Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Mrs. Ann English.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ann Gilmore English, 34, were held Wednesday afternoon, 3 p.m. from the chapel of Smith-Tindol Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Thomas officiated and burial was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY. Pallbearers - Not Copied.

Mrs. English, a life-long resident of Oglethorpe, died instantly in an auto crash on the Americus-Cordele Highway early Sunday Evening.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Pearl Green Gilmore and two sons, Grady H. English and Donald Eugene English, all of Oglethorpe; a sister, Mrs. Sara J. Guilmette of Washing, D.C.; and two brothers, L. W. Gilmore of Macon and James Gilmore of Augusta.

WALLACE JEFFERSON ENGLISH

Wallace J. English Buried Saturday At Oglethorpe.

Wallace Jefferson English, 69, former resident of Macon County, died in an Atlanta hospital December 16. He resided at 644 N. Highland Avenue, N. E. and was a retired Railroad employee.

Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 p.m. December 17, from the chapel of Smith-Tindol Funeral Home. The Rev. C. A. Phillips officiated and interment was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.

Pallbearers were Gene Stafford, Bobb Stafford, George Hammock, B. C. Kennedy, W. C. Williams and Bill Scovill.

Survivors include two brothers, W. M. English of Quitman and R. S. English of Nashville, Ga. ; one nephew, G. E. English of Smyrna and one niece, Miss Alma Giles of Macon.

Smith-Tindol Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

BELOVED OGLETHORPE WOMAN P-ASSES TO ETERNAL REWARD
Oglethorpe, Ga. - Jan 9 - Hundreds of friends and relatives paid a final tribute Saturday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran Church to Miss Fannie Elmore, whose death occurred at an Americus hospital early Friday morning following an illness of __ weeks.
Miss Elmore was born in Senoia, Ga. the daughter of the late Rev. J. Samuel and Martha Summer Elmore, but had lived in Oglethorpe since her early childhood. Her father was a pioneer Lutheran minister of this section of Georgia and was one of the Macon County Pastors for thirty-four years. He also was an ordinary of the county for many years.
She was active in church and U.D.C. work and in former years had been a teacher, connected with the Lutheran orphanage in Salem, Va.. She had served the town of Oglethorpe as postmastriss.
The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. D. L. Heglar.
Interment was in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.
She is survived by one brother, Eu__Elmore of Atlanta, and three sisters, Mrs. W. M.[Daisy] English of Quitman and Mrs. Troy C. [Mary Belle] Powers and Mrs. Columbus T. [Pearl] Harden of Oglethorpe

Funeral Services for Mrs. English Held Sunday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Missouri A. English, 90, whose death occurred at ten o'clock Saturday evening, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wash Baker, near Montezuma, were held at the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY at three o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Bowen, Pastor of Red Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. English was said to be second to the oldest person in this county, and was one of the most beloved of the old citizens. She had been in bad health for some fifteen years, during which time she suffered untold agony at times, but always without a murmur. She was possessed with a disposition that endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, enjoyed the distinction of being loved by young and old alike, and her passing, despite her years, cast a gloom not only over Oglethorpe, but over the entire community. where she spent her entire life. For years she had made her home with her daughters, spending a part of the time with Mrs. Baker, at whose residence she died, part with Mrs. A. L. Kleckley and a part with Mrs. E. L. Murray, another daughter, Mrs. E. M. Kleckley of Atlanta and prior to this time resided here.
She is survived by one son, Mr. Charles English of this county, and four daughters, Mrs. Wash Baker of Dooly County, Mrs. E. M. Kleckley of Atlanta and Mrs. A. L. Kleckley and Mrs. E. L. Murray, both of this point.

 Mrs. Willie B. Ellison, Former Resident, Buried Here Monday.

Mrs. Willie Bell Ellison, 57, of East Church St., Americus, died Friday night, March 28, at the Americus Hospital.  She had been in failing health for some time.

  A native of Sylvester, Mrs. Ellison resided in Montezuma for a number of years before moving to Americus seventeen years [abt.  1941] ago.

  Survivors include four sons, Guy Ellison of Leslie, Paul Ellison of U.S.,Navy, Honolulu; Earl Ellison, U.S.Navy of San Diego and T. A. Calhoun of Macon.

  Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in Reese Park Chapel of Americus, with the Rev. M. C. Gardner officiating.  Burial followed in FELTON CEMETERY, Montezuma, Ga.

Whereas, God in his providence has seen fit to remove, by the hand of death, our much beloved brother, Elder Sampson English, since our last session, and while we bow in humble submission to his divine will, yet we deem it our duty as an evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by us, to offer the following tribute of respect to his memory: Brother English was greatly loved and esteemed by our body, having long been one of its leading and most useful members. He had been a faithful minister of Christ for the last forty years, and in his dying moments he rejoiced in that faith which had enabled him to overcome the world, and now to meet death without fear. His long and useful life endeared him to all who love the truth, and though we meet him no more on earth, yet we trust we shall meet him in that realm where parting is known no more.

On February 25, 1999, Millie Stewart, Guelda Hay and I, Davine V. Campbell went to the English Cemetery in Macon County, Georgia to confirm the dates on his marker.
There has been some clean-up activity there and it looks very good, so much better than when we originally surveyed this cemetery in 1993. THANKS TO SOMEONE

I made pictures of many of the markers that day.
SO - it does appear that the marker itself has the incorrect date on it since his Obituary is found in the Upatoi Baptist Association Minutes Sept. 8, 1866, in addition to the fact that he does not appear in the 1870 census with his family.

January 9, 1925 - DEATH OF MR. J. RESPASS ENGLISH
After several months of serious illness and suffering, Mr. J. Respass English died at his home here early Friday morning. Mr. English was one of our prominent merchants. He sold his farm several years ago and moved into town and went into the mercantile business and in which he was engaged at the time of his death.
He leaves his wife, two daughters, Gladys and Myrna, one brother and several sisters and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
He was buried in the family lot in Cemetery here Saturday morning, Rev. Mr. Jelks conducting the ceremonies.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MISS HELEN ENGLISH

Oglethorpe, Ga. Nov. 23, Funeral services for Helen English, thirteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. English of Quitman, who died at her home at 5;30 Saturday morning, were held from the Lutheran Church here at 3 pm Sunday, conducted by Rev. Chas. A. Phillips of Mooresville, N.C. a close friend of the family, who was assisted by Rev. D. L. Heglar.
Strickened with that incurable type of blood poison, she was ill only four days, and while everything humanly possible was done to save her life, it was realized hours before the end came that there was no hope.
As a child, she had always visited Oglethorpe frequently, where she has a number of relatives and was one of the most lovable girls of her age the community knew, always being a favorite with both old and young alike. She was a member of the Lutheran Church here, a student of the Quitman High School, and her untimely passing came as a shock to both communities.
Perhaps no death in recent years has caused more gunuine sorrow and the services were attended by many citizens, both of this city and Quitman, many of whom were heard to say that in her passing they were reminded again, "That God Often Plucks His Choicest Flowers".
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, George English, who is a student at Lenoir-Rhyne College, of Hickory, N.C. and several near relatives of this city.
Interment was at the city cemetery and the services were in charge of the S.G.McCowan co. of Quitman.
The pall bearers were also young Quitman friends, who had been closely associated with her during her entire life.

MRS. E. G. ENGLISH PASSES AWAY

Reynolds, Ga. Dec. 21 - The death of Mrs. E. G. English, of Reynolds, was a shock to the whole Reynolds, Taylor County and adjoining counties Tuesday afternoon. This venerable lady would have been eighty years of age next January 7th and her death is a source of grief to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
Mrs. English was the daughter of Elder J. P. Glover (John Paschal Glover), a Primitive Baptist minister of note, and Matilda Vinson Glover.
Mrs. English having been married twice, her first husband was J. L. Ogburn who died in 1884 while her second husband was the late Capt. E. G. English.
Mrs. English had been ill of the infirmities of old age with influenza complications. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O. E. English of Portland, Oregon and Miss Melissa Ogburn, principal of Butler High School of Reynolds.
Services at the home at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday and interment at Glover's Cemetery.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. EUGENE STAFFORD
Oglethorpe, Ga. March 9, - Funeral services for Mrs. Eugene Stafford, 19, who death occurred at the Macon County Clinic at Montezuma early Friday morning, were held from the Baptist Church here at three o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. L. Jenkins of Ideal.
Mrs. Stafford who before her marriage was Miss Wynelle English, Was a native of this county and spent her entire life in this section.
She was only ill a few days, but it was realized some 48 hours before the end came, that recovery was impossible.
Surviving in addition to the young grief stricken husband, are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul English of Ideal; one child, Eugene Stafford, Jr.; one brother, Hiley English and a number of other relatives.
Interment was in the city [Oglethorpe] cemetery here.

