 MRS. JOHN MACK [Mamie Johnson] SNELLGROVE

 Mrs. Mamie Johnson Snellgrove, 87, of Ideal, died September 30, 1963 in the home of her niece, Mrs. C., E. Wilder in Macon.

 Funeral services were held, October 2, in the Ideal Methodist Church. The Rev. Lewis Strickland officiated and burial was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.

 Pallbearers – Not copied.

 A lifelong resident of Macon County, Mrs. Snellgrove was postmistress in Ideal for several years, and operated a grocery store there for over 40 years.

 She was the daughter of the late Samuel K. Johnson and the late Mrs. Fannie Brady Johnson of Macon County, and was the widow of Mack Snellgrove. She was a member of the Ideal Methodist Church.

 Survivors in addition to her niece, Mrs. Wilder, included two sisters, Mrs. T. C. Gardner of Ideal, and Mrs. H. A. Shipp of Cordele, and several other nieces and nephews.

 Watson-Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma was in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS  W.  SMITH

Final Rites Held Tuesday For T. W. Smith, 72.
  Thomas W. Smith, 72, retired Oglethorpe farmer and Veteran of World War I, died Sunday afternoon at the Dublin Veterans' Administration Hospital after a long illness.
  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH near Oglethorpe, with the Rev. F. M. York and the Rev. Carl Ayers officiating.  Burial followed in the CHURCHYARD CEMETERY.
  Pallbearers were Robert Jones, E. L. Simmons, Brown Perry, Howard Hortman, Lawrence Simmons and Sam Carter.
  A native of Macon County, Mr. Smith made his home in Garden Valley community and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a Mason and a former Justice of Peace.
  Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Alice Smith Gilmore of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Eunice Smith McDonald of Decatur; two brothers, M. B. Smith of Sanford, Fla., and Emmett Smith of Auburndale, Fla. and a number of nieces and nephews.
  Watson Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 WILLIE CROSBY - COSBY SPEIR, SR.

 Funeral services for Willie Crosby Speir, 69, of Dooling, who died unexpectedly Sunday at his home, were held Tuesday in the Byromville Methodist Church.

 The Rev. Cephas Williamson officiated and burial was in BERTHA DOZIER MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY in Montezuma.

 Mr. Speir, a life-long resident of Dooling, was a member of the Byromville Methodist Church and was the owner and operator of a grocery store in Dooling.

 Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Susie Culberth Speir of Dooling; one son, Willie C. Speir, Jr. of Byromville; two brothers, A. W. Speir of Dooling and C. M. Speir of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Ann Patrick and Miss Mary Speir, both of Dooling, and Mrs. A. B. King, Sr. of Unadilla; and two granddaughters, Miss Elizabeth Ann Speir and Miss Patricia Sue Speir, both of Byromville.

 Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Johnnie Lee Shirah
Johnnie Lee Shirah, 77, died Wednesday in a local nursing home. Born in
Crisp County, she was the daughter of the late John Shirah and the late Mattie Leigh Massey Shirah. She lived in Macon County for most of her life. Survivors: brother, Hilton Shirah of Moantezuma; and several nieces and nephews.
  Services: 11 am today in PINE LEVEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY near Oglethorpe. The Rev. Ralph Price, Jr. will officiate.
  Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma has charge of arrangements.

JAMES  PATTERSON  SIMMONS, SR.
J. P. Simmons Dies at Reynolds; Rites Held Monday.
James Patterson Simmons, 54, of Reynolds died at the Sams-Whatley Hospital in Reynolds Sunday, March 29, following a short illness.
  A life-time resident of Taylor and Macon County, Mr. Simmons was the son of the late Will G. and Mary Deliah Bledsoe Simmons. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Reynolds.
  Funeral services were held Monday at Pleasant Grove, Elder John Mangaham officiated, assisted by the Rev. Homer Fowler, Interment was in PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet Eubanks Simmons; one son, James Patterson Simmons, Jr. of Oglethorpe; six sisters, Mrs. Leon Rodgers, Mrs. Clem Robinson, Mrs. Brown Perry, Mrs. Bertha Windham, all of Macon County, Mrs. Roy Childres of Palatka, Fla., and Mrs. Roy Eubanks of Thomaston and three brothers, Ben Simmons, Elijah Simmons and Burn Simmons, all of Macon County.

[Note: Jim P. Simmons [April 1, 1909 - March 29, 1964] is buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery beside his wife, Harriet E. Simmons [July 14, 1910 - Aug. 19, 1984]
 


Macon County Citizen - Oglethorpe, Ga. January 3, 1930

JAMES  SANFORD  LAVENDER, SR.

Death Claims Mr. J. S. Lavender.
  Mr. J. S. Lavender, 69, died early Tuesday morning, December 25th 1929, at his home just south of Montezuma.
  Mr. Lavender had been in ill health for a number of years, but his death came as a surprise to his relatives and friends. He was strickened early Christmas morning with a heart attack and died instantly.
  Mr. Lavender has made Montezuma his home for a number of years and at one time he was recognized as one of the best contractors in this section, but after his health failed, he retired from active work.
  The deceased is survived by one son and two daughters[not named].  Interment took place in FELTON'S CEMETERY.

