FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. UNDERWOOD - Funeral services for Mrs. R. I. Underwood,
75, one of Oglethorpe's most beloved and highly respected citizens, were held
from the Methodist Church of which she was a member, Monday, conducted by Rev.
J. J. Sanders.
Mrs. Underwood had been ill for sometime, having sustained injuries in a fall
sometime ago, from which she never recovered, on account of her age and physical
condition. She was a woman who endeared herself to all by her sweet disposition
and many good traits of character.
Interment was in the Oglethorpe Cemetery.

MRS. W. J. UNDERWOOD
Montezuma, Feb. 28. Funeral services for Mrs. W. J.
Underwood whose death occurred at her home in Garden Valley Friday, were
conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon. The interment was at the family
burial grounds. She is survived by two sons, J. H. Underwood and Milton
Underwood, and two daughters, Mrs. J. O. L. Jolly and Miss Callie Underwood, all
of this county.
Mrs. William A. Underwood was the former Elizabeth"Lizzie"
Hill, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Brewer Hill. She was b. August 1851 in
Georgia.
The father of Elizabeth Underwood was the g-g-grandfather on my
maternal HILL line in Macon Co GA. THOMAS HILL-SARAH BREWER HILL were the grand
parents of my g-grandmother CLYDE HILL, sometimes shown as CLIDE HILL, she was
the dau. of GILBERT& MARY HILL. CLYDE HILL's line goes back to a NC
SLAUGHTER HILL line. This can get confusing because she married a ROBERT LEE
HILL who was the grandson of the SLAUGHTER HILL in Macon Co I've wriiten to you
about. Robert was the brother of YANCEY HILL who started the HILL Weekend store
in Montezuma. I'm interested if there is an obit on her grandmother MARGARETT
BREWER who was last shown on the 1860 Fed Census living with THOMAS HILL.

Sister Martha Underwood
SOUTHERN BAPTIST MESSENGER, Covington, Newton Co., Ga.
Vol. 7 No. 11 June 1, 1857
Macon Co., Ga. May 27, 1857.
Brother Bebee by request I send you the obituary of Sister Martha Underwood, who
departed this life on the 26th inst., in the seventy first year of her age.
Sister Underwood was married to Brother William Underwood in 1808; joined the
Baptist Church in 1824, where she lived orderly, upright and pious until her
death.
The writer has been personally acquainted with her for about ten years and a
member in the church with her for the last eleven months, and present with her
when she died, and there is not a doubt on his mind but her soul has gone to God
who gave it to praise Him forever and ever. As a wife she was affectionate, as a
mother kind, as a neighbor obliging and as a member of the church she was prompt
to fill her seat and station. But alas! she is no more, her happy spirit has
taken its flight to that haven of eternal rest, where joys never end and sorrows
never come, while her body lies moldering in the dust, to wait the day of the
resurrection, when it shall be raised and fashioned like the body of our blessed
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She has left a husband and children, grandchildren and great grand children, and
numerous friends to mourn her loss, but their loss is her eternal gain; may the
God of love prepare them to meet her in the climes of eternal glory. Her funeral
was preached (before burying) by Elder William Hubbard, from John 14:1-2