CURTIS Q. ENGLISH DIES IN PORTLAND, ORE.
News was received in Oglethorpe today of the death Tuesday morning at a hospital in Portland, Oregon, of Curtis Q. English, former Macon County Citizen, his death having resulted from an illness of several days with influenza.
Mr. English was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom English of Englishville, and he is survived by three brothers in the old home community, Russell English, Will English and W. T. English and a sister, Mrs. Etta Royal of Ellaville, Ga. His wife, formerly Miss Florine Ogburn of Reynolds, Ga. survives and she is returning with the body to Reynolds for funeral and interment. The time for the funeral has not been announced, but it will probably not be before the first of next week, due to the length of the trip from Portland.

ANNIE ENGLISH MELTON OF MONTEZUMA, DIES

Annie English Melton, 87, of Cuyler Street, Montezuma, died Saturday night, September 4, 1999. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 7, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Burial followed at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens. Elder Robert Torrance and Rev. Clarence Keene officiated.
Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Sam Joe English, Sr. and Mittie Cathrine Smith. She is the widow of the late Quinn Melton. She was a Primitive Baptist, but attended church at Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church and the Oglethorpe Methodist Church. She was retired from Southern Frozen Foods.
She is survived by her brother, Sam Joe English of Bonaire; sisters, Catharine Theus of Cordele and Emma Fullbright of Oglethorpe; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jack Paul English

POWER MISHAP IS FATAL TO PAUL ENGLISH

Jack Paul English of Oglethorpe, was accidentally electrocuted early Saturday morning when he apparently stepped on a broken power line which had fallen in high weeds near his home.
He left his home about six o'clock to go squirrel hunting and was found by Georgia Powrer company repairmen when they went to check the line. The shotgun was found near the body.
A junior in high school, the fifteen year old boy was a member of the Oglethorpe school basketball team and a member of the local National Guard Unit..
Born December 8, 1933, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. English. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. C. Bryant of Ft. Valley and Mrs. Robert Aspinwall of Lineville, Ala. and three brothers, William English, Jr. and Neal English of Plains and Kenneth English of Fitzgerald, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. C. Paul of Cordele and his paternal grandfather, J. R. English of Montezuma.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Baptist Church of which Paul was a member.
Pallbearers and the honorary escort consisted of members of the National Guasrd and the Oglethorpe Basketball Team. Interment was in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.

John Edwin English

JOHN EDWIN ENGLISH, 59, BURIED AT CORDELE TUESDAY MORNING
John Edwin English, age 59, of Cordele, Ga. died in Waycross, Ga. Sunday, July 2, 1950 after an illness of several months. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church at Cordele Tuesday morning with interment in the Cordele Cemetery with Knight Templar Masonic services.
Born on a farm near Andersonville, Ga. his parents, the late Robert S. English, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Cheves English, moved to Dooly County in 1902 where he left the farm to enter railroad service, and with the exception of three years of campaigning with the armed forces in the Philippines , he ad been in the service of the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast, now the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Clara Mae Davies of Hawkinsville and Vienna, Ga. and by four brothers, W. M. English of Quitman, Ga., W. J. English of Atlanta, Paul H. S. English of Lakeland, Fla., and Robert S. English, Jr. of Nashville, Ga. and by several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE HELD TODAY FOR J. R. ENGLISH, 80.
Funeral services will be held in the Oglethorpe Baptist Church today [Thursday] for Joseph Richard English, 80 year old resident of Oglethorpe, who passed away at the Montezuma Hospital Tuesday after an illness of several weeks.
Rev. C. L. Goss will officiate and interment will be in the Oglethorpe Cemetery. Grandsons of the deceased will serve as pallbearers.
The son of the late Joseph and Sarah Williams English, Mr. English was born in 1870 and was a life long resident of Macon County. He was the husband of the late Lena Dyess English.
Survivors are six children, Mrs. R. J. Justice of Montezuma, Mrs. Jake Frank Peaster of Oglethorpe, Mrs. R. W. Murph of Columbus, Mrs. H. L. Helton of LeGrange, W. C. English of Oglethorpe and J. M. English of Thomaston and several grandchildren.

