was a retired carpenter.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 27, from the Montezuma Methodist Church with Rev. R. O. Edenfield officiating and burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY in Montezuma. Pallbearers: Sam Batton, Julian Warren, Ernest Hill, J. E. Hill, Joe Hill and Sanford Hill. Members of his Sunday School Class formed an honorary escort.

M-Sgt. Leon Cook Hogg, 51, of Oglethorpe died early Tuesday, December 12, 1961 at local hospital.
A native of Macon County, he had been in military service for 24 years and was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He was a member of Pine Level Methodist Church and Masonic Order 579.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen Fulbright Hogg, two daughters, Lee Hogg and Kyle Hogg, one son, Clinton Leon Hogg, all of Oglethorpe; mother, Mrs. J. W. Hogg of Oglethorpe; five brothers, James M. Hogg of Oglethorpe, Herbert Hogg of Atlanta, Paul Hogg of Oglethorpe; M-Sgt. John S. Hogg of Germany; Thomas Hogg of Perry; one sister, Mrs. G. E. Mr. Hortman died Tuesday morning in a Montezuma hospital after a short illness. Born and reared in Houston County, he had lived here for 32 years. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Montezuma Methodist church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Estelle Bush Hortman; one daughter, Miss Myrtice Estelle Hortman, both of Montezuma; and a number of cousins.

E. L. Holloway Passes After Long Illness; Rites Saturday.
Funeral services were held in Leesburg, Florida on Saturday for E. L. [Preacher] Holloway, of that city who died in Americus on Thursday afternoon of last week. Mr. Holloway became ill while visiting relatives in Americus at Christmas and had been hospitalized there since.
A native of Andersopnville, he was born in 1890, and had been living ihn Leesburg for 35 years. He was a steward in the Methodist Church and a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Flossie Parker; three brothers, Rufus Holloway, Morris Holloway and Junior Holloway, all of Leesburg; and a number of nieces and nephews, one os whom is Mrs. George Hammock of Oglethorpe.

Funeral services for James Robert Hammock, Sr, 86, were conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 10, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oglethorpe. The Rev. C. A. Phillips and Rev. Henry Thomas officiated, and interment was in OGLETHORPE CEMETERY. Grandsons of the deceased served as pallbearers.
A resident of near Oglethorpe, Mr. Hammock died Tuesday afternoon in a local hospital following a short illness. He was a native of Warren County, but had made his home in Macon County for the past 57 [?] years.
Survivors include the wife, the former Laura Lawrence; four daughters, Mrs. Coleman Joiner of Montezuma; Mrs. Tom Green, Miss Daisy Hammock and Miss Bernice Hammock of Oglethorpe; two sons, Lyman Hammock and James Robert Hammock, Jr., both of Oglethorpe. 15 Grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. W. R. Hicks, Lifelong Resident, Buried Here Monday.
Funeral services were held at the Montezuma Methodist Church Monday afternoon for Mrs. Missouri Harp Hicks, who passed away at her home in Montezuma Sunday morning after an extended illness.
Born in the Garden Valley district, the daughter of pioneer citizens, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Eugene Harp. The deceased was a lifelong resident of the county. She was the widow of the late W. R. Hicks, who died in 1930. Mrs. Hicks was a charter member of the Montezuma Garden Club, and a member of the Woman's Club and the U.D.C.
Survivors include one son, Lewis Hicks, two sisters, Misses Vera Harp and Miss Tessa Harp, all of Montezuma and a nephew, James Harp Roberts of Byromville.
Officiating at the services were the Rev. E. L. Williams and the Rev. W. S. Johnson of the Methodist Church and the Rev. C. G. Ward of the Baptist Church. Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY.

Mr. Hood was a life long resident of Macon County.

Funeral services for Mrs. William W. Hambrick, who died Thursday at her home in Macon after a long illness, were held in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary at 11 am Friday, January 4, 1957. The Rev. Seaborn Wynn officiated and burial was in IDEAL CEMETERY.
Mrs. Hambrick, the former Miss Annie Forte Woodruff, was born in Dooly County. She moved to Macon 14 yerars ago. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Sumter County.
Surviving besides her husband, are two sons, William W. Hambrick, Jr., of Macon and Lewis W.  Funeral services for Mrs. Lutie Pennington Herring, 73, of Montezuma, were held Wednesday in the Montezuma Methodist Church. Burial was in  FELTON CEMETERY.

Rev. R. O. Edenfield and Rev. James C. Moore officiated.

  Mrs. Herring passed away Tuesday, November 17, after a brief illness in a local hospital.  She was a life-long resident of Macon County and a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church.  She was a retired employee of Southern Frozen Foods, Montezuma.

