Gaissert Family of Morgan County

Submitted by A. J. Gaissert

Ludwig F. Gaissert came to America from Germany. He first settled in Green county and then Morgan County. He met and married Mary Ann Martin, eldest child of John Wesley Martin and Elizabeth Crew/Crews/Cruses Martin. Ludwig and Mary Ann owned a farm on Brownwood Road in the Brownwood Community. Their family cemetery is across the road from the former farm and is now located behind a private residence.

Ludwig and Mary Ann Martin had eight children, only four survived into maturity. Their adult children were: George Martin Gaissert, Jefferson Harmon Gaissert, Walter W. Gaissert, and Robert Lee Gaissert (my grandfather - he married Alice Diamond Adams of the Godfrey Community). Children who died in infancy or before adulthood were: Louisa, Mary Frances, Oscar, and an unnamed infant.

Ludwig and Mary Ann Martin Gaissert lived in Morgan County from around 1850 until they died in 1898 & 1899. The Martins were there long before that.

Mary Ann Martin Gaissert's father and mother were John Wesley Martin and Elizabeth Crew/Crews/Cruise of Morgan County (the Martin District named for this family). John and Elizabeth are buried in the Madison Cemetery with several of their children and relatives.