RITES WEDNESDAY FOR MRS. JUSTICE, 70, OF ANDERSONVILLE
Mrs. Minnie E. Justice, 70, lifelong resident of Andersonville, passed away at an Americus hospital early Monday night after an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Andersonville Baptist Church of which she was a member. The pastor, Rev. M. C. Gardner officiated, interment was in the Oglethorpe cemetery.
Mrs. Justice was born on May 19, 1880, the daughter of the late S. J. sand Maxey M. Peacock English. She was the wife of the late William Vassar Justice.
Survivors include one son, Clarence C. Justice of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Rooks of Winston Salem, N.C. and Mrs. Lila E. Jones of Andersonville; and one brother, Oscar J. English of Savannah.

MRS. BETTY KLECKLEY BELOVED OGLETHORPE CITIZEN, PASSES SAT.
Mrs. Betty Kleckley, beloved Oglethorpe citizen, passed away at her home on Saturday afternoon at the age of 94. She had been an invalid for several years, being confined to her bed most of the time.
A life-long resident of Macon County, Mrs. Kleckley was born on October 21, 1856, the daughter of the late Mack and Eugenia Peek English. She was the widow of the late Elisha J. Kleckley and the oldest member of the Oglethorpe Lutheran Church, which she served faithfully as long as her health permitted. [More of her activities - not copied]
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. W. F. Murray and Miss Ruth Kleckley, both of Oglethorpe; two brothers, M. H. English and Sam J. English of Oglethorpe; one sister, Mrs. Dan Kleckley of Oglethorpe, several grandchildren and two great, great, grandchildren, representing five generations.
Funeral services were held at her home Sunday afternoon, conducted by The Rev. Lloyd H. Seiler with burial in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.

English, 56, died Monday, March 27, 2000. He was born in Macon County, son of the late Olin English.
Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Gray English of Andersonville; children, Edwin English of Potterville and Robbie English and Davis English, both of Ellaville; and sister, Billie Jo Arthur of Americus.

Elizabeth Cook English, 90, of Montezuma passed away Saturday, April 9, 2000. Funeral services were held Sunday in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.
Born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Will and Elizabeth Cook. She was a retired secretary from the Montezuma Motor Company.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maxie English Kleckley, 88, of Oglethorpe, who died August 10, 1970, in a local hospital, were held August 11, from the Mount Zion-Saint Luke Lutheran Church, Pastor George Lingle officiated and burial was in the Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Kleckley had resided in Macon County all her life and was the daughter of the late Bethia Moodye English and Mathew English. She was a member of the Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Elizabeth Cook English, 90, of Montezuma, died Saturday, April 8, 2000. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 9th in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, Oglethorpe, Ga.
Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Will Cook and Elizabeth Cook. She was a retired secretary from the Montezuma Motor Company.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma had charge of the arrangements.