  Funeral services for Mrs. Nina Shirah Hill, 81 of Oglethorpe, who died November 20, were held November 22, from the Oglethorpe Baptist Church.

  The Rev. Richard Gardner and the Rev. Carl Ayers officiated with burial in the OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL GARDEN CEMETERY.  Nephews served as pallbearers.

  Mrs. Hill was a native of Macon County and had lived in Oglethorpe most of her life.  She was a member of the Oglethorpe Baptist Church.

  Survivors include a son, Oglethorpe Chief of Police, Archie Clinton  Hill; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph M. Keating of Tampa, Fla.; and three sisters-in-law, Mrs. E. L. Jenkins of Montezuma and Mrs. Bessie Allen of Ocala, Fla. Mrs. Gregg Hill of Butler, Ga.

  Henry Swain Hortman, Jr., 49, of Ideal, died November 16, 1994 in an Atlanta hospital.

  Services were held Nov. 19, at LITTLE BETHEL FREEWILL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY.

  He was a native of Taylor County and had lived in Ideal for the past year.  He was the owner and operator of Reynolds Service Station and a former employee of Wanderlodge in Fort Valley. He was a member of Little Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.

  He is survived by his wife, Margie Raburn Hortman of Ideal; two sons, Brad Hortman of Reynolds and Cliff Hortman of Ideal; two brothers, Gean Hortman and Will Hortman of Reynolds and two grandchildren.

  Goddard's Funeral Home of Reynolds was in charge.

  Fred Garfield Hardage of Route 2, Oglethorpe, died Monday in a Montezuma hospital.  He was 72. 

  Services will be held Wednesday in LITTLE BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH in Ideal with burial in the Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Sidney Jones will officiate.

  Mr. Hardage, an Upson County native, lived in Macon County all of his life.  He was a retired truck driver with Haugabook Oil Co. in Montezuma and a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church. He also served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

  Survivors include his wife, Lorene Felker Hardage of Oglethorpe; a son, Steve Hardage of Oglethorpe; two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Barfield of Warner Robins and Mrs. Dock Greene of Butler; and a grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Lou Smith Harden, 93, of Andersonville, who died December 7, in the Ideal Nursing Home, were held Monday at the RED HILL PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH, with the Rev. Leighton Norris officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

 Serving as pallbearers were John Eubanks, Marvin Slappey, Richard Slappey, Eddie Slappey, Dave Slappey, and Bobby Jones.

 Mrs. Harden was a lifelong resident of Andersonville.

 Survivors include two sons, Ralph Harden of Andersonville, and Silas S. Harden of Jacksonville, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren.

Homer Fowler officiated. Mr. Hambrick was born July 21, 1892, the son of George W. Hambrick and Mrs. Fannie Cook Hambrick, and had been a resident of Macon for a number of years, coming here from Americus. He was retired from Civil Service at Warner Robins and a member of the Baptist denomination. While in Americus he was a resident of the Magnolia Manor. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vera Radford Hambrick of Macon; one son, William Hambrick, Jr. of Columbus; two daughters; Mrs. Robert F. Farish of Columbus and Mrs. Ralph Harden of Andersonville; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lewis Hambrick of Columbus. Hart's Mortuary was in charge. Fort Valley - Funeral services for Dr. Jacob E. Haslam, Jr. well-known Peach County physician who died Monday at a Montezuma hospital after a brief illness, were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Fort Valley Methodist Church.

The Rev. G. N Rainey officiated and burial was in OAKLAWN CEMETERY.

Dr. Haslam, 72, had practiced medicine in this area 50 years. He was a lieutenant colonel in Gov. Marvin Griffin's staff; consultant physician for the employee retirement system of Georgia; physician __the Selective Service during World War II; a member of former Gov. Herman Talmadge's staff; Surgeon for the Central of Georgia ___lway, and a member of the Fort Valley Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife: [not named], one son, J. Edward Haslam, III, of Fort Valley, a daughter, Mrs. George M. McDermid of Quincy, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. S. J. McGhee of Fort Valley and Mrs. H. A. Lee of Marshallville; two brothers, George M. Haslam, Sr. of Fort Valley and C. C. Haslam of Marshallville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

  John H. Hill,  Sr.,  78, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 12, in a local hospital following an illness of several weeks.
  Born in Winder, Ga. he had been a resident of Macon County since 1919.  Mr. Hill was a member of the local Methodist Church and Carter Hill Lodge No. 268 F. and A.M., Bethlehem, Ga.
  Survivors include his wife the former Elizabeth Matthews; two daughters, Mrs. Sam Batton of Montezuma and Mrs. Julian Warren of Miami, Fla.; six sons, Carter Hill and Joseph Hill, both of Montezuma, Ernest Hill of Pinehurst, J. Erastus Hill of Columbus, J. H. Hill, Jr. of Warner Robins and Robert Sanford Hill of Americus, a sister, Mrs. W. H. Perry of Statham, Ga.; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Montezuma Methodist Church with the Rev. McCoy Johnson and Rev. C. G. Ward, Officiating.
  Serving as active pallbearers were Mr. Hill's six sons.  The Honorary pallbears - Many - Not Copied.
  Burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY in Montezuma.

