ORIGINAL MUSTER ROLLS
of Panola Guards and Madison Home Guards, Companies Distinguished for Gallant Service in the Confederate Army.

Mr. Editor: I have the original list of names of the first two companies who left Morgan county for the war. The first was the "Home Guards," who left under Capt. J. S. Reid on the 26th of April, 1861, and belonged to the Third Georgia Regiment.

The next was the "Panola Guards," who left under Capt. G. B. Knight on 29th of July, 1861 and became a part of "Cobbs Legion."

Thinking the many friends of the two companies would like to have a list to preserve, I send it to you for publication.

We had two other full companies to leave the county -- one under Capt. Thomas P. Peacock on the 31st of October, 1861. They went in defense of the State and were stationed at Savannah.

The Other was under Capt. John Harris, and was the "Braswell Infantry," and belonged to the 44th Georgia Regiment. It was later during the war, and I don't remember the date of their departure.

The Daughters of the Confederacy would be under obligations to any of the surviving members of either of the two last companies for a list of their company. E. J. P.

STORY OF THE DEPARTURE

This Company left on the down train on Monday last, for Richmond, Va. We doubt whether a Company composed of better material has left Georgia, since the war began.

They took with them, as drummer, Lucious J. Harris, a lad only fourteen years of age, son of Corporal Hiram D. Harris. Though young to have to endure the hardships of military life, yet he has the spirit to bear him up; and, should occasion offer, will, we doubt not, rival the heroism of the little drummer of the first Regiment.

An immense concourse of citizens was present, at the depot, to witness their departure. The occasion was one of deep, and yet most melancholy, interest. Of those strong and stalwart men, how many will ever return? How many will fall by "the pestilence that walketh in darkness and for the destruction that wasteth at noonday?" and how many will pour out their heart's blood upon the battle field in defense of the rights and liberties of the South? Such thoughts were present in every heart, as was plainly evidenced by the uncontrolled sobs of many and the tearful eyes of all.

May God protect their lives, purify their hearts, preserve from disease, and shield them in the day of battle.

The following is the muster roll of the company.