Thomas English

DEATH OF THOMAS ENGLISH - In his death, which occurred early Sunday morning, Macon County lost one of its grand old men. Slowly but surely they are passing away. Mr. English died at his home in the English District after a short but severe illness.
He lived to a ripe old age. At his next birthday, he would have been 73 years old. He was one of the pioneer citizens of the county, one of five brothers, all honored and esteemed, three of whom preceded him in death. His only living brother is Judge Matthew English, who shares the general esteem in which the English family is held.
Thomas English was one of the bravest young defenders of the Lost Cause, and was a life long member of the Primitive Baptist Church, standing high in its councils. He was one of the most useful citizens of the county and was generally beloved.
He left a wife, Mrs. Eliza Virginia Higgins English and a family of eleven children, all of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood, emulating his many virtues. They are, Edwin Glover English of Macon, Arris Newton English & Wiley Thomas English and Russell English all of Englishville, William Lafayette English of Bronwood, Henry Seymour English and Quinton Curtis English of Irzigon, Oregon, Albert English of Oglethorpe, Mrs. S. A.[Rosetta Virginia English] Royal of Ellaville, Mrs. H. J. Dyess and Miss Mamie English of Englishville.
The funeral occurred at the English Cemetery, near the old home of the deceased. He had requested that the pallbearers be his old soldier comrades and the following laid him away to his last sweet sleep: J. S. Elmore, J. B. Murray, J. L. Kitchens, W. W. Childers, W. W. Dykes and J. W. Pritchard.

DEATH OF YOUNG LADY - Miss Ola English, youngest daughter of Rev. and Mrs. S. J. English of the English District of this county, died Wednesday, after an illness of two weeks. She was just budding into womanhood and was one of the most popular young ladies of the county. She was the friend and correspondent of The Citizen: we grieve with her loved ones in her death. About two weeks ago, she was stricken with gastric fever and all that medical skill and loving hands could do, availed nothing. She passed away Wednesday and all who knew her are bowed down with grief. Her remains were brought to Oglethorpe Thursday and at 4:00 o'clock were laid to rest in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.

DEATH OF HENRY ENGLISH - Death robbed the home and loved ones of a faithful and devoted son and brother, and the state and county of one of its best young citizens, when the spirit of Henry S. English winged its flight at his old home near Englishville, early Sunday morning. He had passed through a long period of suffering and on doubt, was entirely ready and willing to go.
His death marks the passing of one of the most robust young men who ever went out from Macon County into the busy world. He was a picture of health and went west to win fame and fortune, and was going up rapidly, being one of the most prominent officers of a large irrigation corporation in Oregon, when he contracted the dread disease. Realizing that his strength was slowly but surely ebbing away, he came back to the old home a year ago and at last sank, weary and suffering, into the sheltering arms of his Maker. He was a son of the late lamented Thomas H. English and and his wife, Eliza Virginia [Higgins] English and was unmarried. He left a mother and several brothers and sisters, and a large circle of friends. His remains were interred Sunday afternoon in the old family cemetery near his home.

Corrections to Sampson Samuel English's

The Dec 18 posting of Sampson Samuel English's Obituary contained notes from "Macon County Life" on Sampson's family members. Some of these facts differ from information I have seen elsewhere. The differences are given below. Would appreciate others reviewing their data and commenting so we can clarify any differences.

1). Sampson's wife's middle name is given as "Julia". The city of Americus' cemetery record shows it to have been "Laura".

2). His wife was noted to have been born May 19, 1870 in Macon Co.,GA. My notes have Jan 19, 1869 in Dawson, Terrell Co.,GA.

3). Jessie English's death date given as 1940. Americus' cemetery records have Jesse English Bell death/burial to have been Jan 6, 1999. Also, Americus cemetery records have Jesse buried next to her husband, Joseph C. Bell.

4). Mary Allie English (b.1904) middle name is Alice in my notes.

Please comment so we can resolve these slight differences in our ENGLISH history.

A GOOD MAN GONE - Mr. Mathew English died at his home in Englishville on Thursday, May 22nd, and was buried on Friday, May 23rd, in the English Cemetery.
He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and a conscientious Christian gentleman.
He was 83 years of age, and had served Macon County as a commissioner for thirty-two years, and during all these years was never absent from a single meeting.
He was an honest straight-forward citizen, a good neighbor and a devoted husband and father.
In his death, the county has lost one of its best and most influential citizens.

FINAL RITES HELD FOR MISS ENGLISH - Funeral services for Miss Bethia English, 60, who died Sunday, were held at 11 o'clock am Monday from the Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. John Zeigler and the Elder George Riley Hunt officiated and burial was in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY.
Pallbearers were A. J. Allman, Glenn Chase, Glenn Lee Chase, Elsa Woodall, Olin Smith and Merlan Williams.
Miss English was a lifelong resident of Macon County and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.

