DR. JOEL PRESTON WALKER
Dr. J. P. Walker, Beloved Citizen, Buried Saturday.
This community lost a link with the past Friday morning, January 31, in the
passing of Dr. Joel Preston Walker, who came to Montezuma 70 years ago and was,
at the age of 95, the oldest living member of the Georgia Pharmacists
Association. He was a past president of the G. P. A.
A former mayor ot the city, a city councilman for 21 years, Dr. Walker's
memory of the region's earlier days was unsurpassed.
Courtly in manner, literate, witty, and interested to the last in everything
from politics to basketball, he was a raconteur without parallel. No one else
had the clear recollection of re-construction days, had heard Alexander Hamilton
Stephens and Gen. John B. Gordon speak, and had seen Jefferson Davis. And no one
else, at the age of 85, had gone along by air to England and France, brushing up
on his French in order to get the most out of his journey.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Montezuma Methodist
Church where he was a member. Burial was in FELTON CEMETERY. Pallbearers - Not
copied.
Surviving are two sons, Tom Walker and Edgar Walker, who continue to operate
the family drug company and a daughter, Miss Estelle Walker, a musician and
teacher of piano; one brother, Charlie Walker of Perry and a number of nieces
and nephews. Dr. Walker was a native of Houston County.
