DEATH OF MRS. BETHIA ENGLISH [By Mrs. Mary Belle Powers] Oglethorpe, Ga. May 11,
Just as twilight deepened into darkness Friday evening, May 5th, the brittle
cord which bound the soul of Mrs. Bethia English to earth was snapped asunder,
and the golden chain which linked congenial minds and kindred spirits was
severed. Though she had been in enfeebled health for sometime, the message,
"Grandmother English is dead", affected us differently than the report that she
was ill and gradually sinking to the tomb. But the transition from life to death
was so peaceful that those who watched at her bedside realized that it was a
blessed exchange from earth to heaven. she has been freed from the cares, toils
and anxieties of life, and in their stead, gained peace, rest and joy
unspeakable. She passed away in a good old age, being in ther 86th year, like a
shock of grain, fully ripe for the harvest, she has been gathered home to enjoy
"The rest that remaineth for the poeple of God."
Mrs. English, who before her marriage was Miss Bethia Moodye was a pioneer
citizen of Oglethorpe and from her wonderful memory and her beautiful flow of
language one gained much valuable information, and never tired listening to her
tell of the palmy as well as the disastrous days of old Oglethorpe. Indeed, this
long, useful, remarkable, life has had an eminent part in the making of Macon
County, the county she loved so well. She will be missed, but the afterglow of
such a life is always bright.
She was a faithful member of Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church and loved to
attend the services of her church, but was liberal and unbiased toward other
churches.
In 1875 she married Mr. Matthew English, who preceded her to the grave several
years ago. She leaves one step-son, Mr. R. B. English of Americus, three sons,
M. H. English, J. R. English and S. J. English, all of Oglethorpe, one
step-daughter, Mrs. Bettie Kleckley of Oglethorpe, one daughter, Mrs. Dan
Kleckley with whom she made her home, a number of grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
She was laid to rest Saturday P.M. in the Oglethorpe Cemetery in the presence of
a large number of relatives and friends. Many beautiful floral offerings attest
the love and esteem in which she was held. In the absence of her pastor, the
funeral obsequies were conducted by Rev. D. L. Hedlar, pastor of the Lutheran
Church.

Church Memorial
In Memory of Sister Vashti English
According to the will and purpose of our Heavenly Father, for reasons well
pleasing to Himself, He has again visited us by the summons of death in taking
one of His blessed children (in the person of Sister Vashti English) home to
Himself, saying, "Child, thy Father calls, come home," She united with the
Primitive Baptist Church at Bluff Springs, Macon County, Ga., July 11, 1886, and
departed this life April 17, 1919, in the ripe old age of ninty-three years,
falling as it were a shock of corn fully ripe for the Master's garner. She
exemplified by her Christian deportment, daily walk and godly conversation all
those Christian graces that so beautifully characterizes an humble and loving
child of grace. In her last sickness we feel sure she was blest with the loving
and peaceful presence of her Saviour, in that her body void of pain and was
permitted to pass over the river without a groan or strugle. In our Christian
assembly her seat is vacant, and, as often as we meet to engaage in thanksgiving
and supplication, we shall miss her, but we sorrow not as those who mourn
without hope, for we feel sure that her spirit is basking in the sunshine of
God's everlasting love, there awating the redemption of the body in the
resurection, when the soul and body will be reunited, thoroughly prepaired to
engage in chiming anthems of praise to the Lord of lords and King of Kings for
ever and ever Amen

A SAD ACCIDENT
On last Friday, June 10th, about 9 am, the neighborhood of Englishville, in this

The Semi-Weekly Citizen - Oglethorpe, Ga. Jan. 12, 1901
Found in "TOWN TOPICS" - Mr. and Mrs. Mack English, Jr., who reside near
Englishville, lost their little son, Luther, Wednesday, in a shocking manner.
They were at the home of Mr. George Dyess, spending the day, and their children,
little Luther among them, slipped away with the other children to play in the
cotton seed house. Luther dug a deep hole in the seed, and hid in it from his
companions. Suddenly the seed caved in on all sides from above, burying the
little fellow several feet underneath. He was unable to extricate himself, and
when the children gave the alarm and brought help-, he had lost consciousness.
He was quickly pulled out, and in a few minutes expired.
His parents are heart broken and the whole community shares with them their
grief. Luther was a bright little fellow, the idol of his parents, and there
were many bitter tears when his body was laid away in its last resting place.

Brother John Spurlin
SOUTHERN BAPTIST MESSENGER, Covington, Newton Co., Ga.
Vol. 6 No. 22 November 15, 1856
Macon Co., Ga. November, 1856.
Brother Beebe I send you for publication the obituary of Brother John Spurlin
who departed this life October 6, 1856, in the 74th year of his age. Brother
Spurlin was born October 4, 1783, in North Carolina. His parents removed to
Warren Co., Ga. when he was small, where he was raised. He married December 17,
1800 to Mary Newbury. He joined the Baptist Church at Elam in Jones Co., Ga.
about 1820, and was baptized by Elder Henry Hooten. In 1832 he was ordained
Deacon of Providence Church in Houston County. He then removed to Macon County
and joined Ebenezer Church, where he spent the remainder of his days. But, alas!
he is no more. His happy spirit has gone to that spirit world, where pleasures
never end, and sorrows never come - where he wears the righteous robe wrought by
Christ, that will never fade. Brother Spurlin was well known as a Baptist and as
a Deacon. (May the good Lord fill his seat and station with another like
precious member.) He was afflicted for some considerable time before he died,
and he was often heard to say he wanted to leave some dying testimony of his
acceptance with God. A short time before he died, he became so weak that he was
not able to move his limbs about by himself, and while his friends were moving
them, he said the God that spoke him into existence, could say be whole and it
would be so, but not my will but thine be done , he then commenced to phrase his
Lord, and I have been told by the bystanders that they never heard an abler
prayer fall from the lips of man for the length of time - as he wound up , he
said he had been a long time desiring to talk as he had then done. He died in a
few minutes, and appeared to die in a full triumph of Faith. May we say like old
Job, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away and
blessed be the name of the Lord." He has left a widow and eleven children and
numerous friends to mourn his loss. Their loss is his eternal gain. Brother
Spurlin was married nearly 56 years - has raised eleven children of his own and
two orphans, and never had a corpse in his house until he died.