Last Rites for Mr. A. N. English Thursday.
Citizens of Oglethorpe and this entire section paid final tribute to Mr. A. N. English, who died at his residence seven miles out from Oglethorpe at four o'clock Wednesday P.M. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at Mt. Zion Church conducted by Rev. D. L. Heglar and was attended by friends and acquaintances from all sections. Mr. English was 66 years of age, and had long been recognized as one of this community's leading citizens, being one of it's largest planters and also one of it's best business men, he having served as President of the Bank of Oglethorpe, County Tax Assessor, and in many other capacities. The end, while not entirely unexpected, came suddenly, as it was thought that his condition was unchanged from what it had been for several weeks, and it was while a young lady friend, who had dropped in to see him, was playing and singing for him , at his request, the song "Lord I'm Coming Home" that he peacefully dropped out, and this song was again rendered by a mixed quartette at the grave services.
In addition to the grief stricken widow, who before her marriage was, Miss Lydia Kleckley, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Willie Ruth English; one sister, Mrs. Etta Royals of Ellaville and three brothers, Mr. W. L. English of Ellaville and Mr. Russell English and Mr. Eiley English, both of this county.

MRS. BUTLER TELLS OF FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
Oglethorpe, Ga. - March 1 - Two weeks ago the body of Mrs. R. L. English was brought here from Homestead, Fla., where she lost her life in an automobile accident.
A harsh rattling noise under the right front of the car following brief difficulty in keeping the car on the concrete portion of the roadway was the only warning given of the automobile upset Saturday afternoon which claimed the life of Mrs. R. L. English , a visitor of a week from Oglethorpe, Ga. and and injured the three other occupants of the car. Mrs. C. E. Butler who was driving, said yesterday.

Mrs. English, a sister-in-law of Mrs. Butler and J. W. English of Homestead, never regained copnsciousness. She suffered several broken ribs and a punctured lung.
The body of Mrs. English was shipped to Oglethorpe, Ga. Saturday night by Turner Funeral Home. It was accompanied by J.W.English.

DROWNED CHILD'S BODY IS LOCATED
Forsyth, Ga. - Nov. 7 - A message was received last night by Mr. and Mrs. J. T. English from the coroner at St. Simons that the skeleton of a small child, believed to be Lawton, the younger of the two English boys lost the latter part of July, had been found on an island about 10 miles below St. Simons.
The two little English boys, James 10, and Lawton, 8, playing on the beach, were drowned late in July and though desperate search was made, neither of the bodies was recovered. A missing tooth and the general form of the small skeleton found on Sunday leaves little doubt that this was Lawton. W. M. Tribble left at once with J. T. English, father of the child, for St. Simons to make further identification.

Trustin Phillips and Marinda Phillips joined Union Church Macon Co., Ga. December 3, 1855 and was baptized by Elder Sampson English.

DEATH OF ELDER AND MRS. S. J. ENGLISH
Dear Citizen: Will you please allow me space in your valuable paper for a few words concerning the Old Soldiers of the Gospel this late day. They have been dead for some time, but are still fresh in our memory. They are dead and gone, but they still live in the hearts of all lovers of Gospel Truth. While we miss their company and council, we enjoy the thought and hope that they are at rest with Christ. The wife was faithful and true to her convictions, was a good wife, mother and neighbor.
Elder S. J. English, no doubt a called preacher, whose calling was of God, and in his service of the churches as a preacher he had no superior. Some might ask, why not say something of the bad things of life. If we undertake that, we would have to expose mankind generally, and the world could not contain the books that could be written of man's vileness.

He began preaching quite young. He died in his 62nd year, and his wife passed away in her 67th year.

MRS. R. S. ENGLISH
A most horrible tragedy occurred in our town Saturday afternoon, when the clothing of Mrs. R. S. English caught fire from an open grate and before help could reach her, she was so burned about the lower part of her body that she lived only about twenty-four hours.
Everything was done for her that could be done but medical skill availed nothing, and the end came peaceably about two o'clock Sunday afternoon.
She is survived by her Husband, Mr. R. S. English, one daughter, Mrs. George Moss of Persia, Iowa; and five sons, Matchet English of Quitman; Wallace English of Macon; Paul English of Ideal; John English or Cordele; and Robert English of Chipley, Fla. to whom the entire community extends their sympathy in this great bereavement.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. F. Jelks and interment was in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.