Funeral Today For W. C. Hicks, Retired Farmer and Merchant.[Microfilmed on the curve]

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the residence at 4:00 for William Colon Hicks, 69, who died Wednesday night at 7:45 at a local hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Hicks was born in Wrightsville, Ga. April 26, 1875, the son of the late William J. Hicks and Samantha Kent Hicks. He was the senior member of the firm of Hicks and ___for thirty years, having begun the business in 1907.

He is survived by his wife [un-named], one daughter, Mrs. Cecil Queener of Montezuma; one son W. C. Hicks of Montezuma, three sisters, Mrs. C. _. Watson, Mrs. Ida H. Phillips, and Mrs. M. M. Lee of Moultrie; and two brothers, T. J. Hicks and H. A. Hicks of Tallahassee, Fla.

Mr. Hicks was a member of the Methodist Church and operated a large farming interest in Macon County until his retirement a few years ago. Interment will be in FELTON CEMETERY.

H. T. Harris Buried Wednesday Morning At Pleasant Grove.

H. T. Harris, prominent farmer of the Garden Valley district, died at his home at 7:30 Monday evening, following an extended period of ill health. He was 75 years of age, born in Houston County, but had lived in the Garden Valley district most of his life. He was the son of Green Henry and Georgia Aultman Harris.

Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at the PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH, with the Rev. Carl J. Ayers officiating and the Rev. George M. Ray of the Montezuma Baptist Church assisting.

Surviving his death are: one brother, G. H. Harris of Reynolds; six sisters, Mrs. H. L. Rodgers of Oglethorpe, Mrs. Howard Johnson, Mrs. O. P. Duggar of Tallahassee, Fla.,; Mrs. B. F. Boland, Mrs. A. J. Richardson and Mrs. P. C. Harrell of Orlando, Fla.; one son, H. T. Harris, Jr. of Oglethorpe six daughters, Mrs. B. C. Cullens of Waycross; Mrs. Warren McKinney of Cordele; Mrs. W. D. Mrs. Hambrick was a native of Schley County and a member of County Line Baptist Church. She was the widow of Jesse Hambrick.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Roy Ellis, Mrs. Allen Myrick, Mrs. Malcolm Poole and Mrs. Ossey Allen of Ellaville, and Mrs. David Childs of Ideal; five sons, H. M. and O. W. Funeral services for Joseph Samuel Hearn, Jr., 16, were held Thursday, June 18, at 4 pm in the Marshallville Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Tribble officiating. Burial was in the MARSHALLVILLE CEMETERY.

Young Hearn was killed Sunday in an automobile accident in Texas. He was a native of Macon County.

Survivors include his parents, Maj. and Mrs. J. S. Hearn, Sr. of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; two sisters, Sheryl Hearn and Vicki Hearn, both of Dyess A.F.B., Texas; Grandmother, Mrs. C. C. Childres of Marshallville and Mrs. S. G. Hearn of LaGrange.

L. R. [Dow] Hill Taken By Death: Funeral Sunday

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the Montezuma Funeral Home for Lorenzo Ripley [Dow] Hill, who died at his home in Montezuma on Saturday, January 1st. He was 76 years old and had been a resident of this community for 55 years. The Rev. B. A. Pafford officiated at the ceremony.

Mr. Hill was a retired merchant and was well known throughout the county. His wife who survives him was the former Miss Martha Peavy. Other survivors are two sons, Seymour Hill, U.S.,Navy, Norfolk, Va. and Howard Hill of Vienna; two daughters, Mrs. Guy Huthnance of Birmingham, Al.; Mrs. O. E. Tebow of Augusta; one sister, Mrs. Betty Cashell of New York City.

MRS. THURSTON [Mary Catherine Herring] HARRIS

Mrs. Thurston Harris Buried At Garden Valley On Tuesday.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the home in Garden Valley for Mrs. Thurston Harris, who died Monday evening at her home after several months illness.

Mrs. Harris spent weeks in a local hospital and was removed to her home, where her condition grew steadily more serious until her death. She was 71 years old.