  JOHN  "Jack"  SMITH

Funeral Services For Judge Smith Saturday.
Funeral services for uncle "Jack" Smith, 75, one of this community's oldest and most highly respected citizens, were held at PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY, Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Woodard of Hawkinsville.  Mr. Smith had long been recognized as one of this sections leading citizens, and up until his health began to fail, some two years ago, always took a leading part in all affairs in which his community was affected.  For a number of years he had been Justice of the Peace in the Garden Valley District, and on this account, a number of years ago he acquired the name of Judge, by which he was familiarly known to his hundreds of friends and acquaintances.  He was also a splendid farmer, and was engaged in farming at the time of his death, which resulted from malaria.
  Surviving, in addition to his widow [not named] , are two sons, Mr. Marion B. Smith of Sanford, Fla., and Mr. Tom Smith of this county, and three daughters, Mrs. H. L. Gilmore of this city, Mrs. Fannie Rigsby, also of this county and Mrs. Eunice McDonald of Raleigh, N.C.

J.  L.  SHEALY

Funeral Services For Mr. J. L. Shealy At. Macon Tuesday.
Funeral services for J. L. Shealy, whose death occurred in New Mexico last Friday, were held at Hart's Chapel in Macon Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Jno. L. Yost, Pastor of the Lutheran Church of Altnata.  Mr. Shealy, who was known to his friends her as "Bill" had been suffering from several months from an incurable disease, and the end did not come unexpectedly.  He was born and reared near here, and had a host of friends in his community who will be deeply grieved to learn of his passing.
  He is survived by his Mother, Mrs. J. W. Shealy, three brothers, P. C. Shealy and Howard Shealy of Macon and W. C. Shealy of Deland, Fla.; two sisters, Miss Ruby Shealy of Macon and Mrs. C. W. Cotton of Atlanta.  Interment was at ROSE HILL  CEMETERY in Macon, Ga.

MRS.  LAURA JANE  SMITH
 
Mrs. Laura Smith Passes At Ideal; Rites Held January 21.
  Mrs. Laura Jane Smith, 72, passed away January 20, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John B. Albritton of Ideal, following a short illness.
  Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, January 21, from the Ideal Methodist Church with the Rev. L. R. Lancaster and the Rev. Henry Thomas officiating.  Interment was in the IDEAL CEMETERY.  Serving as pallbearers were E. J. Smith, W. P. Brooks, James Roberson, Heyward Smith, G. C. Gilbert and Chappell Brooks.
  Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John Noble of Wilmington, Del., Mrs. John B. Allbritton of Ideal, Mrs. Wilhemina McCarty of Thomaston, Mrs. Edmond Halstead of St. Augustine, Fla.; two sons, J. V. and C. H. Smith of Ideal; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

HENRY SYKES SIMMONS

Services Held At Pleasant Grove For H. S. Simmons, 80.

H. S. Simmons, 80, son of the late Ben F. and Pinkie Smith Simmons, passed away at a Milledgeville hospital Saturday, November 6. Funeral services were conducted Monday from the Pleasant Grove Church near Oglethorpe with the Rev. Arvie Thornton officiating. Interment was in PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY. [The obit says burial in Corinth Cemetery but his marker is located in Pleasant Grove Cemetery]

Nephews serving as pallbearers were Lucius Simmons, Lawrence Simmons, Ben Simmons, Lige Simmons, John Simmons and Marshall Harris.

He is survived by one son, Paul Simmons of Thomaston; one grandson, Ralph Simmons of Thomaston; one sister, Mrs. G. H. Harris of Macon; one brother P. H. Simmons of Garden Valley and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lilla Simmons and Mrs. Annie Simmons, both of Reynolds.

[Note: Henry Sykes Simmons [February 22, 1874 - November 6, 1954] is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery beside, Rosa Matthews Simmons [1883 - 1945]

Cedar Valley Rites Held Sunday for Mrs. Amanda Satterfield

Mrs. Amanda Seitz Satterfield, 73, passed away at her home Saturday following a lengthy illness.

Born in Lumpkin County, the daughter of the late Oscar and Jen___ Davis Seitz, she had been the wife of Will M. Satterfield for 51 years. She was a member of the Cedar Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Williard Wil___ of Leslie and Mrs. Joe Hill and Mrs. Earl Jones of Montezuma; two sons, Grady Satterfield and Ernest Satterfield, both of Montezuma, two sisters, Mrs. L. N. ____ of Dahlonega and Mrs. A. G. ____. two brothers, ____ Seitz and Coleman Seitz, both of _____ & eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Cedar Valley baptist Church with the Rev. Otho Pirkle officiating, with burial in Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery in Montezuma.

MRS. NORRIS D. [Dorothy Lucille Hill] SINGLETON

Funeral Services Held Sunday For Mrs. N. D. Singleton [Microfilmed on the curve-Difficult to read]

Funeral services were conducted by the Montezuma Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, August 26th, for Mrs. Norris D. Singleton, 26,. Mrs. Singleton died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital.

Mrs. Singleton was the former Miss Dorothy Lucille Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Hill of Montezuma. She was born in Montezuma on November 2, 1918, and had spent her entire life here. Mrs. Singleton was a member of the Baptist Church.

The Rev. Chas H. Kopp, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated and interment was in FELTON'S CEMETERY.

Mrs. Singleton is survived by her husband, N. D. Singleton; one son, _oger [probably Roger], and daughter, Faye; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mose Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Albert and Mrs. Douglas Griggers of Montezuma, and three brothers, Charles Willis Hill, L. _. Hill and Clovis Hill of Montezuma.