Dawson - Jan. 21, - Mrs. A. W. English, 85, died at her home in Dawson, Ga. today after a long illness.
She was born in Worth County, Jan. 1, 1855, the daughter of James Frederick Daniel and Janie Shiver Daniel.
She was married Jan. 10, 1880, to Allen W. English of Macon County. They moved to Dawson in 1910. She was a Baptist.
Survivors are, daughters: Mrs. Iva Muriel Lewis, Mrs. Janie Lewis of Dawson; Mrs. W. S. Wright of Ocala, Fla; Mrs. Mary McLendon of Scranton, Pa.; Mrs. Bettie Wager of Atlanta; two sons, William Ffranklin English and Daniel Frederick English of Dawson; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at the home, Monday, 10 o'clock. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Dawson.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. DAISY ELMORE ENGLISH HELD MONDAY.
Funeral services were held from the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Oglethorpe, Monday morning, December 30, at 11 o'clock for Mrs. Daisy Elmore English of Quitman, who died at a hospital there Saturday afternoon.
Born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Rev. J. S. Elmore and Isabelle M. Ganann, both natives of this county, Mrs. English spent a great many years here, moving to Quitman thirty-four years ago. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Oglethorpe, Quitman Chapter U.D.C. and Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to William M. English who survives her.
Other survivors include: one son, George E. English of Marietta; two sisters, Mrs. T. C. Powers and Mrs. C. T. Harden, both of Oglethorpe; one brother, E. E. Elmore of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
The Rev. John D. Zeigler conducted the services, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Kaiser of Quitman and the Rev. D. L. Haigler of Brunswick.
Burial was in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.

Born January 31. 1874 in Macon County, the daughter of the late John L. and Carolyn Daniel Kleckley, Mrs. English was seventy-four years of age. She was the wife of the late Mack English.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Richard Forrester of Raleigh, N. C., Mrs. Henry Johnson and Mrs. Charles Everett, both of Oglethorpe; one son, Henry B. English of Oglethorpe; and three grandchildren.

Found in: Personal Mention Column - Mrs. Amelia [Permelia] English, wife of Joel W. English, died Saturday at her home at Andersonville, after a lingering illness. She was a good woman, esteemed and loved by all. She was a devoted wife and mother, and for thirty years a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist Church. She left a husband and five children, all grown to manhood and womanhood, to each of whom the sympathy of a host of friends goes out.
The funeral occurred Sunday at Andersonville in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.

MRS. VASHTI ENGLISH - Mrs. Vashti English, widow of Robert H. English, died at her home in the English settlement Wednesday. Mrs. English was ninety years old and probably the oldest resident of Macon County.