Mrs. Harris was the former Miss Catherine Herring, daughter of pioneer residents of the county. She had lived all of her life in Macon County.

The Rev. George Ray of the Montezuma Baptist Church officiated at the services and interment was in the PLEASANT GROVE GARDEN VALLEY CHURCHYARD.

She is survived by her husband, Thurston Harris, Sr. and the following children: Mrs. Blanche Cullens of Waycross; Mrs. W. D. Harp of Garden Valley; Mrs. Leonard Cooper of Reynolds, Mrs. James Shirley of Macon; Mrs. Oscar McKinney of Cordele, Mrs. Ott Johnson of Americus and Thurston Harris, Jr. of Garden Valley. One sister, Mrs. D. T. Shealy of Reynolds, also survives.

Mrs. Chas. A. Head, Sr., Buried Monday; Died Sunday Noon.

Funeral services were held at three o'clock Monday afternoon at RED HILL BAPTIST CHURCH for Mrs. Charles A. Head, Sr. of near Oglethorpe, who died at the Montezuma hospital shortly before noon Sunday.

Mrs. Head, who had lived in Macon County all of her life, was 66 years of age. Her husband, Charles A. Head, Sr. is president of the Macon County Farm Bureau.

Surviving her passing are her husband; four sons, Allen Head of Oglethorpe; Charles Head, Jr. of Hawkinsville, Russell Head of Cordele, Harry Head of Americus; one daughter, Miss Louise Head of Columbus; one brother, Robert Duke of Oglethorpe and six sisters, Mrs. S. B. Duke of Macon County; Mrs. Mary Edge of Cordele; Mrs. William Johnson of Oglethorpe, Mrs. W. H. Grantham of Thomaston, Mrs. J. W. Aycock of Andersonville; Mrs. H. Y. Carson of Birmingham and Mrs. G. Q. Rutland of Seville. There are also a number of grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Montezuma Funeral Home.

James Monroe Hogg, 78 of Oglethorpe, died August 7, 1986 in Ideal Intermediate Care Home. He was born on November 14, 1907, the son of James Walter Hogg and Mamie Aldridge Hogg. He was buried in PINE LEVEL CEMETERY near Oglethorpe.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock for Mrs. Carrie Louise Hood, aged 67, who died at a local hospital Sunday, November 14, at 5 o'clock. She had been a resident of Macon County all of her life.

The widow of James William Hood, she was the daughter of Mark and Missouri Vinson Brantley. The services were held at the Montezuma Funeral Home with the Rev. B. A. Pafford of the Montezuma Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the FELTON CEMETERY.

Survivors were: two daughters, Mrs. E. E. Heisler of Clearwater, Florida and Mrs. Florence Jones of Montezuma and one brother, L. R. Brantley of Cordele.

Mrs. G. T. Hill Buried At Pleasant Grove Sunday

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock for Mrs. G. T. Hill of Miona Springs, who died in a local hospital on Saturday. She was 75 years old, and had been ill for several years, although her last, fatal illness was only of about ten days' duration.

Mrs. Hill was born Sallie Melvin, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Melvin of Taylor County. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1920.

Surviving are her five sons, Monroe Hill of Albany, Cleveland Hill, Arthur Hill, Monroe Hill and Robert Hill of Miona springs. [NOTE: Monroe Hill is listed twice & one son not named]

Services were held at the PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH with interment in the CHURCHYARD CEMETERY. The Rev. Carl Ayers, White Water Baptist pastor, officiated.

JOHN DAVIS HORTMAN

Final Rites For J. D. Hortman, 86, Conducted Wednesday.

Funeral services for John Davis Hortman, 86, who died Tuesday in a Macon hospital following a long illness, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Roberta Primitive Baptist Church.

Elder Cecil Darity of Macon officiated and burial was in the PROVIDENCE CHURCH CEMETERY.

Mr. Hortman, a retired farmer, was a member of one of Crawford County's oldest families.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joe Childers and Miss Myrtis Horman, both of Roberta and Mrs. Walter Mitchell of Musella; eight sons, Alfred Hortman, Lehman Hortman and Kenneth Hortman, all of Roberta, Jim Hortman, Timothy Hortman and Louis Hortman, all of Reynolds, Tommy Hortman of Fort Valley and Howard Hortman of Ogelthorpe; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

JAMES MONROE HILL

James Monroe Hill, 77, died Monday in a Montezuma hospital after a long illness. Services were held at 3 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Goddard Funeral Home in Reynolds. Burial was in the PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY in Garden Valley.
Mr. Hill, a lifelong resident of Macon County, was a retired farmer.
Survivors include a brother, Cleve Hill of Reynolds; six nieces and nine nephews.