Joel Edge

MURDER IN AMERICUS - Mr. Joe K. English went to Americus last Friday to see what was being done in regard to the murder the previous day of his cousin, Mr. Joel Edge, one of the best known citizens of Sumter County.
The death of Mr. Edge was shocking and mysterious. The body of Mr. Edge was found on the side of the road near his home, about five miles from Americus, with the skull crushed. From the evidence at hand, it would seem Mr. Edge was murdered while in Americus late Wednesday night and the body then placed in the dead man's buggy, his horse put in the road to his late home, and started off.
The body remained in the buggy until almost at home, when it fell out where found by neighbors the next morning.
The case is apparently still shrouded in mystery. The dead man was unmarried, though he had many relatives and friends in Oglethorpe and Macon County, and prominent in secret order circles in this section.
A negro woman has been arrested, charged with the crime.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. SAM JOE ENGLISH - Funeral services for Mrs. Sam J. English, 40, who died at her residence, a few miles out from Oglethorpe, early Sunday morning, February 3rd, were held at Red Hill Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. M. Woodward of Hawkinsville, who had been Mrs. Englishs' pastor. Mrs. English, was reared in the community in which she died, had always been a resident of Macon County, although she had been ill for the past few months, her death came as a shock to her relatives and hundreds of friends, as it was not known that her condition for the past few days, was any more critical than it had been for some little time.
Mrs. English, who before her marriage, was Miss Mittie Smith, numbered her friends by her acquaintances, always took a leading part in all work for the betterment of her community and her death has cast a gloom over the entire section of the county in which she had resided from childhood.
Surviving , in addition to her husband and twelve children, are her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Smith; one brother, Mr. J. S. Smith; three sisters, Mrs. Lester Johnson, Mrs. Morgan Williams and Miss Lois Smith, all of Macon County, with the exception of Miss Lois Smith, who resides at Plant City, Fla.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Moss, Monday.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Moss, 50, who died suddenly at her residence at Havana, Florida, Saturday night, were held a t the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY here at eleven o'clock Monday morning, conducted by Rev. J. A. Summer, who was assisted by Rev. D. L. Heglar. Mrs. Moss, before her marriage was Miss Alma English. She was born and reared in this community, while up until a short time ago she resided at Persia, Iowa, to which point she moved with her husband immediately after her marriage some twelve or fifteen years ago, and had only been back in the South a very few months. Mrs. Moss was a quiet unassuming woman, with a sweet disposition and in addition to hundreds of friends, has a number of relatives in this section, many of whom were present at the funeral services.
She is survived by her husband, who at present, resides at Havana, her father, Mr. R. S. English, of the same city and five brothers, Mr. W. M. English of Quitman; Mr. W. J. English of Macon; Mr. J. E. English of Cordele, Mrs. P. H. S. English of Waycross and Mr. Robert English, Jr. of Havana.

Mrs. J. S. [Isabel Ganann] Elmore

It is with great sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. J. S. Elmore, who died early Sunday morning at the Plains Sanitarium. She had a fall a short time ago and while painful, was not thought at the time to be at all serious, but complications set in and she was carried to the Hospital at Plains Friday morning where everything that was possible was done for her, but to no avail.
She was before marriage to Rev. J. S. Elmore, on Dec. 21st 1876, Miss Isabella M. Gnann of Effingham County, where she was born on June 2nd, 1848. She went to Senoia as a bride, where her husband was then pastor of the Lutheran Church. Soon after they moved to this section of the country, where he served several of the churches and was also Ordinary of our county for a number of years, til his death on January 12th,1911.
Mrs. Elmore leaves four daughters as follows: Miss Fannie Elmore, Mrs. Matchett English of Quitman; Mrs. Mary Bell Powers and Mrs. C. T. Harden and two sons, Messrs E. E. Elmore of Atlanta and C. D. Elmore of Augusta and a host of friends to mourn her loss.
She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Oglethorpe Cemetery, Monday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives. Rev. Chas a. Phillips, pastor of the Lutheran Church conducted the services.

Mrs. Genevieve Underwood

January 9, 1925 - DEATH OF MRS. UNDERWOOD
Late Monday afternoon Mrs. Genevieve Underwood passed from this world of suffering into the Great Beyond. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. W. Webb, a few miles out of town. She has been in bad health for several years and her advanced age added to her disease causing medical skill to be of no avail.
She is survived by four daughters; Mrs. B. W. Webb, Mrs. E. Atwater, Mrs. Rich English and Mrs. Mask of Pelham and two sons, Messrs Simeon Underwood and Mills Underwood of Pelham, besides numerous grandchildren. She was laid to rest in Red Hill Cemetery Tuesday afternoon in the presence of many sorrowing relatives and friends.

Ft. Valley - Services for Art E. Ellis, 70, who died Wednesday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Fort Valley, were held at 3 pm Friday in the OGLETHORPE CEMETERY in Oglethorpe.
Mr. Ellis, a native of Schley County, was a retired automobile dealer and a member of the Fort Valley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Inez W. Ellis of Fort Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Williams of Warner Robins, and Mrs. Sarah Lawhorn of Perry; two sisters, Mrs. Clay Williams of Oglethorpe and Mrs. Annie Larkin of Columbus; a brother, Robert Ellis of Oglethorpe; and seven grandchildren.
Rooks Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
